Lowell is seeking an eighth consecutive Michigan state team wrestling championship in Division 2 this week while Detroit Catholic Central is going for a fifth straight Division 1 crown and Dundee a fourth Division 3 title in a row.

Those programs may have built dynasties, but Davison has established itself as the state's best program this season, knocking off all three teams with ease during the past month.

The Cardinals have taken down the Shamrocks, Red Arrows and Vikings by a combined 129-32 margin.

Davison (19-0), who also shut out Division 3 state quarterfinalist Alma, is hoping that success is an indication its 15-year state championship drought will at last come to end Tuesday at Wings Event Center Kalamazoo.

Since a squad led by future NCAA champion Jon Reader (Iowa State) captured a fifth straight title and sixth in seven years in 2006, the Cardinals have fallen in the state championship match five times.

None was more heartbreaking than dropping a 29-26 decision to DCC in 2013 when the Shamrocks' Evan Toth, who later wrestled for Michigan State, pinned Davison's Derek Humphrey with 35 seconds remaining in the final match. He was trailing 9-2 and his team 26-23 at the time.

Barring an upset, Davison will likely see DCC in the finals again. The Cardinals won handily, 36-9, without one of its top performers when the teams clashed at Davison on March 13.

Top-seeded Davison drew a first-round bye and will face either Holt (24-1) or Rockford (19-3) in the semifinals.

Second-seeded DCC (19-1) has also beaten Lowell along with Holt, Rockford, other Division 1 quarterfinalists Macomb Dakota and Clarkston and Division 2 quarterfinalist Warren-Woods Tower.

The Shamrocks face Wyandotte Roosevelt (18-4) in the quarterfinals before likely meeting Hartland (22-0) in the semifinals. The Eagles take on Clarkston (16-7) in the quarterfinals.

While the final score was lopsided even with Davison missing two-time state medalist Jimmy Colley, the state's top-ranked 215-pounder, the majority of weights could have swung either way.

In fact, eight of the 14 matches were decided by three or fewer points and five by just a single point. There were was only one major decision, one technical fall and no pins.

"Exactly what we thought it would be.  Wrestling madness," DCC Athletic Director Aaron Babicz tweeted after the match. "2 great teams and very few pins. Endless ranked matchups/swing matches and Davison took more than we did."

The Cardinals and Shamrocks both boast loaded lineups featuring a combined 18 ranked wrestlers, including eight ranked No. 1, 15 state medalists (five state champions) and 17 individual regional champions. In all, the teams have five nationally-ranked wrestlers.

Here is a closer look at how a Davison-DCC rematch breaks down.

103 pounds: While the Cardinals will have a state qualifier at each weight, this is one of three the Shamrocks will not. Top-ranked regional champion Justin Gates (17-0) will likely face Micheal Cannon again. Gates beat him, 18-6, earlier this month.

112: The Shamrocks' Drew Heethius (23-0), a second-ranked regional champion who placed third in the state last season, will probably meet sixth-ranked regional champion Aden Williams (19-2) again. Williams was a state medalist in 2019.

Heethuis, also ranked No. 20 in the nation at 113, beat Williams (4-1) in the last meeting.

119: Top-ranked regional champion Caden Horwath (21-0), a state titlist last season, decisioned DCC's Clayton Jones (11-6) last time. Horwath is also ranked ninth nationally at 120 pounds while Jones was third at the regional.

They will likely meet again, but there is plenty of room for juggling for both teams between 119-140 pounds.

125: In a mild upset during the last meeting, Davison's Cam Freeman (20-3), who did not place at the state tournament last season, edged 2019 state medalist Anthony Walker, 5-4. Walker, currently ranked fourth, won a regional Saturday, upping his record to 18-2. Freeman, ranked fifth, was second in the regional. This will clearly be a weight to watch, especially if these two meet again.

130: Another swing match as Davison's Brendan Maybee (17-6), who placed third in the regional, nipped Cory Thomas 18-5) in a 5-4 squeaker last time. Thomas was a regional champion Sunday.

135: DCC has top-ranked, regional and defending state champion Dylan Gilcher (19-1), but Davison's Evan Herriman (18-1), ranked second, held his own in the last meeting before Gilcher prevailed, 10-7. Herriman was fourth in the state last season and won a regional title Saturday.

140: Another likely clash of regional champions with the Cardinals' Owen Payne (22-1) taking on Phil Burney (18-3). Payne, who did not place at last year's state tourney, defeated state medalist Burney, 9-3, last time. Payne is ranked fourth and Burney seventh.

145: Ever-improving DCC freshman Darius Marines (11-1) knocked off state medalist Kyle White (17-5), 9-2, in the last meeting. On Saturday, Marines beat third-ranked teammate Camden Trupp, who placed third in the state last season, for the 145-pound regional title. White was fourth at the regional.

152: This is another potential barn-burner weight no matter if the Shamrocks send out Marines or Trupp (17-2) against top-ranked regional champion James Johnston (21-1). He edged Trupp, 4-3, last time in a clash of state medalists. Trupp is ranked fifth.

160: Josh Barr, Davison's top-ranked defending state champion, earned the most lopsided win of the last match, beating Cameron Adams (19-4) via technical fall. Barr (20-0) won a regional title Saturday and is ranked No. 13 nationally at 152 pounds. Adams was second at the regional.

171: Last time, Davison's Alex Facundo (20-0) decisioned Manny Rojas (22-2) in a battle of nationally-ranked NCAA Division 1 recruits. Facundo, ranked third pound-for-pound and first at 170, is headed to Penn State. Rojas, ranked fourth at 182, is going to Iowa State.

Facundo also tops Michigan's rankings at 171 while Rojas is No. 1 at 189 and both won regional titles Saturday. Facundo is seeking a fourth state championship and Rojas his second.

