Match Notes: #6 Oklahoma State At #5 Iowa

One of the nation's best rivalries is renewed today, and we are doing live updates for each match. The fifth-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes host the #6 Oklahoma State Cowboys at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa, in the two teams' traditional January dual meet.

There are up to five ranked matchups, including #6 Nick Piccininni vs. #11 Spencer Lee at 125lb, #7 Chandler Rogers vs. #11 Alex Marinelli at 165lb, #3 Preston Weigel vs. #5 Cash Wilcke at 197lb, and #11 Derek White vs. #3 Sam Stoll at 285lb.

As expected, the dual will start at 125lb. True freshman sensation Spencer Lee will wrestle in his second career match at Carver-Hawkeye against All-American Nick Piccininni, who finished fourth at NCAAs last year.

125lb: #11 Spencer Lee (Iowa) vs. #6 Nick Piccininni (Oklahoma State)

1st period: This will be Piccininni's first time wrestling at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. A huge matchup for both guys, and Lee will follow it up with another big test against Nathan Tomasello of Ohio State. And we're off. Lee trying to close distance early, going to his Russian tie. Picc breaks and clears, but Lee shoots in, doubles off and finishes on the edge 40 seconds in. Lee immediately attacking wrists, gets that bar/wrist tilt and 6-0 a minute in. Picc bases up but still can't free his wrist. Out of bounds, 1:21 to go. Good jump for Picc, working a tripod, and he's out. Lee into short offense off a Picc shot, able to finish the counter go behind and it's 8-1 already. Stall called against Picc and the Iowa crowd is loving it.

2nd period: Over two minutes of riding time for Lee, and Picc takes neutral. Much slower pace in the first 30 seconds, both guys keeping space. Spencer not forcing anything with this big lead. No leg attacks in the first minute. Low leg attack for Picc, tried to come out the back. Lee doing the splits now with the Cowboy on his right leg, trying to fight hands but Picc gets it shelfed. Lee gives up the takedown after bailing out from a Picc cradle. Big escape for Lee right before time expires.

3rd period: Lee goes under, has a lot of riding time in his favor. Taking his time working up, was on his feet but Picc brings him back down to the mat. Oklahoma State doing a good job knocking down riding time, but not able to work any turns. Final minute and this matched has kind of stalled. Lee escapes with 46 to go, 10-3 in favor of Lee but Picc shoots right away and it's 10-5 now. Piccininni has a cradle locked up! Short time, making this interesting. But that'll do it, Lee wins 10-5 and knocks off another All American.

133lb: Phillip Laux (Iowa) vs. #4 Kaid Brock (Oklahoma State)

1st period: This is one that the Cowboys will be expecting and needing bonus points early on. Laux takes the first shot, but stuffed and extended on the mat. Stalemated at 2:22. Classic Kaid shuck to end the first minute. Looks like he wants to earn some riding time before cutting him. Another slideby and it's 4-1 now as Kaid applies back pressure to build up RT. Might try to ride out this period actually.

2nd period: Brock goes down, scape seven seconds in. Another shot by Laux, but once again stuffed by Brock. Stalemated and we are halfway through the match, 5-1 lead for the Cowboy. Brock's upperbody stuff continues to work, 7-1 now without really touching Laux's legs. Escape, 45 seconds left. His fourth takedown is no surprise, another shuck, and working on a major now. Rides him out, well over two minutes of RT.

3rd period: Laux goes under. Brock hasn't really worked for a turn, but can seal RT if he hangs on long enough. Once again, that shuck hits so clean. Laux fighting well but can't stop the slideby, 11-4 after the escape. Laux not conceding, keeps shooting but another elbow pass and Brock is up 13-4 with a minute left. Riding time is locked. One more escape, Brock takes his first shot and finishes. Tech looks out of reach, but a big smile on John Smith's face. One final escape,  Laux shoots but the major is done. Cowboys lead the Hawkeyes 4-3 heading into 141. Brock wins 16-6.

141lb: Vince Turk (Iowa) vs. #4 Dean Heil (Oklahoma State)

1st period: Turk gets a turn here after Carter Happel wrestled last week for Iowa. Heil gets a takedown on a single in the first 15 seconds. Heil looks very intent to put his two match losing streak behind him. Riding wrists very tough as he gets up over a minute of RT. Crowd quieting as Turk gives up a stall call. Heil keeping a foot in the cylinder, but finally goes out with 58 seconds left. Restart doesn't seem to be affecting his ride, keeping Turk's head down and hands on the mat. Period ends 2-0 with 2:42 of riding time. Gotta wonder if the Cowboys staff wants him to push for a major.

