Hi friends, been a while since a blogged at ya. But I'm back, and it's live bloggin time, as the #1 Iowa Hawkeyes host the #7 Wisconsin Badgers in Iowa City.

The Hawkeyes are heavy favorites and have a marked advantage in the lifetime series, in which they own a 78-8-3 record. Wisconsin has beaten Iowa just once in the last 40 dual meets, which occurred back in January of 2007.

Regardless of the team outcome, there's plenty of individual intrigue to make this one of the premier duals of the season. Below are the potential matchups.

125: #1 Spencer Lee, Iowa or Aaron Cashman vs Michael Cullen or Eric Barnett, Wisconsin

133: #2 Austin DeSanto, Iowa vs #1 Seth Gross, Wisconsin

141: #8 Max Murin or Carter Happel, Iowa vs #10 Tristan Moran, Wisconsin

149: #3 Pat Lugo, Iowa vs #15 Cole Martin, Wisconsin

157: #3 Kaleb Young, Iowa vs Garrett Model, Wisconsin

165: #2 Alex Marinelli, Iowa vs #3 Evan Wick, Wisconsin

174: #3 Michael Kemerer, Iowa vs Jared Krattinger or Tyler Dow, Wisconsin

184: Cash Wilcke, Iowa vs Johnny Sebastian, Wisconsin

197: #4 Jacob Warner, Iowa vs Peter Christensen or Taylor Watkins, Wisconsin

285: #12 Tony Cassioppi, Iowa vs #3 Trent Hillger, Wisconsin

Everyone who weighed in is listed above, which means we are likely to get DeSanto v Gross Part I and Marinelli v Wick Part V, (assuming no one from 125 or 157 bumps up). Also, no Nelson Brands, as Cash Wicke is back in at 184 for the Hawkeyes. Wilcke is not ranked, but would be if we had not swapped him out for Brands. 

The dual will start at 125! In approximately 30 minutes! You can watch live on BTN if you are able to cable. Or if you are in Carver-Hawkeye Arena, although I hope that is obvious to you.

And our broadcast as begun! How lovely. There's b-roll of Spencer walking through the halls of CHA with his Young Guns t-shirt. And Evan Wick doing the same (sans the Young Guns tee). It's party time.

Supposedly it's quite cold in Iowa City. Snowing even. It got down to the low 60s today in Austin, so I sympathize. 

125 Pounds

Spencer Lee, Iowa vs Michael Cullen, Wisconsin

1st period: The crowd gives Spencer a raucous welcome. Arena looks to be about 2/3 full, could end up even higher by the end of the match. And away we go! Lee in on a single, thinks hi-c/fireman's for a moment before switching to a double, converts, and immediately goes to work on top. Arm bar and wrist and Spencer takes Cullen over for four nearfall. 6-0 lead early in the first for Lee. Another reinforced arm bar and Spencer gets another four count on a tilt. 10-0, still in the first. Another tilt, 14-0 just before the buzzer. Classic Lee. 

2nd period: Lee chooses down. An escape will end this match. Sit to a stand to a go behind reversal and it's a 16-0 tech fall for Lee, 14 seconds into the second. As dominant as it gets. 

Iowa 5, Wisconsin 0

133 Pounds

Austin DeSanto, Iowa vs Seth Gross, Wisconsin

1st period: We get our #1 vs #2! Gross qualified for the Olympic Team Trials last week at 57 kilograms (that's 125.4 pounds!)and has All-American Austin DeSanto this weekend.Gross in on an early shot but it's stalemated. Now it's DeSanto's shot, and he converts! 2-0 DeSanto, quickly 2-1 with Gross' escape. DeSanto on a leg again. Power half from Gross stops that one. Austin takes the period by a point.

2nd period: We start on our feet, I assume it was DeSanto's choice. DeSanto in on another shot, switches to a double and power Gross to the mat. 4-1, and the crowd is pumped. 4-2 with another escape. DeSanto has the far tricep, goes fireman, and gets it! The crowd erupts on the mat return. 13 seconds left in the period, DeSanto not letting Gross escape. DeSanto gets the ride out, he leads 6-2 going into the third. Gross chooses top (I'm assuming, that's where they're starting anyway). 

