Jordan Burroughs and David Taylor won gold, Zain Retherford won silver, and three other Americans reached the gold medal finals.

Senior World Championships Match Notes - Day 7

It's a monster day for the U.S. men's freestyle team. Thomas Gilman (57 kg), Kyle Dake (74 kg), and J'den Cox (92 kg) are in the semifinals while Zain Retherford (70 kg), Jordan Burroughs (79 kg), and David Taylor wrestle for gold. The action begins at 10:45 a.m. Eastern.

SEMIFINALS (57 kg): Thomas Gilman (USA) over Wanhao Zou (CHN), 8-2

First period: Gilman picks up a takedown and an activity clock violation with 1:06 remaining for a 3-0 lead. Gilman uses a relentless pace and forces a step-out for a 4-0 lead. Zou picks up a step-out point with eight seconds remaining and Gilman takes a 4-1 lead into the break.

Second period: Gilman scores on a body lock with under two minutes remaining for a 6-1 lead. Gilman forces the pace and scores a second takedown of the period for an 8-1 lead with around a minute to go. Zou gets in on a single and scores a step-out but Gilman wins, 8-2, and will wrestle in his third World Championship final. 

SEMIFINALS (74 kg): Kyle Dake (USA) over Yones Emamichoghaei (IRI), 2-2

First period: Emamichoghaei picks up the first point on an activity clock violation for a 1-0 lead with a minute remaining. Emamichoghaei snags another point on a step-out a few seconds later for a 2-0 lead into the break. 

Second period: Dake to a single, elevates and scores four out of bounds but Iran challenges the call. The challenge is won so Dake leads 2-2 after being awarded a caution and two. Dake holds on to win 2-2 on criteria after Emamichoghaei furiously attempts to get a takedown. He will wrestle for his fourth World title tomorrow.

SEMIFINALS (92 kg): J'den Cox (USA) over Osman Nurmagomedov (AZE), 7-0

First period: Cox scores first with an activity clock violation with 55 seconds remaining and takes a 1-0 lead into the break.

Second period: Cox scores on a single 15 seconds into the period for a 3-0 lead. Cox scores on a double to extend his lead to 5-0 with 1:58 remaining. Cox picks up two on an exposure off of a chin whip late in the match for a 7-0 win and a spot in his third World final.

GOLD MEDAL FINALS (70 kg): Taishi Narikuni (JPN) over Zain Retherford (USA), 10-0

First period: Retherford is in on a high crotch but Narikuni counters and after several seconds Narikuni gets the takedown and laces Retherford four straight times for a 10-0 technical superiority win. Retherford wins silver.

GOLD MEDAL FINALS (79 kg): Jordan Burroughs (USA) over Mohammad Nokhodilarimi (IRI), 4-2

First period: Nokhodilarimi scores first on an activity clock violation to take a 1-0 lead with 41 seconds remaining in the period. He takes a 1-0 lead into the break.

Second period: Burroughs picks up his first point to take a 1-1 criteria lead on a step-out in the first 10 seconds. Burroughs scores on a blast double a few seconds later for a 3-1 lead. Burroughs gets an additional point on an activity clock violation for a 4-1 lead with 43 seconds remaining. Burroughs gives up a late step-out point but holds on and grabs his seventh World/Olympic title with a 4-2 win.

GOLD MEDAL FINALS (86 kg): David Taylor (USA) over Hassan Yazdani Charati (IRI), 7-1

First period: Yazdani scores first with an activity clock violation with 1:04 remaining in the period. Taylor scores a single-leg takedown with 30 seconds remaining to take a 2-1 lead into the break.

Second period: Taylor scores a second takedown near the edge to take a 4-1 lead with 1:40 remaining. Taylor picks up another on a step-out for a 5-1 lead. Taylor stays poised and counters with a takedown near the edge for a 7-1 lead. Taylor attempts to score on a front headlock in the closing seconds but Taylor wins 7-1, picking up his third World/Olympic title.
