5 Things You Should Know

1. Iowa State is built for duals, that’s why an Arizona State win — even at home — will be a tall task. The Cyclones have all 10 wrestlers ranked in the top 33 and have faced three top 15 programs this season — with a lone setback to #2 Iowa.

Iowa State is built for tournaments, too. The Cyclones won the prestigious Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational against several of the top teams in the country.

Arizona State has four wrestlers ranked in the top five, but 125-pound Richie Figueroa likely won’t be in the line-up. He was injured during his opening match at Midlands where his team placed 11th.

2. Jacori Teemer (Arizona State) — a two-time All-American who medically redshirted last season — is coming off of a Midlands title. He is facing freshman Cody Chittum (Iowa State) who is better than his #22 ranking. This is a must-win weight for the Sun Devils to stay with the Cyclones.

3. The heavyweight showdown between #5 Cohlton Schultz (Arizona State) and #3 Yonger Bastida (Iowa State) could be the match of the night. Schultz, a Greco-Roman specialist who could make the 2024 Olympic team, is a three-time All-American, a 2022 national finalist, and a 2023 US Greco National champion, who is expected to make his season debut against Iowa State. We'll see how he makes the transition from Greco to college wrestling.

Bastida moved up from 197 pounds and is undefeated (12-0) at his new weight. He placed fifth at the 2022 NCAA Championships but didn’t place last year. This is a clash of styles that could determine the dual. Hopefully, both go upper body and let it fly.

4. Third-ranked Kyle Parco (Arizona State), a three-time All-American, medically forfeited to Kannon Webster (Illinois) during a consolation match at Midlands. A potential showdown with Casey Swiderski (Iowa State) will determine seeding at the NCAA Championships and might determine the direction of this dual. Parco and Teemer need wins for the Sun Devils to stay competitive. Parco defeated Swiderski, 4-2, at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, so this is an opportunity for Swiderski to get one back.

5. David Carr is in the homestretch of a college career that includes three top-three finishes at the NCAA Championships (1st in 2021, 3rd in 2022, and 2nd in 2023). Arizona State didn’t send a 165-pounder to Midlands, but former Oklahoma State wrestler Chance McLane (4-5) wrestled in all three duals and the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. This is an opportunity for Carr to score bonus points for his team and break the dual open for his team.
