A raised stage tonight in the Devaney Center, atmosphere looks great for a big-time Big Ten showdown. Keep refreshing every few minutes so you can see how all the action is going down.
Brandon Meredith, Penn State vs Alex Thomsen, Nebraska
1st Period: Halfway through the first and no real attacks from either wrestler. Outside a couple halfshots, no one really committed to a shot that period and we'll end scoreless.
2nd Period: Thomsen starts underneath and is out in under five seconds to get on the board first, 1-0. High crotch from Meredith, Thomsen stuffs it and was nearly around behind for a takedown, but Meredith able to square up. Through five minutes of wrestling, no takedowns.
3rd Period: Meredith's turn underneath and he's out in under 20 seconds. This one will come down to a takedown. At the 1:26 mark, Meredith gets in deep on a high crotch, Thomsen goes crackdown and rolls Meredith through and is able to earn a stalemate. Thomsen in on a head inside single, but Meredith able to pull him up into an over-under situation and that is how regulation will end.
Sudden Victory: Thomsen shoots a straight on double, Meredith pulls him up, but Thomsen has a tight body lock and he's able to throw Meredith by to get the takedown. Thomsen wins, 3-1.
Nebraska 3, Penn State 0
#4 Roman Bravo-Young, Penn State vs #15 Ridge Lovett, Nebraska
1st Period: A minute in and Lovett really trying to control RBY with a two on one. At the 1:50 mark, Lovett with a really nice boot scoot, but RBY able to scramble out and score a takedown of his own. It looked like Lovett was going to have an escape, but he got greedy and worked for the reversal and RBY was able to tie him and earn a stalemate and stay on top. We are under review now, I believe looking to see if Lovett had an escape. No escape is given. but on the re-start Lovett is out in the first couple seconds, 2-1. Lovett walking RBY around the mat with a two one one, but he's unable to score from it as the period ends.
2nd Period: RBY going neutral. Doesn't want to go underneath Lovett. RBY with a straight on double he switched to a head inside single, now in the crackdown position as Lovett tried to sit the corner, but RBY ducks under the leg of Lovett and scores another takedown. RBY leads 4-1 now with :19 to go. RBY with a huge rideout of the remainder of the period.
3rd Period: Lovett starts on bottom and RBY now goes over a minute of riding time, but gets dinged for stalling as he was below the hips of Lovett for 5 seconds. RBY goes optional start and kicks Lovett away at the 1:26 mark. 4-2 on the scoreboard but RBY with 1:35 of riding time. Lovett walks RBY out of bounds with an over-under and that's his second stall call. Now 4-3 RBY. RBY with a snap down re-attack and locks up a cradle and gets four back points as well. Throw in riding time and the All-American gets a MASSIVE major decision, 11-3.
Penn State 4, Nebraska 3
#2 Nick Lee, Penn State vs #6 Chad Red, Nebraska
1st Period: At the 1:37 mark Nick Lee first off a beautiful high crotch and finishes quickly to strike first, 2-0. Lee putting a tough ride on red with an arm bar, head lever, and ankle hooked. Lee finishes the first period on top and with 1:30 of riding time.
2nd Period: Lee will start on bottom and was able to get to his feet, but Red could not return him and gets dinged for stalling as they go out of bounds. On the re-start Lee is out quickly and keeps his riding time at 1:04. Lee fires off a head inside single and blows through red as he cuts across to a double and extends his lead to, 5-0. Another really tough ride from Lee as he finishes on top and with 1:58 of riding time.
3rd Period: Even though he's yet to escape, Red will go bottom. Red hit for stalling again as he was unable to build up off his stomach and Lee adds another point. Now 6-0 with over 3 minutes of riding time. Lee cuts Red at the :50 mark looking to get the major. Nick Lee in on a high single at the :20 second mark and trips for the finish. Another huge late match major for Penn State as Lee wins, 9-1.
Penn State 8, Nebraska 3
Jarod Verkleeren, Penn State vs #16 Collin Purinton, Nebraska
1st Period: Shot from space from Verkleeren, Purinton counters with a shot of his, Verkleeren tries to spin out, but Purinton circles around him for the takedown and Verkleeren is able to escape right away. 2-1 less than a minute in. That's the only action of the opening period.
2nd Period: Purinton will start on bottom and is out in seven seconds to extend his lead to, 3-1. Stalemate at the :48 second mark. Verkleeren was in a front headlock but unable to score. We head to the third with a 3-1 lead for Purinton.
3rd Period: Verkleeren on bottom and is out just as quickly as Purinton was. 3-2 lead for the Cornhusker now. Beautiful low single from Purinton creates a scramble as Verkleeren tries to pass a leg and roll across his back, but Purinton traps him on his back and is able to picks up the fall! Absolutely massive for Nebraska.
Nebraska 9, Penn State 8
Bo Pipher, Penn State vs #25 Peyton Robb, Nebraska
1st Period: Robb wasting no time as he picks up a takedown in the first 10 seconds. Quickest one of the night so far. Robb riding really as well with an inside wrist and the ankle hooked. Now Robb throws a boot in as his riding time is approaching two minutes. Robb gets a little too high and Pipher able to get a late reversal and tie the match before the period ends.