2nd period: Heil starts down. Crowd got loud as Turk tried a tilt, but Heil gets out and they go out of bounds, 3-0 lead for Oklahoma State. Turk tries a front head, but stalemated as Heil had a vice grip on his elbow. Final minute of this second period and Heil is keeping his distance. Turk trying a russian or bundle or key lock, can't quite tell, but tying up Heil's arms. Still over 2 mins of RT.

3rd period: Turk takes neutral. Not a lot happening in the first 30 seconds. Major seems out of the question, kind of a moral victory for Iowa, if there can be such things in a heated rivalry like this. Turk takes a shot, riding time is locked, has Heil's leg up in the air. On the edge now and Turk is putting a lot of pressure on the right thigh. 4-0 win for Heil, Cowboys lead 7-3 after three matches.

149lb: #2 Brandon Sorensen (Iowa) vs. #13 Boo Lewallen (Oklahoma State)

1st period: Boo Lewallen gets the call for the Cowboys, still in somewhat of a roster battle (probably) with Geo Martinez. Sorensen with the pancake and back points! 4-0 lead in the first minute. Crowd boos as John Smith comes to the head table to have a word with the ref. Shakes his head and does not look happy. 1:43 to go on the restart. Lewallen quick out and right back to a collar tie. Sorensen shooting but Lewallen fights off the swing single, final minute now. Sorensen overtie to single, changes directions and puts Lewallen on his butt. Can get close to a minute of RT, 6-1 lead as the period nears its end. Stall called against Lewallen to close out the period.

2nd period: Lewallen escape in the first 20 seconds, and quick ankle pick to make it 6-4, drastically changing this match. Lewallen doesn't come up off the ankles though and gives up a stall, making it 7-4. Caution on Lewallen, 1:17 to go. Sorensen quick out to make it 8-4. Hawks would like bonus here to tie it up or take the lead (obviously). Sorensen ties, Boo clears it. Left side shot, finishes does Sorensen to make it 10-4. Looks like he wants to ride out this period. Yet another stall and it's 11-4 now, major back in reach depending on riding time.

3rd period: Sorensen goes underneath. Out quickly, and holding a major now at 12-4. Crowd clapping with 90 seconds to go. Increases his lead, quick finish to make it 14-4. But he cuts him, must want the tech. Final minute now. Sorensen's conversion time has to be excellent, another couple takedowns and it's 18-6 with riding time locked and 32 to go. Can he get the tech, needs two takedowns. Brands with his fingers up and firing up the crowd as Sorensen closes out the tech. Iowa leads 8-7 with Michael Kemerer coming up.

157lb: #2 Michael Kemerer (Iowa) vs. Jonce Blaylock (Oklahoma State)

1st period: Kemerer has been a bonus machine thus far, let's see how much he can increase the Hawks lead. Even extended can finish the shot, and he's got Blaylock flat. Out of bounds 59 seconds in, caution Kem on the restart. Was working a crossface cradle before they went out, no chance to this time, got rolled through and Blaylock gets the escape. Iowa picks up a point when Blaylock gets dinged for hands to the face, hard to give a heavily favored opponent free points like that. Last minute of the first, Kemerer coming out back off a righty single, swings through and almost gets the two. Finally comes behind and takes a 5-1 lead.

2nd period: Blaylock goes down and coach Smith is once again shaking his head. And we just figured out why! Team point taken away from the Cowboys, it's 8-6 now after Smith was on the mat. Blaylock up to his feet but Kemdawg drops to a shot, no points given so far. Ok so he did get an escape, should be 7-2 now and Kemerer has a turk. Killed a lot of time with that turk but no points off it, still 7-2 heading into the third.

3rd period: Kem takes bottom, but isn't there long. Effectively 9-2 with riding time and there is one fan that is VERY loud. Last 90 seconds, Kem looking patient. Jonce with the shot, trying to come out the back, now Kem doing the splits. Blaylock has it shelfed, hands on the far hip, running out of real estate. Wow, tough defense there from Iowa, the Cowboy was very close but ran out of room. No major and the home team leads 11-6.