There is a good chance DCC moves Rojas up and hopes his replacement does not gave up six points. Rojas has been bumped as high as 215 pounds this season and there is a good chance he can secure bonus points at 189.

189: Davison's Landon Kish (16-5) got past John Browning (7-2) with a 3-1 decision last time. Both are state qualifiers as Browning placed second in his regional while Kish was fourth in his.

215: The Shamrocks do not have state qualifiers at 215 or 285 while Davison has two state medalists. Last time at 215, the Cardinals' Bryce Simmons nipped Mike Ramirez, 3-2. This time, Davison will have top-ranked regional champion Jimmy Colley (14-0), who was twice placed in the top four in the state.

285: Expect top-ranked regional champion Tyler Jelinek (19-1) of Davison to take on non-state qualifier Andrew Ross again. That might seem like a mismatch on paper, but Jelinek won just 1-0 last time.

DCC also has additional state qualifiers Mason Stewart (125 pounds, 15-6), Steven Schellenberger (135, 14-3) and Tatum Bunn (140, 17-3) at its disposal.

Prediction: Expect the final score to be closer, but Davison should finally capture another state championship.

Here is a capsule look other divisions:

DIVISION 2

Defending champion: Lowell (19-3)

Other quarterfinal teams: Stevensville Lakeshore (18-0), Monroe Jefferson (12-2), Goodrich (18-0), Warren Woods Tower (13-8), Allendale (22-7), Fremont (26-2), Charlotte (18-8)

Outlook: Seven-time defending champion Lowell should face either Stevensville Lakeshore or Goodrich in the title match, but it would not be surprising to see WWT in the final either. Lowell has tested itself with eight matches against current quarterfinal teams, beating Allendale, Division 1 quarterfinalists Rockford and Macomb Dakota and Division 3 quarterfinalists Alma and Whitehall.

Lowell lost only to Davison, Detroit Catholic Central and Dundee, arguably the state's top three teams.

The Red Arrows' lineup has 10 state qualifiers, including six state medalists and five ranked wrestlers. No. 1-ranked heavyweight Keegan Nugent is 24-0 and was second in the state last season.

Also, three-time state medalist Doak Dean (21-2) is ranked third at 160 while two-time medalist Jacob Lee (18-1) is third at 171. Zeth Stejc (17-3), another two-time medalist, is fourth at 135 and medalist Will Link (21-3) is ninth at 145.

Ramsy Mutschler (21-4) was a state medalist in 2019.

Prediction: Lowell is very battle-tested and has the firepower to win an eighth consecutive state championship.

DIVISION 3

Defending champion: Dundee (17-1)

Other quarterfinal teams: Alma (21-3), Whitehall (25-1), Richmond (9-0), Montrose (11-1), Hart (26-4), Constantine (25-4), Freeland (18-3)

Outlook: Dundee will likely face Whitehall, which is back in Division 3 after competing in Division 2 last season, in the championship match.

With eight state medalists including six defending champions, The Vikings' firepower is overwhelming, leading to a 5-1 record against quarterfinal teams this season. Dundee bested Alma along with Division 1 quarterfinalist Clarkston, defending state champions Lowell (Division 2) and Clinton (Division 4) and Division 2 quarterfinalist Warren Woods Tower.

Dundee boasts four unbeaten wrestlers and eight who are state-ranked, including two No. 1s. The Vikings' roster also contains three nationally-ranked grapplers.

Stoney Buell (21-0), a three-time state champion, is ranked third in the state at 189 pounds and 14th in the nation at 160. Casey Swiderski (22-0), a two-time state champion, is ranked first in the state at 145 and fourth in the nation at 132. State champion Braeden Davis (21-0) is ranked first in the state at 112 and eighth in the country at 113.

Tyler Swiderski (21-1), a three-time state medalist and defending state champion, is No. 2 at 160 while another defending state titlist, Dominik Lomazzo (17-3), is ranked second at 171. Austin Fietz (20-2) is Dundee's other state champion and ranked fifth at 140. He is a three-time state medalist.

State medalist Kaden Chinavare (18-0) is ranked second at 119. Another state medalist, Aiden Davis (21-1), is third at 135.

Prediction: Dundee is simply too loaded not to capture a fifth straight state championship.

DIVISION 4

Defending champion: Clinton (19-1)

Other quarterfinal teams: Hudson (23-1), New Lothrop (19-1), Schoolcraft (18-6), Leslie (21-8), Whittemore-Prescott (25-0), Bark River-Harris (25-2), Ravenna (12-12).

Outlook: Clinton, which won its first team state title a year ago, arguably boasts an even deeper lineup this season. The defending champions will likely face Hudson, which will not have an easy time getting past New Lothrop, in the title match.

Clinton, which has only lost to Dundee, had little trouble with the Tigers when they met earlier this month, taking a 41-19 decision.

In all, eight Clinton wrestlers are either past state medalists, currently ranked, or both. The program also boasts the maximum 14 state qualifiers.

The squad is led by two-time state champion Logan Badge (25-1), ranked fourth at 189, while three-time state medalist Brayden Randolph (24-1) is fourth at 171. Spencer Konz (21-3), another three-time medalist, is seventh at 160.

A.J. Baxter (22-2), a two-time medalist, is ranked fifth at 152, while George Ames (24-0) is also a two-time medalist and ranked 10th at 140. State medalist Connor Busz (20-4) is eighth at 112. Nik Shadley (24-1) is ranked ninth at 125. Kent McCombs (23-2) is another two-time state medalist.

Prediction: Clinton's lineup is stacked enough to win a second straight state title although the final score in a rematch against Hudson should be closer this time.