3rd period: DeSanto slow to react off the whistle, but he can afford to take his time. His priority is to avoid Gross' traps. DeSanto warned for stalling. One minute to go. Gross trying everything he can think of. Potential dangerous on Gross with 4 seconds to go. That's it, DeSanto is your new #1 ranked 133-pounder!

Iowa 8, Wisconsin 0

The Badgers really needed that one if that wanted to keep this match competitive. It's just two matches in but it's hard to see a Wisconsin win unless something truly disastrous happens to the Hawkeyes in the next eight bouts. 

141 Pounds

Max Murin or Carter Happel, Iowa vs Tristan Moran, Wisconsin

1st period: We've only seen Murin once this year, and he's got a big brace on his left shoulder. We'll see how fit he is against a very solid Moran. Lots of hand fighting in the first couple minutes. Not much in the way of committed shots. Moran digging more underhooks, Murin staying busy with snap downs. A tactical period ends 0-0.

2nd period: Moran chooses bottom. Switch attempt leads to an escape, Moran takes the one point lead very early in the second. Perfectly timed level change by Murin has his hooks deep behind Moran knees and he blast doubles right to the mat. Moran out quickly and its 2-2, but Murin gave Carver-Hawkeye something to cheer about. A low shot from Murin has Moran diving over the top. An extended scramble ensues and Murin runs out of time. We go to the third tied 2-2. 

3rd period: Murin on bottom, Moran slaps on a cradle but it's too loose, Murin shakes it off and escapes to take his first lead of the dual. No stall calls, riding time not a factor. Murin times a re-attack well and hes' got Moran in trouble again. Just a 1 danger count and it's talemated. Good far ankle defense by Moran but it chewed up a lot of clock. Now Moran in on a shot and it's Murin's time to defend. They scramble. 10 seconds to go, no stalemate coming, and Murin gets another one for the Hawkeyes! 3-2 over Moran in his first test of the season.

Iowa 11, Wisconsin 0

149 Pounds

Pat Lugo, Iowa vs Cole Martin, Wisconsin

1st period: Lugo won both meetings with Martin last season. Lugo quickly drops onto a leg and drags him back with a modified pike run, sitting Martin on his butt and covering for a quick two. Martin escapes to make it 2-1 with minimal riding time. Mostly handfighting the rest of the way in the first.

2nd period: Lugo sits and escapes to extend his lead to two. Martin had a notion for a pancake but Lugo wouldn't allow it. Lugo doesn't spend long in neutral, he's back on a leg, this time cracking it back the opposite direction for his second clean finish in as many attempts. Martin escapes to make it 5-2, just under a minute left in the period. Period ends the same way and both brands brothers emphatically motion for Lugo to keep Martin down.

3rd period: Martin ignores the Brands' pleas and escapes quickly. It's still a two-point match, Lugo up 5-2, riding time not a factor. Martin fires off a powerful shot but Lugo catches him. Head and hands in position the whole time. Another couple level changes from Martin but Lugo isn't having it. Martin gets an ankle and his best chance to score but there's only 5 seconds leeft and Lugo makes it 4 for 4! 

Iowa 14, Wisconsin 0

157 Pounds

Kaleb Young, Iowa vs Garrett Model, Wisconsin

1st period: Kaleb Young At Heart looking to bounce back from his loss to David Carr against Garrett Model U.N. Young gets a quick takedown but Model goes right into a switch (shouts to Switch SZN) and has the ref counting on Young for not coming up above the hips. Young gets dinged for the stall and a locked hands call, then Model gets the reversal. Big turn of events. Now they're going to review the locked hands. It's either 2-2 or 3-2 for Model. Locked hands is waved up but the stall warning on Young remains. Score is tied at 2-2 with Model on top. Young escapes and immediately attacks. Has a near side cradle, settled for two. Model escapes. The action is happening faster than I can type. It's 5-3, Young in the lead. Another takedown for Young makes its 7-3. A furious first period finally expires with a rideout for Young. 

2nd period: Young starts the second on bottom and works for a reversal. Not sure if that was technically a switch or not but I'm sure Nomad will try and claim it is one. Model escapes and they're back to their feet. Relatively calm second period ends with Young within striking distance of a major.

