2017 World Championships - Day One Recap
Recap for Greco-Roman's performance from day one of the 2017 World Championships in Paris, France.
Team USA's first day is complete and we will walk away without a gold medal. Three of our four wrestlers won a match, and one was pulled back into repechage.
Of note, nine different countries won medals on day one. Here are your team scores.
At 71kg, Pat Smith of the Minnesota Storm won his first match 5-0 over Matous Morbitzer of the Czech Republic. This put him into the Round of 16 against Nurgazi Asangulov (KGZ). Smith was leading 2-0 near the end of the first, when the 18th ranked Asangulov dug a deep underhook and then went for a headlock to go up 4-2 at the break. Another four pointer in the second period put the match out of reach; Asangulov lost his next match to the eventual finalist from Kazakhstan.

Mason Manville was our 75kg and like Smith was appearing in his first senior world championships. A 4-2 win over Manfred Edsberg (SWE) sent him to face Mindia Tsulukidze (GEO). In that match, Manville gave up several inches in height, but still got the only takedown of the match. Despite that, the refs repeatedly hit Manville with passivities for burying his head, despite Manville being much shorter than his opponent. A potential takedown was for naught, giving Edsberg the 4-2 win after a failed challenge, along with his three passive calls. Tsulukidze made it to the quarters before getting knocked out.

Although Ben Provisor was twice an Olympian, the 27-year-old had never appeared at a world championship. He only had one match, losing to Oleksandr Shyshman (UKR) in the final seconds. Provisor held a 2-2 criteria lead in the final minute, when he suffered what appeared to be a head injury due to repeated head butts from his opponent. The Wisconsin native began arguing with the chairman before a restart with 16 seconds remaining. The Ukrainian got to rear standing and hit a side arch for four to win 6-2. After the match, Provisor indicated he may be moving to Penn State to train with the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club.
After falling short of a medal in the Junior World Championships just a few weeks ago, G'Angelo Hancock got another crack here in Paris. He looked comfortable in a 3-0 win over Fatih Baskoy (TUR), before running into a buzzsaw. Reigning world and Olympic champ Artur Aleksanyan (ARM) took out Hancock 10-1, but made the finals for a fourth straight year to pull Hancock back in. Against this year's Asian champion Seyedmostafa Salehizadeh (IRI), Hancock led 1-0 early, but fell behind on two passive points and a stepout.
Tomorrow, we will see Ildar Hafizov of the NYAC wrestler at 59kg, as well as Ellis Coleman of the Army WCAP at 66kg. Our upperweights tomorrow are 80kg Cheney Haight of the NYAC and 130kg Robby Smith of the NYAC. Stay tuned for our live updates of the medal matches, as well as a bracket reaction once weigh-ins are over.
