2017 World Championships - Day Two Live Updates
We will be doing live updates for all 12 medal matches this evening live from Paris, France.

130kg Gold: Riza KAYAALP (TUR) vs. Heiki NABI (EST)

1st period - A great battle of world champs here. Our last Greco match of the week. First passive of the match goes against Kayaalp. Nabi said in an interview with Joe Rau that size doesn't matter and he would use his speed to overmatch Riza. Looked like Kayaalp was about to take a lead, but a straight push is called on a pushout. Nabi gives up two passives and trails 1-0. Another passive against Nabi. Kayaalp is hanging on that head and the period ends.

2nd period - Last period of Greco. Last match of the night. Two mammoths in the center.  Another point for Kayaalp after the passive and Nabi has to go into overdrive soon to move the barrel chested Turk around and try to get two. Nabi is on the board but not much time left. And Kayaalp gets his third world title. Possibly a Top-5 Greco heavyweight of all-time. Thanks for joining us folks. We'll be back tomorrow for the women.

130kg Bronze: Mykola KUCHMII (UKR) vs. Yasmani ACOSTA FERNANDEZ (CHI)

1st period - Acosta trying to Kuchmi in the zone, and Kuchmi is hit with a passive. Passive confirmed against UKR and CHI leads 1-0. This is the first medal match in Chilean history at any level, but Acosta was born in Cuba. Acosta continues to move him around the mat, and the ref stops the action.

2nd period - Back to action, and  another passive against UKR. Kuchmi dances out of the zone and there is a stoppage. Into the final minute and Acosta goes up 2-0 on yet another passive. The first ever medal for Chile! Also, once again, Lopez's backups are now world medalists.

130kg Bronze: Kiryl HRYSHCHANKA (BLR) vs. Oscar PINO HINDS (CUB)

1st period - Closing out with the big boys. Pino Hinds going up 1-0 as most others have on passivities.

2nd period - Pino Hinds piling on the passives. CUB gets a stepout right after getting hit for passive, 3-1 lead. Robby Smith would not be happy with this match. Caution+2 white paddled, and Mijain Lopez's replacement proves to be one of the best in the world with a bronze medal.

80kg Gold: 80kg Gold: Maksim MANUKYAN (ARM) vs. Radzik KULIYEU (BLR)

1st period - And we just had an explosion of points! A takedown into a gut wrench, and almost another turn. Manukyan is up 5-0 at the break.

2nd period - The Armenian crowd is LOUD. Chanting "MAK-SIM! MAK-SIM!" And one of the fans just threw the coach a flag for him to run around with.

80kg Bronze: Daniel ALEKSANDROV (BUL) vs. Elvin MURSALIYEV (AZE)

1st period - These two both beat 2x Olympic champ Roman Vlasov today. Mursaliyev goes on the board first after two passives. Aleksandrov returns the favor and takes the lead on criteria into the break after more passives.

2nd period - An offensive point! AZE got a stepout, and they win their first medal of the week.

80kg Bronze: Zurabi Datunashvili (GEO) vs Pascal Eisele (GER)

1st period - And we are getting right into the headbutts! Lot of whistle blowing and stoppages this match, Datunashvili trying to take ground. German fans getting back into it. 2-0 after our 4,000th passive today. Woah a headlock attempt! Right after GEO got called for passive. How many times can you hit wrestlers for passive? We might set a high score this match. HEADLOCK FOR A FALL! And the German crowd erupts as they win their third medal of the week. And we've got something new, tag team flag run with the coach holding one side and the wrestler holding the other.

66kg Gold: Hansu Ryu (KOR) vs Mateusz Bernatek (POL)

1st period - Passive against Korea as Poland tries a collar tie. Passive against Korea now. Ryu goes up 1-0 on a passive. Bernatek taking the lead on criteria after another passive. Ryu's legs are massive and he always stays low. Hopefully we get an offensive point this match. Not seeming likely.

