Cohlton Schultz vs. Seth Nevills May Finally Happen

It’s the heavyweight match we wanted at Ironman but was stalled before the first whistle even blew. If projections hold, we may just see undefeated three-time California state champion Seth Nevills take on Cadet Greco world champ Cohlton Schultz at the Doc Buchanan Invitational in Clovis, CA, this weekend.

The two were both slated to compete at Ironman in early December; however, the No. 3-ranked Nevills did not pass the skin check and wasn’t allowed to enter the tournament. Ultimately, the second-ranked Schultz went on to dominate the field and win the title.

In the last few years, Schultz and Nevills have claimed Doc Buchanan tournament titles at 220 and 285lb, respectively, but they've been on a collision course ever since Schultz, a Ponderosa High School (CO) junior, decided to move up to heavyweight this season.

Outside of Nevills' tough battle at FloNationals, where the Clovis (CA) senior was nearly upset en route to the finals before claiming the title, this will be his most challenging high school test to date. In preparation for this season, the Penn State signee entered a college tournament and placed third, taking a loss to No. 13 Youssif Hemida of Maryland.

When looking at this matchup, a few things stick out in the different styles of these large high schoolers.

Schultz works great from a tie, which is obvious from his Greco background. If he can control his ties, such as the underhook or two-on-one, it could work very well in his favor to frustrate Nevills, who works a bit better from a traditional collar tie, or even from space with a quick snatch single. Nevills can finish high or even go to a crack down position as well. Needless to say, the battle will be won in the tie-up.

The X-factor here is Schultz's top game. He will throw in the boots and crank a power half; however, it will be very tough to control Nevills from his strong quad pod stand-up. So again, the winner of this bout will be the guy who controls his ties to dictate the match.