3rd period: Model escapes to cut the lead to four. Riding time not displayed but I don't think it's a factor. Could be close though. Another takedown makes it 11-5. Young cuts Mode with 45 seconds to go. Young shoots in but Model sprawls and will likely keep Young at aby. he does and it's a 6 point win after the RT point is tacked on. Model saved the team point with his defense at the end of the match, but that doesn't stop Young from getting his hand raised. Hawkeyes sweep the first five weights. 

Iowa 17, Wisconsin 0


The local Hy-Vee (a supermarket for you non-Midwestern savvy types) made a giant Dan Gable out of cheese. It is spectacular. 

We have a few minutes here at the mid-way point, feel free to grab a snack, use the facilities, stare at your precious smartphones, do whatever it is you do when you have some free time.

After the dual, BTN will be playing their new doc, Alex and Eli. I've seen it and highly recommend it. Here is a preview.

165 Pounds

Alex Marinelli, Iowa vs Evan Wick, Wisconsin

1st period: This rivalry sits at 3-1 in favor of the Bull. Marinelli won all three meetings last season, Wick sole victory coming in the 2018 NCAAs. Marinelli strikes first with a far knee pick. He can't quite connect his hands (unsurprisingly considering Wick's extremely long frame) and settles for two rather than potentially more with a cradle. Wick escapes to cut the deficit in half. An active first period ends 2-1. 

2nd period: Second frame begins in neutral, Alex wanting nothing to do with Wick's top game. Marinelli reaches with an elbow post single, it doesn't land. Wick looking for a snap, changes levels but can't find an opening. Blood stoppage with 50 seconds on the clock. Action resumes, and a quiet second period ends with no change in score.

3rd period. Wick gets another turn underneath. He escapes to tie it up, riding time not a factor. Wick ups his pace with 90 seconds left in the match. More blood time with 51 ticks left in regulation. Action resumes, Marinelli reaches, Wick defends and re-attacks, Marinelli drops to a leg again and powers Wick to his hip. Two more gives Marinellu the 4-2 lead with 15 seconds to go. A big mat return seals it, Hawks continue to roll. Emotional win for Marinelli.

Iowa 20, Wisconsin 0

174 Pounds

Michael Kemerer, Iowa vs Jared Krattinger

1st period: Kemerer comes out guns blazing and gets a quick takedown. Krattinger escapes after about 20 seconds, 2-1 Kemdawg. Krattdawg attacks but Kemerer overwhelms him on the re-attack and it's 4-1 in the first. Kemerer slaps in a near-side cradle and rocks Krattiger back. The cradle slips off but Kemerer transitions into a Navy ride. No nearfalls but good transitions by Kemerer to maintain control. Another far-side cradle for Kemerer slips loose and now Krattinger gets his one. Takedown directly into a turk ride and chancery grip and Kemerer has 6 more. Nearly a pin but Krattiger was saved by the buzzer. 

2nd period: Kemerer cuts Krattinger who immediately shoots and converts cleanly on a double. Kemerer cut unaware but escapes quickly and goes right back himself. 13-5 now in a high scoring affair. Kemerer working on top, looking for a turn. Krattinger doesn't go over but he does pick up a stall call. Period ends, Kemerer with a 13-5 lead and riding time essentially locked up.

3rd period: In neutral to begin the final stanze. Kemerer with a takedown, release and another takedown. This time Kemerer slips a turk in and goes bow and arrow and the fall! Dominant performance as Kemerer runs off the mat and into the tunnel where Sammy Brooks is waiting to chat about the victory. 

Iowa 26, Wisconsin 0

Announced attendance is 10,603, which I believe is a smidge over 2/3 full.

184 Pounds

Cash Wilcke, Iowa vs Johnny Sebastian, Wisconsin

1st period: Wilcke back in for Brands. He gets the first takedown. Sebastian escapes quickly and goes in on his own shot. The scramble leads to nothing and they're back to neutral. Peruod ends with Wiclke holding a one-point lead. 

2nd period: Sebastian escapes from bottom early and we're back to feet. Wilcke in on a shot and a loooong scramble ensues. Far ankles but no takedowns and after about a minute we get a stalemate with 42 seconds on the clock. Score knotted at 2's. Second period ends with no change to the score.