165lb: #11 Alex Marinelli (Iowa) vs. #7 Chandler Rogers (Oklahoma State)

1st period: Tallying up individual match scores in case we need them later for criteria. Iowa has outscored Oklahoma State 48-35 through the first five bouts. Ok actually just checked the tiebreaking criteria and that does not matter. First, is total individual match victories. Next, is highest number of six-point wins. We'll get into more later if necessary.

But let's get to the match at hand. Marinelli has yet to lose this year, Rogers is always a threat to pin. Marinelli looking for a go behind early, then a double, but Rogeres fought it off and now into a collar tie. Lot of action in that first 30 seconds, another shot stuffed by Rogers. The Cowboy really trying to hang on that head, Marinelli looks like he's down to stay in the pocket. Rogers shoots, misses but is able to square up before Marinelli can finish the go behind, stalemate with 52 seconds left. Marinelli with a simple mid level single, gets his hands locked, but Rogers gets his foot down and clears out. First period ends scoreless.

2nd period: Rogers goes under, out in the first 20 seconds. Still a lot of overties from these two, and now Rogers keeping the distance. Shot from space, dives in on Marinelli's right leg. The Hawkeye is on his butt, locked in the crotch. Wow no two as Marinelli works back up to start feeding hips. And finally finishes a go behind, extended finish but breaks the grip of Rogers and finishes the takedown. Cuts him and the period ends 2-2.

3rd period: Marinelli on bottom, Rogers thigh prys but Marinelli escapes and riding time is not a factor. This one feeling a lot like Marinelli's Midlands semi with Richie Lewis. Marinelli the one now fighting for collar ties and killing clock keeping Rogers locked up. Final 45 seconds and the crowd is anticipating a win. Rogers shoots, Marinelli stays square, now an underhook on the mat. One more swing from Rogers, tries to peak out but Marinelli chases him down for the 5-2 win. Iowa leads 14-6 with four matches to go.

174lb: Joey Gunther (Iowa) vs. #12 Jacobe Smith (Oklahoma State)

1st period: This is where the Cowboys start being favored to pick up matches. Gunther looking double unders early to keep Smith on his heels. Not a bad idea as Jacobe is most dangerous when he can keep driving his feet. Trying to work Oklahoma State over to the edge. No shots halfway through this period. Out of bounds with a short scoring opportunity. Smith now trying to keep his distance, low double, chooses the right leg to single, trying to run the pipe. Over on the edge, Gunther jumping out, but no stall call. No point, Oklahoma State corner doesn't look happy. Gunther back to digging underhooks, under 30. A rare scoreless first period from a Jacobe Smith match, usually there's points on the board either way when he wrestles.

2nd period: Strong handlebar mustache from Gunther and Smith starts down. Escape Smith 15 or 16 seconds in, let's see if Gunther's underhooks can still slow Smith down. Coach Morningstar getting louder now, wanting more from Gunther's underhooks. Smith not having a lot of room to shoot here. Iowa crowd clapping it up as this period nears its end.

3rd period: 1-0 heading into the final frame and Gunther chooses bottom. Riding time not a factor but Jacobe is trying to make it an issue. Heavy back pressure, now switches off to a double in front and stall against Smith. Gunther gets out and the riding time is in Jacobe's favor but I don't believe he has it. It's 1-1 with 46 to go. Smith on a single, but Gunther heading toward the edge again. Smith circles and grabs the second ankle to make it 3-1 with 10 seconds left. 3-1 win for Smith and it's 14-9 with 184 up next.

184lb: Mitch Bowman (Iowa) vs. Keegan Moore (Oklahoma State)

1st period: Swing match here, only bout with no ranked wrestler on either side. Bowman driving through a shot but out of bounds and no stall or points. Coach Tom Brands wants them to take a second look at it. Double for Bowman, Moore tries a neckwrench, and Bowman gets rear standing as they go out. Also of note, Iowa cannot seal the match here. A pin would make it 20-9 with two matches to go. More likely though, the rest of the matches will be regular decisions. Ok, so Iowa gets a takedown, original call was action. 2-0 Iowa with 2:27 to go. Moore up to his feet, Bowman switches to a single, gives up a stall but gets Moore back on the mat. Escape Moore with two minutes to go. Bowman keeps shooting, head behind the knee, reaching for the far ankle on the edge and traps the left leg to go up 4-1. Bowman picking up some RT here. Moore up and out and once again, fighting off a shot on the edge. Cowboy coaches gesturing hard at the mat, no points. 1:19 of RT and Bowman winning 4-2.

