10 Top Ten Upsets In Past Week Of NCAA Wrestling

There were 31 total upsets and 10 top ten upsets in the past week of NCAA wrestling. Take a look below at a full list of the biggest upsets and breakdowns of the most notable matches.

Gomez Climbing At 149

Austin Gomez continues to make the most of his comeback season for the Wisconsin Badgers. On Friday night, Gomez upset returning All-American #4 Yahya Thomas in a thrilling, 8-6 decision. In the match, Thomas took a 4-3 decision into the third period before Gomez tied it up at 4 with an escape just ten seconds into the final period. Gomez then hit a beautiful reattack double for a takedown to take a 6-4 lead with 1:30 to go in the match. He would capitalize on another errant shot by Thomas to ice the match with just under a minute left in the match. Gomez’s upcoming schedule will truly tell us how high he can climb at 149 with potential matches against #5 Ridge Lovett, #10 Max Murin, and #1 Yianni Diakomihalis.

Another Big Win For Ed Scott

Last month at the collegiate duals Ed Scott took out #17 Jarrett Jacques and #10 Kaleb Young in successive matches. On Sunday, Scott got another upset win over #6 Qunicy Monday in NC State’s dual against Princeton. In their match, Monday got an early takedown and held a 3-1 lead in the second before Scott secured a late takedown to tie the match at 3 going into the third. In the final period, Scott scored an escape and takedown to build a 6-3 lead with just over a minute left in the match. Monday was able to escape but failed to score the match-tying takedown resulting in Scott taking home the 6-4 win. Scott will likely make a big jump in the rankings this week and is proving to be a dangerous threat to anyone in the country at 157 pounds.

Matthews Stuns Micic

Cole Matthews secured the biggest win of his collegiate career on Sunday with his 11-5 victory over three-time All-American #4 Stevan Micic. The turning point in the match for Matthews was able to secure four-back points during a scramble situation. Take a look at a highlight of the sequence below.

Two Big Upsets Propel Lehigh Over Cornell

At 174, Jake Logan won a controlling 6-3 decision over # Chris Foca and at 184 AJ Burkhart took out Jonathan Loew in a back and forth 7-6 bout. Take a look at both matches below.
