PEDs May Keep Narsingh Yadav Out Of Rio
As if we didn't have enough doping controversy this year, this week news came out that India's Narsingh Yadav allegedly failed a PED test.

Yadav was a world bronze medalist last year at 74kg and is currently ranked No. 9 by United World Wrestling. According to the Indian Express, both his A and B samples came back positive for Metadienone, an anabolic steroid which falls under the Nandrolone group.

News broke today that his replacement will not be Sushil Kumar, but will instead be Parveen Rana, who represented India at 74kg in last month's World Cup. This would seem to confirm India's Sports Minister excluding Yadav from the 119-person all sport roster India is sending to Rio.

In a late breaking development, it appears Yadav has filed a police report and named a junior wrestler who trains with Sushil Kumar. The junior wrestler in question is alleged as having sabotaged Yadav by spiking his food at a training camp with a banned substance.

WFI In Yadav's Corner

Both Narsingh Yadav and his roommate, 66kg Greco specialist Sandeep Yadav, were tested on June 25th at the Sports Authority of India in Sonepat. Narsingh Yadav was also tested on July 5th, but the results of that test are unknown.

The president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) said Yadav was set up and that they would fight for justice, but it appears the timing of the failed test prevented them from fighting in favor of Yadav.

"It is our duty to protect Narsingh and all our wrestlers. Narsingh's record is clean. He is someone who never shied away from dope tests," WFI president Brij Bushan Sharan told CNN-News18.

The failed test is alleged as being caused by Sushil Kumar, one of the greatest wrestlers in Indian history.

Kumar

The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) awarded the Rio spot to Yadav last month. The high court in Delhi issued a judgement on the situation after Sushil Kumar became involved. Yadav earned the Olympic qualification with his bronze at worlds, but Kumar wanted the spot despite not participating in India's Olympic Trials.

Throughout the dispute, Indian wrestling officials and athletes were split on what to do. Once the matter was brought to court, it was determined that no wrestle off would occur, meaning it would be settled in board rooms and courtrooms.

After the Delhi ruling, the ministry of sport in India officially added Yadav to the Rio roster and the matter was deemed to be over. Until this week when news broke and even WFI officials believe Kumar did something to cause the positive test. Now, neither Yadav nor Kumar will be wrestling next month.

Rana was a late addition to the fold in this controversy. He has never competed in a senior level world championships, but has been their entry for the Asian championships four times, although he has never won a medal.

The Dispute

With both the A and B samples coming back positive, it means Yadav would have needed to prove his food was contaminated in a conspiracy to prevent him from competing. That meeting with India's National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) was reported as being slated for Wednesday the 27th, but UWW had apparently already informed the Indian Olympic Association of their options.

The Indian Express and India Today separated reportedly unnamed sources indicating a mysterious person came to the kitchen of the hostel mess hall during the training camp. Each report says the person dumped an unknown powder substance on the food on June 5th that is believed to have caused the failed test.

"The fact that Narisngh's teammate at the camp has also tested positive for the same substance, it clearly looks to be a foul play. Both the wrestlers were consuming the same supplements as they were roommates. It arises suspicion," WFI assistant secretary Vinod Tomar said to the Indian Express.

At issue is that Yadav took what seems to be an outdated anabolic steroid, one that makes you gain weight. Tomar went on to tell the Indian Express that the dose was so high in the sample it seems clear it could only be a conspiracy.

While the sport's governing body may have announced the decision, it appears the NADA hearing will still be happening. As of now, Rana is India's provisional entry until NADA can determine whether or not the failed test was due to conspiracy.
