Top 16 Upsets From Week 5 Of College Wrestling

This past weekend's Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational was an all-timer. It was so crazy that we had to expand our usual dozen by an extra 33 percent to 16 insane upsets this week.

16) 165: Jon Viruet (Brown) F6:56 over No. 13 Keilan Torres (Northern Colorado)

Viruet's takedown with 18 seconds sealed the match, and his pin was the cherry on top to push the Brown Bear into the round of 16. WATCH MATCH HERE

15) 165: Zac Carson (Eastern Michigan) 7-2 over No. 12 Branson Ashworth (Wyoming)

Ashworth went from "Mr. Vegas" last year to losing in the first round this year.

14) 125: Michael Russo (Cornell) 7-3 over No. 11 Louie Hayes (Virginia)

Hayes rebounded from this to finish seventh, but losing in a pigtail was not a great way to get his tournament started. WATCH MATCH HERE

13) 125: Christian Moody (Oklahoma) 8-5 over No. 10 Luke Welch (Purdue)

A sleeper knocked off a dark horse in this round of 16 thriller. WATCH MATCH HERE

12) Nick Zanetta (Pittsburgh) 6-4 over No. 9 Javier Gasca (Michigan State)

Zanetta won the takedown battle two-to-one to cement this first round upset. WATCH MATCH HERE

11) Will Bardezbain (Kent State) 18-15 over No. 9 Dalton Macri (North Carolina)

Bardezbain gave Macri a rude welcome back in only his third match of the year.

10) Shawn Streck (Purdue) 10-8 over No. 8 Ryan Solomon (Pittsburgh)

What a great win for the young Purdue heavyweight, and Streck backed it up by doing it AGAIN in the fifth-place match — that time more emphatically with a 33-second pin. WATCH MATCH HERE

9) Coleman Hammond (CSUB) 19-14 over No. 10 Clay Ream (NDSU)

Hammond beat No. 19 Taleb Rahmani of Pitt 14-8 in his next match. Also, if you're wondering why Tristan Rifanburg isn't on this list at the same weight, it's because his win over Collin Heffernan was a med forfeit.

8) Mikey Labriola (Nebraska) over No. 14 Jacobe Smith (Oklahoma State)

A hack to make this list: be a true freshman and win over a ranked guy. Labriola checked both prerequisites with this win in the Bob Smith Open finals.

7) Taylor Venz (Nebraska) 9-3 over No. 6 Zack Zavatsky (Virginia Tech)

Talk about a revelation. Venz was always rock solid in high school, but I don't think many outside the Pinnacle or Huskers rooms saw Venz beating Zavatsky. Or No. 7 Drew Foster. Or No. 8 Jordan Ellingwood. Or No. 9 Ricky Robertson. Have yourself a weekend, kid.

6) Nolan Kistler (Cal Baptist) 7-6 over No. 8 Brandon Womack (Cornell)

Offering 10 shekels to anyone who can name Cal Baptist's mascot, without looking it up, before reading the end of this paragraph. Kistler's win over an All-American from last year might just be the first big win by a CBU program transitioning to the Division I level. Great victory for the Lancers! WATCH MATCH HERE

5) No. 11 Yianni Diakomihalis (Cornell) 4-2SV over No. 3 Bryce Meredith (Wyoming)

All aboard the Yianni bandwagon, there still room on board. There's no reason to think Meredith couldn't reverse the result later in the year, but now we know Yianni can compete with the best in the country. WATCH MATCH HERE

4) No. 12 Taylor LaMont (Utah Valley) 4-3 over No. 3 Ethan Lizak (Minnesota)

Knocking off the NCAA finalist was a huge reason as to why LaMont was our wrestler of the week

3) Tom Lane (Cal Poly) 13-3 over No. 5 Kevin Beazley (Michigan)

I'm not sure who Tom Lane is, but he just majored an All-American who is currently ranked fifth in the country and wrestling for a team trophy contender. WATCH MATCH HERE

2) No. 15 Evan Wick (Wisconsin) 8-4 over No. 3 Logan Massa (Michigan)

While not second in terms of "unranked over ranked," Massa is considered the one guy who could knock off Vincenzo Joseph or Isaiah Martinez to win 165 this year. Wick won the takedown battle, earned a stalling point, and got riding time.

1) Austin DeSanto (Drexel) 22-10 over No. 2 Stevan Micic (Michigan)

Aside from putting up 15 points in the first period and nearly teching the nation's second-ranked wrestler, the true freshman knocked off No. 7 Dom Forys and No. 12 Dennis Gustafson. If nothing else, the kid is phenomenally fun to watch on his feet.