2nd period - Back to the ref passive arm dance. Korea back on top 2-1. Ryu looking like he will continue his streak of winning the world championship the year after the Olympics.

66kg Bronze: Karen Aslanyan (ARM) vs Artem Surkov (RUS)

1st period - First passive offered and confirmed against Aslanyan. First passive offered and confirmed against Surkov. Surkov goes on the board first after a second passive against Aslanyan. Armenia tries a throw but nothing comes of it. Underhook now for Surkove and ref tells ARM head up. Passive confirmed against Aslanyan, 2-0 now all on passives.

2nd period - Slipped throw and ARM looks unhappy. High dive attempt by Aslanyan, turns into finger grab and an alleged eye poke. ARM finally gets on the board after a second passive, 2-1 now. We are on pace for no offensive points to be scored, but the crowd keeps getting louder. Yet another passive against Armenia. Aslanyan walks away in frustration every time the ref blows the whistle. Ref saying head up. ARM tries to rip the Russian's head off but top seed Surkov walks away with bronze. Russia finishes with 46 points and a team title.

66kg Bronze: Mohammad Elyasi (IRI) vs Atakan Yuksel (TUR)

1st period - Passive confirmed against Iran. Slip throw called back up. Iran taking the lead on another passive. Period ends 1-0. Pretty solid Iranian crowd once again.

2nd period - It's really not a contest, Iran has the best fans in the world. Turkey is leading now on a passive call, ref blew an action dead not sure why. These two are coming after each other now like two rams. Another passive against Iran now. Turkey scored his second unanswered point to go up 2-1. The Turk continues to stuff high dive attempts as Iran tries to shoulder through. The Turkish coach was given a yellow after jumping on the mat, but the match is over and Yuksel wins.

59kg Gold: 59kg Gold: Kenichiro FUMITA (JPN) vs. Mirambek AINAGULOV (KAZ)

1st period - Ainagulov taking a 1-0 lead two minutes after a couple passive warnings. These two previously met, with Fumita winning 2-1.

2nd period - Fumita up 2-1 now. Halfway through this period. Crowad starting to get into it now. They seem to sense a point coming. Ref stops for an attention, slip called. Fumita wins 2-1 and gives his coaches big hugs. He is Japan's first Greco champ since 1983.

59kg Bronze: Kanybek Zholchubekov (KGZ) vs Stepan Maryanyan (RUS)

1st period - Strange two for Maryanyan and the challenge brick is out right away. Arm spin attempt, no exposure, current call on the mat is two for correct throw. White paddled after review. Ref stopped a hold and Maryanyan was not happy about it, now passive called against him. Second passive and it's 1-0 now about 1:40 in. Maryanyan getting a takedown and a turn right away to make it 4-1 now. A passive being offered against blue, which the fans are clarmoring for, has been white paddled, 6-1 entering the break. The Russian coach seems to have much better towelwork.

2nd period - The fans continue to chant for passive calls, and one against KGZ was white paddled. The passive against Russia was confirmed, however. Maryanyan finishes off the tech with a big headlock, and Russia is up to 44 team points. They have already locked up the team title.

59kg Bronze: Seunghak Kim (KOR) vs Dmytro Tsymbaliuk (UKR)

1st period -UKR leads 1-0 on criteria, and now goes right into a throw, plus a Caution+2. Tsymbaliuk sucked him right into a throw. The score is 8-3 right now in favor of Korea.

Good morning from Paris! Today we will once again be providing live updates from the 2017 World Championships in Paris, France. Our competitors today for America are Ildar Hafizov (59kg), Ellis Coleman (66kg), Cheney Haight (80kg), and Robby Smith (130kg).

