With a one-word announcement on his Twitter and Instagram accounts, one of the nation's top remaining Class of 2021 recruits was off the market.

"Committed," posted Dundee's Stoney Buell on Aug. 21, declaring his intention to wrestle for Purdue. Within a week, the posts had received a combined 1,030 likes.

The three-time Division 3 state champion, No. 76 on the 2021 Big Board, chose the Boilermakers over North Carolina, Michigan State, Central Michigan and Clarion. Buell, whose high school record stands at 133-10, is No. 8 in the latest 160-pound national rankings.

Next season, Buell can become just the third Michigan wrestler to win four individual and four team state championships, joining Davison's Brent Metcalf (2002-05) and Lowell's Austin Boone (2017-20).

He is one of three Michigan seniors who recently made Division 1 commitments.

Macomb Dakota's Brendan Ferretti, a two-time Division 1 state champion, is heading to Navy while Rockford's Trenton Wachter, a two-time Division 1 state medalist, will continue his career at South Dakota State.

That brings the state's Class of 2021 Division 1 commitment count to six as Buell, Ferretti and Wachter join Kalamazoo Central's Leo Galasso (Central Michigan), Warren Woods Tower's Joe Haynes (Virginia), and Davison's Alex Facundo (Penn State).

At the recent Midwest Ironman Duals, Buell needed just 54 seconds to finish off two-time Iowa State champion Hayden Taylor, the nation's 15th-ranked 160-pounder. Taylor went 52-0 last season.

Buell also knocked off two-time Missouri state champion Gavin Gross, an Air Force, commit, in just under two minutes. He also stopped Alaska state champion Vincent Cramer, an Eastern Oregon commit, with a 15-5 technical fall. Another notable technical fall victory came against Oregon state runner-up Tyler Resko (15-4).

Buell went 15-1 in the tournament.

Last season, he finished 45-3 and won his third state title in dominating fashion with an 82-second pin, a technical fall and two major decisions by a combined 27-6 margin in four state-tournament matches.

Buell also helped Dundee to a third consecutive team state championship with a 17-2 technical fall in the quarterfinals, a 39-second pin in the semifinals and an 8-0 shutout in the title match against Richmond.

Among Michigan wrestlers, he lost only to Detroit Catholic Central's Manny Rojas, No. 8 in the current 182-pound national rankings, after decisioning him in the 16U, 152-pound freestyle title match in Fargo last summer.

Buell's junior season also included a Grappler Gold Invitational title and finishing fourth at the Brecksville Holiday Tournament.

In 2017, Buell won the USA Wrestling Kids and Veterans Folkstyle National Championships, 136-pound title with a 90-second pin in the final. Less than a year later, he earned his first state championship with a 6-1 decision over Shepherd’s Trevor Robinson, who became a state champion himself the next season.

Buell’s next state title proved more difficult to earn when he faced Lake Fenton’s Sean Trombley in the 152-pound final. Trombley boasted a 50-1 record and had finished second in the state the previous two seasons.

The match soon became a defensive tussle and remained scoreless through two periods. Buell began the third period on bottom and quickly escaped to earn the only point of the match, outlasting Trombley for a 1-0 decision.

In addition to the Fargo freestyle championship, Buell's 2019 also included a sixth in freestyle and seventh in Greco at FloNationals and sixth at the UWW Cadet Nationals.

He recently committed to competing in the Grappler Fall Classic, Oct. 3-4 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. There, Buell could face Davison sophomore Josh Barr, No. 6 on the Class of 2023 Big Board, who is ranked No. 9 nationally at 160. Barr won a Division 1 state championship last season and finished undefeated (39-0).

Buell is Purdue's third commit among the 2021 Big Board's top 80, joining Cincinnati La Salle's Dustin Norris (No. 55) and Brecksville, Ohio's Ben Vanadia (No. 65).

Buell's collegiate weight will likely be 165 and freshman Emil Soehnlen, who missed the majority of the 2019-20 season due to an injury, currently fills that spot in the lineup.  Soehnlen still has four years of eligibility remaining after redshirting his first year at Purdue and receiving a medical hardship waiver last spring. He was 9-6 when an injury ended his season.

The Ohio state champion, No. 55 on the Class of 2019 Big Board, boasted a 163-29 high school mark.

Ferretti's junior season did not even begin until January thanks to a nagging foot injury, but that did not stop him from finishing 34-1 and capturing a 119-pound state championship.

He decisioned Stoney Creek's Andrew Hampton, 7-3, in the finals match. Hampton was limited to escape points. Hampton had been unbeaten against Division 1 wrestlers. In the quarterfinals, Ferretti blanked Rochester Kavan Troy, a 2019 state champion at 103 pounds, 9-0.

Ferretti announced his college decision via Twitter on Aug. 20.

It is with great humility I would like to announce I will be continuing my athletic and academic career at the United States Naval Academy. I would like to thank my number one supporters, my family. They have done so much to get me where I am today. Lastly, I would like to thank all of my coaches and teammates over the years for helping me be the wrestler I have become.

Ferretti has been scored upon only three times (offensively) in the past two seasons, going 88-1 during that time. His lone loss was at the hands of Haynes, currently ranked No. 1 in the state at 119 while Ferretti is No. 2.

At the Midwest Ironman Duals, Ferretti needed a mere 35 seconds to finish off two-time Iowa State champion Carter Fousek. He also shut out South Dakota state champion Andy Meyer (10-0).

As a sophomore, Ferretti finished with a 54-0 record and the 112-pound state championship. He was third at 103 as freshman and boasts a 140-6 high school mark. He was a Grappler Fall Classic finalist in 2017 and took fourth last year.

Ferretti's collegiate weight will likely be 125 and Navy's starter, Logan Treaster, will be a season next season.

Wachter was third in Division 1 at 140 pounds last season, finishing with a 36-5 record. He was fifth in the state as a sophomore and a state qualifier as a freshman as well. Wachter will enter his senior season with a 119-19 high school record.

At the Midwest Ironman Duals, he decisioned Nebraska state champion Darian Diaz (10-8) and Oregon state champion Daschle Lamer (6-2).

Wachter also placed fourth at the 2019 USAW Folkstyle Nationals and seventh at the 2019 GFC.

He will likely wrestle at 149 for the Jackrabbits and their probable starter, four-time Wisconsin state champion Hunter Marko, will be a senior next season.
