Back in 2016 Jason Renteria made a verbal commitment to Iowa which ultimately didn’t work out and ended with him going to Nebraska instead.

After spending a year as a Cornhusker, Renteria, who finished as an NCAA qualifier at 133, was granted a release.  Now, it seems that Iowa is once again the right fit for the former Illinois stud. Renteria confirmed to FloWrestling today that he will be headed to Hawkeye country. As a true freshman he placed fifth at the Big Ten tournament to qualify for NCAAs and finished with an 8-4 record after coming out of his redshirt midway through the season.

"I choose Iowa because of everything," Renteria said. "It’s closer to home and my parents can always come visit me whenever and also watch me wrestle in Carver every single dual. I liked the atmosphere around the guys. They want to win a title and they see it as why not us. I really like knowing me and Spencer will be partners as I took my visit this weekend. We rolled around and we automatically clicked. We asked each other about certain positions and moves and taught each other a lot in just a matter of a hour and 15 minute roll around. I grew up wrestling with Jacob Warner and we always wanted to be teammates again. I love the coaches' mentality and the way they coach their athletes. They are honest and blunt with them. I think not only myself, but as a team we are really going to be special and something to be dealt with in the future."

Renteria also looked at Fresno State and Ohio State, but as you can see Iowa is what fit best.