Going to start running through the quarterfinal results and semifinal pairings, as well as updating the team race. On the top half of 59kg, Kanybek Zholchubekov (KGZ) won over 3-2 Taleh Mammadov (AZE), setting up a semi against Kenichiro Fumita (JPN), who beat Stepan Maryanyan (RUS) 4-2. Down bottom, Seunghak Kim (KOR) took out Mehrdad Mardani (IRI) by a 12-6 score. Kim will wrestle Mirambek Ainagulov (KAZ), who won his quarterfinal 7-5 over Dmytro Tsymbaliuk (UKR). All four 59kg semifinalists represent Asian countries.

For the second year in a row, Japan will have a 59kg finalist as Kenichifro Fumita took a razor tight 2-1 win against Kanybek Zholchubekov (KGZ). In the finals, he'll see Mirambek Ainagulov (KAZ), who made the gold medal match by a 4-2 margin over Seunghak Kim (KOR). Kazakhstan is in the Top-10 teams right now.

Let's take a look at the 80kg quarters now. Maksim Manukyan (ARM) took out Pascal Eisele (GER) 3-0. The Armenian will take on Zurabi Datunashvili (GEO), who beat Michael Wagner (AUT) 3-2. On the bottom side, we saw Radzik Kuliyeu (BLR) sneak by Askhat Dilmukhamedov (KAZ) 2-1. He'll face 2014 world bronze Elvin Mursaliyev (AZE), a 2-0 winner over Zied Ait Ouagram (MAR). Mursaliev will decide if Roman Vlasov wrestles back or not.

In the semis, Maksim Manukyan (ARM) finished it off in style with a pin over Zurabi Datunashvili (GEO). He got a lot of time to watch the 3-3 win on criteria by Radzik Kuliyeu (BLR) over Elvin Mursaliyev (AZE). That means Roman Vlasov will not wrestle for a medal, just like in 2014 when Andy Bisek beat him. Armenia enters the Top-10 team scores.

Just complete our interview with Ellis Coleman, who has been eliminated from the competition. In the 66kg semis are Arterm Surkov (RUS), a winner by 9-0 tech over Mate Nemes (SRB). He will face Hansu Ryu (KOR), a 2013 world champ who beat Karen Aslanyan (ARM) 2-1. On the bottom side, Mateusz Bernatek (POL) took out Danijel Janecic (CRO) 2-1. Meanwhile, Mohammad Elyasi (IRI) won 4-1 over Denys Demyankov (UKR).

Jumping up to heavyweight, two Cubans made the semifinals, though one now represents Chile. Yasmani Acosta Fernandez (CHI) pinned Levan Arabuli (GEO) to keep Robby Smith alive for repechage. He will face 2x world champ Riza Kayaalp (TUR), a 3-1 winner over Kiryl Hryshchanka (BLR). On the bottom side, Oscar Pino Hinds (CUB) replaced Mijain Lopez and beat Eduard Popp (GER) 3-1. Pino Hinds will face past world champ Heiki Nabi (EST), who won 4-1 over Mykola Kuchmii (UKR).

First up for Team USA should be Hafizov of the U.S. Army WCAP. He will be facing Vazgen Khachatryan of Armenia. On the mat now though is three time world medalist Almat Kebispayev (KAZ) against 4x Pan Am champ Miguel Martinez Palacios. The Cuban is leading 2-0 in the second period now. Lithuania and Bulgaria putting up the most points right now, 4-3 on Mat A, the one furthest from press row. Kebispayev got a passive point and stepout and leads on criteria with 30 seconds left. After a late challenge on a throw, Kebispayev wins 5-2.

59kg - Ildar Hafizov vs Vazgen Khachatryan (ARM)

1st period: High dive attempt into an overhook for Ildar. Body lock does not work out and Hafizov gets put on his back for four. Another body lock attempt, but this Hafizov counters, no 4 though. Hafizov had him on his back, but blown dead now. They are discussing whether or not it should be a caution+2 against Armenia. Khachatryan gets taped up and we're back to action midway through the first. Good two-on-one drag attempt, but can't finish behind. Back on their feet and tie broken. Hafizov pushing away to reset an elbow tie. 30 seconds left and we've got a passive offered against Hafizov. Ref stopped it twice in a row on front headlock, and good lord we've got a caution+2 now. Hafizov tried to show he wasn't locking hands but still they said he went against the throat and choked. 6-2 at the break. Glenn Nieradka and Momir in the corner for Hafizov.