3rd period: Wilcke's turn on bottom. Wilcke escapes to regain the lead, riding time not a factor. Sebastian counters a Wilcke shot, grabs an ankle, then tracks down the second to take the first lead of the bout. A lot of time left in regulation, and Wilcke escapes to tie it back up with over a minute to go still. No more scores so we go to overtime for the first time in the dual meet. 

Sudden victory: Sebastian shoots, Wilcke reshoots, Sebastian shoots Wilcke off the mat. Could've called stalling but we get an action call. Back to the center. Collar ties but no scores. Tiebreaker time. 

Tiebreaker 1: Wilcke down. He's out almost immediately. No scores in neutral.

Tiebreaker 2: Sebastian on bottom. A rideout wins it for Wilcke, but Sebastian squashes that dream with a quick stand and escape. No more scores. Let's do it again!

Sudden victory 2: Wilcke shoots, Sebastian sprawls and re-attacks. Wilcke in trouble, fighting to stay out of danger, finally Sebastian gets his two and the Badgers get on the board!

Iowa 26, Wisconsin 3

197 Pounds

Jacob Warner, Iowa vs Taylor Watkins, Wisconsin

1st period: Warner gets the first takedown in about 30 seconds. The lumber out of bounds, Warner still in control. Watkins gets his escape after the restart, then gets pushed out of bounds and is dinged for stalling. Warner leads 2-1 with a minute left in the first, still in neutral. Warner keeps the pressure on but Watkins is prepared and the period ends without any more points.

2nd period: Wilcke stands and is up and out quickly. Circling and collar ties, then a stall warning on Wilcke this time as they go out of bounds and they say Warner didn't do enough to stay in. Warner taking ground and pummeling but can't find an opening against Watkins. Period ends and Warner has a 2 point lead.

3rd period: Watkins starts underneath and is up and out quickly. Riding time not a factor. Watkins needs a score but Warner is wining the hand fight. Time running out on Watkins. A desperation shot is stopped by Warner who snaps and spins to get two points to ice it. Iowa wins for the eighth time in nine bouts. 

Iowa 29, Wisconsin 3

285 Pounds

Tony Cassioppi, Iowa vs Trent Hillger, Wisconsin

1st period: We've had two top-5 matchups in this dual, and this may end up being one by the end of the season (or earlier). Both heavies have similar mass, although Hillger has more hair. An arm drag by Cass keeps Hillger off balance. Hillger follows up with a snatch single but Cassioppi sprawls, then reattacks when Hillger level changes back up. A back trip with a leg in the air gives Tony the first points of the bout and the crowd showers him with approbation. Hillger fighting to his feet but Cassioppi won't let him go. A scramble, Cass still in control, riding time over a minute, now the escape to make it 2-1. A challenge from Coach Bono, saying there should have been a reversal earlier int he scramble. A forward roll for Hillger had him come out the back, but Cassioppi turned and faced him in time and only had rear standing. No-call upheld. We go to the second, Cass still leading 2-1.

2nd period: Cassioppi starts on bottom. Hillger needs to rude for a bit to get the clock back in his favor. He breaks Cass down, has a boot in and is working a power half. A stalemate is called at 1:09. Cassioppi gets the escape eleven seconds after the restart. A challenge brick comes from Coach Brands, who wanted a locked hands. Instead, I believe the brick got kicked back and there is no review after Brands had a chance to rethink it. The period ends without any more scores.

3rd period: Hillger gets another turn on bottom. He's up quickly, Cassioppi doesn't want to mix it up in another scramble. 3-2 in Tony's favor, riding time not a factor. 90 seconds to go in regulation. Hillger dives for an ankle with 60 seconds to go. Cassioppi defends. Another attack by Hillger and Cassioppi is fine sprawling, not offering any reattacks of his own. Hillger again shoots, now Cassioppi picks up a stall warning. 20 seconds to go. Another shot by Hillger but Cassioppi is in position. The clock will bleed in short offense. Cassioppi upsets the #3 wrestler in the land. 

It's officially a blow out. The Badgers walk into Carver-Hawkeye but they limp out. 9 bouts to 10, the Hawkeyes win and look every bit the team title contender. 

Iowa 32, Wisconsin 3
