Olympic champion Helen Maroulis struck gold at 58kg in the Poland Open. Maroulis dominated a quality bracket in this pre-Worlds warm up tournament.
Maroulis took on 2017's Asian and Yarigin champion, Aisuluu Tynbekova of Kyrgyzstan in the finals. After a tight first period, Helen blew the match wide open. A brutal sprawl and go-behind with 2 minutes left put an early end to the match. The takedown made it 9-0, but Maroulis' savage counter injured Tynybekova's shoulder, and no amount of cold spray could heal her in time to finish the bout.

Helen had to rally from an early 4 point deficit against 2016 junior bronze medalist Olena Kramzen of Ukraine in the quarterfinals. Helen would eventually win 10-4. Her snap down to a same-side ankle pick overhook dump early in the second period is a thing of beauty.

Helen only need a 94 second to tech fall Jowita Wrzesien of Poland in her opening bout in Warsaw. Maroulis hit a pair of nifty inside trips and then racked up exposures with leg laces and a bow and arrow against the outmatched Wrzesien.