2nd period: Hafizov level changing, ref wants ARM to bring his head up. Two-on-one broken up by Hafizov, more calls of head up from the official. Passive confirmed against Armenia and Hafizov now trails 6-3. Back into an over under position, Khachatryan has it locked up. Another passive against Armenia in the final minute. Khachatryan has Ildar in the air and throw for two out of bounds, 8-3 now. High dive attempt fought off, 15 seconds left. Hafizov goes down and will need Armenia to make the finals now.

Back to our world action. Stepan Maryanyan (RUS) taking on Etienne Kinsinger (GER). The Russian leading 2-0 late in the first. Running through the 59kg round of 32 right now. World No. 3 Kenichiro Fumita will be Khachatryan's next opponent, we need the Armenian to beat the Asian champ. Maryanyan had Kinsiger up in the air, but a slip is called. North Korea just lost on Mat D, so now we won't see a North vs South Korea matchup. Maryanyan ekes by on criteria, he may see Khachatryan as they are both on the top side. The North Korean Chul was a past world champ.

Almost done here with the round of 32 at 59kg. Dominican Jancel Miguel Pimentel Gonzalez gets a win over Vasilev of Bulgaria, a 2013 junior world bronze. Roman Vlasov alert! Coming up soon on Mat B. BIG throw from Kessidis on a counter to an arm spin and the Swedish fans very loudly show their appreciation. Looks like the biggest match of 16 at 59kg will be top seed Andre-Stig Berge against World University champ Kanybek Zholchubekov (KGZ). 5x world silver Mark Madsen is up now on Mat A, and Michael Wagner of Austria is putting on a show for the fans over on Mat D! Madsen looking to finish it off goes over the top with a head pinch. What a comeback from Aleksandrov though! Holding criteria now 9-9 after being down 9-2. Down goes Madsen! Huge upset as the 6x medalist gets spiked on his head and turned and ends up losing.

80kg - Cheney Haight vs Laszlo Szabo (HUN)

1st period: Haight is taking on Szabo, last year's bronze medalist at both the European and World championships. Nice correct throw over the top from Haight! Double overs for 2, and now a slip halfway through the period. Slip now from HUN, and they just keep trading slipped throws. In the final minute now, the Hungarian keeps breaking ties and Cheney keeps pushing the pace. Somehow passive against USA though. Momir coaching Cheney up at the break, Herb House on towel duties and offering some good words of encouragement.

2nd period: Szabo fights off a drag and taking ground now as they're in a body lock, but Cheney breaks out. First point for Szabo on a passive call, but now what looks to be an obvious leg foul was not called. HUN lifts Cheney in the air, takes him to the mat for two and turned. Doesn't matter now as Szabo once again gets a takedown to a turn. Blown this one wide open, reeling off 9 unanswered with 30 seconds left. And Haight gets pinned.

Tough start to the Americans, but let's get caught up on the rest of the world action. Big one on Mat B, with Elvin Mursaliev up 2-2 on Vlasov on criteria. Mursaliev was 2014 world bronze down at 75, and won the Islamic Solidarity Games earlier this year at that weight. Passive confirmed and Vlasov takes the lead on criteria, but actually white paddled! Good lord, the champ just lost. Down goes Vlasov. 2x Olympic gold medalist loses in the first round.

130kg - Robby Smith vs Tamas Soos (SVK)

1st period: Slip right away. Insane size advantage for Robby here. Robby going underhook and forces a second passive to take the 1-0 lead. Double unders to a stepout and 2-0 now less than halfway through. BIG Body lock lat drop over for 4 AND THE FALL! America picks up its first win of the day.