2nd period: Moore chooses down, up to his feet but drive off the mat 13 seconds in. Call on that mat is an escape, it's going to a review. Trying to decide takedown or reversal. So the call is reversal, but Bowman up quickly and escape. High crotch by Bowman gets stalemated. Another shot by Bowman, but flat on his stomach and extended. Moore breaks the lock and finishes, 6-5 lead but lets him out quick to tie it up 6-6. That's how the period ends.

3rd period: Bowman on bottom, has 1:23 of RT and up in a second or two. Shoots in quick, not giving Moore time to set his feet. Bowman finally finishes, had the leg shelfed, lifts and trips for the 8-6 lead, effectively 9-6. Minute left. Riding time locked and the boo birds come out as Moore forces a restart with 34 seconds left. Bowman gets him flat and that'll do it. Iowa leads 17-9 with two matches left, the Cowboys need a lot of bonus to win this one.

197lb: #5 Cash Wilcke (Iowa) vs. #3 Preston Weigel (Oklahoma State)

1st period: Wilcke in a great spot here. Win seals it for the Hawkeyes, and Weigel doesn't always put up bonus points against highly ranked guys. Stalemated 35 seconds in, both guys fighting for a collar tie. Weigel looking spry today on his feet. Halfway through the period, classic 197 match, lots of collar tying, locked up nose to nose. Weigel using his range finder now. Late attempt by Wilcke, but no points. Scores at a premium in this bout.

2nd period: Weigel starting on bottom. Front trip by Wilcke, and 13 seconds of riding time. First shot by Weigel and he finishes, he is very tough on top, known for his cross wrist tilt. Restart with 36 to go and Weigel is nearing riding time, which in a match like this could be the difference. This one kind of going like the Heil/Turk match did. 3-0 Weigel with 1:02 of riding time.

3rd period: Wilcke chooses neutral. Another single leg finish for Weigel. 5-0, with RT, so a major is possible. 1:29 to go, looks like he'll try to get the major with a turn. Wilcke up to his base, but head down and a lot of weight on his back. Wilcke gets called for stalling, but Weigel not really close to a turn so far. 6-0 win, 17-12 Iowa lead. Derek White needs an upset by fall.

285lb: #3 Sam Stoll (Iowa) vs. #11 Derek White (Oklahoma State)

1st period: Time for the big boys. Stoll digging in early. Not so large knee brace on Stoll's left leg, White with just a normal black knee pad on his right knee. Stoll tries Russian but White clears out. Now Stoll wants an underhook halfway through. And Stoll finally gets his beloved bodylock, but White breaks free, 45 seconds to go. Late shot by Stoll, White stuffs it.

2nd period: White starts on bottom. Great back pressure from Stoll early, White up to his feet, but quick mat return and out of bounds. 1:38 to go, Oklahoma State throws the brick. Looking for a locked hands. Long review here. First point goes on the board as locked hands is called against Stoll. Back to action and quick escape by White, about 20 ish seconds of riding time for Stoll. Back to that over under position, now a front head by Stoll. Iowa's turn to challenge now, saying Stoll got around behind with White's hands on the mat. Stoll stuffed the head, was definitely close to coming behind. Could go either way, but certainly wouldn't be surprised if a takedown was confirmed. And it is, so 2-1 Stoll with 1:04 left in the period. Another quick escape, 3-2 in favor of White and riding time not a factor. Back to collar ties and the crowd is clapping as time is running out for the Cowboys.

3rd period: Stoll goes underneath. Out quickly, tie match, riding time time not a factor. White still needs a pin to win the dual, so Stoll doesn't need to do a whole lot. Under a minute, looking for an underhook, then a shot but White scoots out of it. Duck under by White, rear standing but Stoll all the way off the mat and out of bounds, 35 seconds left. Coach John Smith throws the brick again, ref asking what the challenge is. Smith challenging for a takedown. No points, back to neutral, Stoll running White down, going key lock.

Overtime: Stoll shoots, extended, now working up to his feet but out of bounds with 19 to go. Heading to the first tiebreaker now, Stoll goes down, out in three seconds. White's turn on bottom now, out in five seconds. Back in sudden victory, Stoll finishes an extended go behind and Iowa wins 20-12.

Next up for Oklahoma State, home on Friday the 19th against West Virginia live on Flo. Iowa will head to Ohio State on Sunday the 21st.
