It was a banner day for USA Wrestling's Junior men's freestyle team in Tampere, Finland, on Wednesday. After an undefeated morning session, all four athletes competing today will be going for world titles, and the U.S. leads the team race 66-63 over Russia.

Daton Fix worked his trap arm to perfection and rolled through the field. He did not give up a single point, teched all four of his opponents, and even dethroned the reigning world champion before the match even got to the second period. Fix demolished his semifinal opponent from Iran in just over 30 seconds, setting up our first head-to-head showdown with Russia.

Still a Cadet age-wise, Gable Steveson stepped up to the Junior level and is in his third straight world final. His back-and-forth semifinal with Russia turned into a tech, and gave the U.S. its lead in the standings.

In his third and final Junior Worlds appearance, Zahid Valencia has looked better than ever. He started off the day with revenge on his mind, bowling over the returning bronze medalist from Azerbaijan 11-2, the very same opponent who felled Valencia in last year's quarterfinals. After that, Valencia teched two opponents to set up another showdown with Russia in the finals. Artur Naifonov teched last year's 74kg world silver in the semis.

Since the U.S. Open in April, Ryan Deakin could have been considered the wild card of this squad. He left no doubt this morning, rallying from a 6-0 deficit in his quarterfinal against Mongolia and then balling up his Iranian semis foe with a second-period tech. Just like Fix and Valencia, Deakin's finals opponent is a Russian. The Northwestern freshman will square off with David Baev, the same Baev that beat world champ Magomed Kurbanaliev at Russian Nationals.

The United States is in position to win its first team title at Junior Worlds in men's freestyle since 1984. Heading into today, the U.S. and Russia were tied at 30. The difference right now is Steveson's above mentioned semifinal win over Russia. If any two Americans win their finals, the U.S. is guaranteed the team title. The maximum score Russia can achieve is 68 points, while Team USA can get as high as 70.