Ellis Coleman is the next American up. The round of 16 is set for 80kg, and man did that bracket fall apart. American fans will be rooting against Ashkat Dilmukhamedov (KAZ) to keep Cheney's repechage hopes alive.

The Chliean from Cuba Yasmani ACOSTA FERNANDEZ just pinned Korea, and will be Robby's second round opponent. He beat Robby at the 2011 Pan Am championships. Top seed at 66kg Artem Surkov is on the mat now, and makes quick work of his opponent from France.

66kg - Ellis Coleman vs Diego RIBEIRO ROMANELLI (BRA)

1st period: Ellis with a takedown on the edge off a front headlock and leads 2-0. A stepout now trying to lock around the body to go up 3-0. Coleman is on a role now, stepout, then takedown and two more stepouts to finish it off. Coleman's pace was too much for that guy.

Switzerland spun all the way through on a side arch and only got a correct throw out of it. Round of 16 is set at heavyweight, and you can find brackets here. Ellis' potential next opponents are on Mat B, with Serbia up 2-1. Coleman will wrestle Mate Nemes in his second match. Unquestionably the best round of 16 match for 66kg will be Elmurat Tasmuradov (UZB) vs Artem Surkov (RUS), who will be the potential third round opponents for Coleman. Top seed at 59kg is up, Olympic bronze Stig-Andre Berge. Zholchubekov (KGZ) is beating him as 66kg round is wrapping up.

What a day for upsets. The 1 seed at 59kg just went down. Fumita vs Khachatryan is up, need Fumita to loses to keep Hafizov in. That's not good. Fumita drops Khachatryan on his head after a nice whipover on a lat drop. 4-0 now. Meanwhile, fantastic belly to belly for 5 by Mammadov (AZE) on the mat closest to us. Score stays that way at the break. And that'll do it, Hafizov is eliminated. Best match of the day so far is Mammadov vs Ciobanu, just taking turns launching each other. Going to grab an interview soon with Hafizov.

Pascal Eisele (GER) just sent the crowd into a frenzy by pinning top seed Aslan Atem (TUR). Robby Smith is coming up shortly, and the Round of 16 at 66kg is set. Big team race win there for Russia as 59kg Maryanyan sticks Torba of Hungary. Vlasov (80kg) and Schur (130kg) had previously lost; Russia walked in to the day with a 30-27 lead over Hungary.

Olympic silver medalist and 2x world champ Riza Kayaalp (TUR) is coming up on A. The boo birds are coming down hard for this Armenia vs Sweden match. The quarters are set at 59kg: EGY vs AZE and JPN vs RUS on the top half, KOR vs IRI and UKR vs KAZ on the bottom half.

130kg - Robby Smith vs Yasmani Acosta Fernandez (CHI)

1st period: The Chilean immediately overpowers Robby, but they call a straight arm push. Passive confirmed against Robby, first one. Smith doing a better job staying in the center, and we're on a restart. In relatively short order, CHI goes up 2-0 on a stepout and second passive call. It stays that score heading into the break.

2nd period: Acosta continues to move Robby around, back into the zone but he circles out. Our first passive against Chile now. Another stepout after Robby tried fighting in the zone for about 10 seconds. Also of note, Mark Madsen is out. And Robby's on the board after a passive call, 3-1 now. Last minute, takedown wins it. Robby picking up the pace now, but CHI fighting off his underhooks. Smith is knocked out of the championship side.

66kg Ellis Coleman (USA) vs Mate Nemes (SRB)

1st Period - Coleman will have a tough test, Nemes brother won a gold medal last night. Coleman surrenders the first 2 points and trails 2-0 half way through the first. At the break and it's still 2-0 based on that caution and two.

2nd period - Ref pointing at Ellis early on, hits him for passive and 3-0 now. Ellis clearly starting to pick up the pace, but now forced into the zone. Trying some high dives now but getting pushed back. And USA finally gets on the board after a passive, 3-1 now with Ellis working an overhook. That'll do it, all Americans have been eliminated from the championship round.
