Two-Mat Triangular a Hit at American
Teague Moore called it “double the action in half the time.â€
The American University wrestling head coach decided to bring out a second mat for a mid-January triangular meet with Columbia and Gardner-Webb. Wrestling mats covered the length of the court at Bender Arena and fans were treated to a Sunday afternoon of action that was reminiscent of a tournament-style event.
“This format allows fans to see more in a three-hour period of wrestling,†said Moore, now in his third season as head coach at AU. “This is the most efficient way to run three dual meets in one day.
“For a fan, I think this was a lot of fun. I don’t know many wrestling fans who like to sit through six hours of dual meets on a Sunday.
“As a coach who has taken part in this format, I like it because my student-athletes remain individually focused while also getting a chance to see their opponent compete in a bout,†said Moore. “It’s very similar to the tournament format we see in the postseason.â€
The triangular was split into three sessions, with brief intermissions between. Five lightweight bouts between two teams were held on one mat, while heavyweights from another dual-meet pairing wrestled on the second mat.
Over the course of the three sessions, each dual meet was resolved. American wrestled on both mats in the final session as the Eagles lost to Columbia on one mat but finished with a win over Gardner-Webb on the other.
With three Eagles listed in the most recent NCAA Coaches Panel Rankings, American is preparing for its appearance in the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association championships on March 8 and 9 and the NCAA Championships March 20 to 22.
