Penn State wrestled Iowa this weekend! Well, not really, but it'd be pretty cool if they did.

Using the magic of the transitive property, both the best and worst thing in wrestling, we can do a little compare and contrast. Iowa wrestled Kent State on Friday, and Penn State faced the Golden Flashes on Sunday, with eight of the same guys used in each dual.

Now let's go weight-by-weight and give a little more context to what we saw. At 125, Kent State used Tomas Gutierrez on Friday and Jake Ferri on Sunday. At 157, Kent State went with Richard Jackson on Friday and Joe Andrassy on Sunday. From 149 to 165, both teams got the sam result: pinfalls. Lastly, Iowa used backups at 174, 197, and 285 pounds.

125 Pounds

It doesn't really matter that Spencer Lee faced Tomas Gutierrez and Devin Schnupp went against Jake Ferri. There's no reason the outcomes wouldn't have been the same no matter who was sent out, and Lee would clearly be favored to tech or pin Schnupp in a head-to-head. The only wrinkle is who the Nittany Lion's starter will be second semester, though that probably won't matter against the defending national champ.

133 Pounds

This should be fun. Tim Rooney pushed Austin DeSanto to the brink, scoring the first two takedowns and being in control for most of the match. But on Sunday, Roman Bravo-Young completely dominated Rooney, particularly from top. He was on pace to get riding time if the match had gone the distance, and turned him twice with a bar-half, the last time for a pin. RBY won the transitive battle by a landslide in this one.

141 Pounds

The rankings favor Nick Lee, but the results showed Max Murin taking the lead. The redshirt freshman Murin pinned Cory Simpson with a cradle, while Lee could "only" rack up an 18-2 tech. PSU fans will point out that Lee teched Simpson more quickly than Murin got the pin, and they are right.

149 Pounds

Once again, the rankings lose. Jarod Verkleeren, who might not even be the starter when it's all said and done, pinned Kody Komara in 1:20, while it took Pat Lugo all the way until 2:17 to pin Simpson. Verkleeren fought off an elbow control duck and then went double overs to fight off Komara's bodylock, and Lugo locked up a cradle off a re-attack.

157 Pounds

Both team's starters got the full six points. Jason Nolf put on a display for the Rec Hall crowd, scoring four takedowns in 31 seconds: elbow control duck, double, go-behind, and ankle pick, ultimately finishing off the match with a crossface cradle. Young sealed the deal on a whipover.

165 Pounds

The only time Alex Marinelli wrestled Vincenzo Joseph last season, the Bull won. Against Isaac Bast, Marinelli got his pin a minute and 24 seconds faster than Joseph did, so we're giving Iowa the hypothetical win in this weekend's transitive property match.

174 Pounds

PSU basically won this one when it was revealed Michael Kemerer wouldn't be wrestling on Friday. Hopefully Kemdawg makes his debut up two weights this weekend against Princeton. Hall hit a classic Marky Mixer to open another season with a pin in front a sellout crowd at Rec Hall.

184 Pounds

The 184lb starters met in last year's dual at 197 with Shakur Rasheed winning 11-2, and both have now dropped down a weight. Rasheed got the fastest fall of the dual against Kent State, and Cash Wilcke backed up a little of Tom Brands' "hungry like a wolf, not a fat cat" about the newer, slimmer Wilcke.

197 Pounds

Like 174, Iowa was behind the 8-ball on Media Day as soon we found out Jacob Warner would miss the Frenzy at the Field House. In his stead, Connor Corbin won a tight one 11-9 over Shane Mast. Bo Nickal did Bo Nickal things and picked up yet another first period pin. No one in college wrestling has spent less average time on the mat since the start of last season than Nickal.

285 Pounds

The Hawkeyes have top ranked Sam Stoll, and PSU has second ranked Nick Nevills, but neither wrestled this weekend. Stoll's backup Aaron Costello got through with a 4-1 win over Billy Bolia, but Costello's spot duty probably ends this weekend. On the other side, Cassar dominated Bolia in a 17-2 tech and might just force Nevills to be on the bench this season, with an outside shot that the two-time AA receives a medical redshirt.