2nd Period: With 2:13 of riding time, Robb will start on bottom. Robb able to get a reversal and retake the lead 4-2 as his riding time goes back up over 2 minutes. Really big for Robb to ride out the remainder of the period as well. He finishes with 2:39 of riding time.
3rd Period: Pipher on bottom, but nothing doing a little over a minute in. 3:34 of riding time for Robb now. They go out of bounds with :18 to go. Robb with 4:21 of riding time now. Pipher with an escape with :04 seconds to go, but it won't matter. Robb wins, 5-3.
Nebraska 12, Penn State 8
#1 Vincenzo Joseph, Penn State vs Isaiah White, Nebraska
1st Period: A couple early really deep doubles from Isaiah White, but Cenzo's hips are enough to stop them. At the 1 minute mark, Cenzo with a nice head inside single and he's able to beat White to the corner and score the takedown. White able to get out quickly as they got a restart after going out of bounds. We end the first period 2-1 Cenzo in the lead.
2nd Period: White to start on bottom. Cenzo able to flatten him out and gets a stall call on White as he is suffocating him on top. White unable to escape and Cenzo ends the period with 2:17 of riding time.
3rd Period: Cenzo on bottom and is out in the first 15 seconds preserving his riding time and extending his lead to 3-1. White can't get to anything on his feet and Vincenzo Joseph wins it 4-1 with riding time.
Nebraska 12, Penn State 11
#1 Mark Hall, Penn State vs #6 Mikey Labriola, Nebraksa
1st Period: Mark Hall looked to go big at the 1:45 mark and stepped in with an over-under, Hall goes foot sweep and is awarded a takedown as it looked like Labriola had his hands on the mat, but Nebraska will challenge and win. No takedown. High snatch single from Hall, Labriola passes a leg, but Hall is able to circle around behind and scores the takedown and ride out the rest of the period.
2nd Period: Hall goes underneath and picks up a reversal at the 1:40 mark to extend his lead to, 4-0. Hall straps a really tough ride on Labriola for the remainder of the period and he'll head to the third with 1:39 of riding time.
3rd Period: Labriola will go on bottom to start the third and is able to escape in the first 20 seconds, but Hall keeps his riding time at 1:20. Hall with that Pete Rose single leg and is able to finish at the 1:09 mark and his lead is now, 6-1. Hall will kick Labriola and work for a major. Now 6-2. Another Pete Rose single and he's able to come out the back door and score takedown and then works his way into a cradle and decks Labriola with 7 seconds left and tells the crowd to calm down!
Penn State 17, Nebraska 12
#10 Aaron Brooks, Penn State vs #6 Taylor Venz, Nebraska
1st Period: Brooks in on a shot right away and finishes quickly and Venz is out right away, 2-1. Now Venz in on a swing single, but incredible defense from Brooks. Nebraska is challenging looking for a takedown. No takedown is confirmed. Right off the restart Venz gets a takedown and takes a 3-2 lead. Brooks is out pretty quickly though to knot the match at 3. Brooks in on another single leg, Venz goes to a crackdown position, and was nearly able to circle around behind for the takedown as time expires. We end the period tied at 3.
2nd Period: Venz will start on bottom and out in six seconds. Venz with a body lock, but Brooks able to clear out of the position where Venz is very good at. Really nice transition wrestling from Venz. He goes head inside single, to a seatbelt and throws the boot in on the other side to score the takedown and picks up a massive ride out. Venz leads 6-3 heading into the third period.
3rd Period: Brooks will start neutral, Venz with 1:06 of riding time as well. Venz gets in on a head inside single shot and finishes to take an 8-3 lead. Brooks is able to get a reversal with :15 to go but it's too little, too late as Venz wins 9-5 with over 2 minutes of riding time.
Penn State 17, Nebraska 15
#15 Shakur Rasheed, Penn State vs #10 Eric Schultz, Nebraska
1st Period: Halfway through the first no attempts from either wrestler. Schutlz was able to get an underhook throw by and was able to get rear standing on Rasheed but ran out of room on the edge. We end the first period scoreless.
2nd Period: Schultz on bottom and out in the first five seconds to get on the board first. Shultz with a double just as time expires and he picks up a huge takedown right before the buzzer to take a, 3-0 lead into the third period.
3rd Period: Rasheed underneath and like Schultz is out in the first 10 seconds. Now 3-1 Schultz. Under a minute, Rasheed hasn't been able to get in on Schultz. That's the story of the rest of the period too. Schultz wins 3-1 and gives Nebraska the lead heading into heavyweight.
Nebraska 18, Penn State 17
#20 Seth Nevills, Penn State vs #16 Christian Lance, Nebraska
1st Period: No real action halfway through the first. No score after one.
2nd Period: Lance will start on bottom and has been to his feet multiple times, but Nevills does a great job at returning him and is now putting a tough ride on Lance. A restart with :34 to go, but it doesn't matter. Nevills with a massive rideout. Scoreless as we go to the third, but Nevills with 2 minutes of riding time.
3rd Period: Nevills is out right away and lead 1-0 on the scoreboard but still has 1:51 of riding time. Lance with a head out single, in really deep, but outstanding defense from Nevills and he's able to get his leg back down on the mat. Lance with another really nice shot, but great hips from Nevills again and he scores to put it out of reach.
FINAL - Penn State 20, Nebraska 18
