USA Wrestling has announced that a Special UWW Junior World Team Wrestle-off for the 2018 Junior World Team spot at 57 kg/125.5 lbs. between 2017 Junior World champion Daton Fix (Sand Springs, Okla./Titan Mercury WC) and 2018 Junior World Team Trials champion Brandon Courtney (Goodyear, Ariz./Arizona State) will be held on Sunday, July 15 in the FargoDome in Fargo, N.D.

The best-of-three Championship Series will begin at4:30 p.m. CT. Athletes will weigh in on Sunday, two hours before the best-of-three series begins.

This Special Wrestle-off will be held alongside the U.S. Marines Junior and Cadet Nationals, which are taking place in the FargoDome at that time.

Fix was second in the 2018 U.S. Senior Open, and placed second on the Senior National Team when he was defeated in Final X in Lincoln by Thomas Gilman at 57 kg. Fix took a redshirt year as a freshman for Oklahoma State this past season. He did not participate in either the UWW Junior World Team Trials or the UWW Junior Nationals this year, as he was competing at the Senior level.

The provision of the Junior Men’s World Team Trials Procedures which allowed Fix to request a Special Wrestle-off for the Junior World Team follows:

“A delay in a final wrestle-off may occur if a 2016 or 2017 Junior FS World Team Member places in the top 3 at the 2018 U.S. Senior Freestyle Open and then competes in the 2018 U.S. Senior Freestyle World Team Trials Challenge Tournament or the 2018 U.S. Senior Freestyle Final X series. The 2016 or 2017 Junior FS World Team Members, who place in the top 3 at the 2018 U.S. Senior Freestyle Open can  only be granted the wrestle-off at the same weight in which they competed at during the 2018 U.S. Senior Freestyle Open.”

Courtney, who attends Arizona State, won the Junior World Team Trials at 57 kg in Rochester, Minn. in May, defeating 2017 Junior World Team member Malik Heinselman of the Titan Mercury WC in two straight matches, 10-0 and 11-0. Courtney was also the 2018 UWW Junior Nationals champion, where he beat Heinselman, 10-3.
