Projecting The 70kg Seeds In Paris
The 2017 world championships start in exactly two months, and we've already started to take a look at the seeds for some weights. This is the first year that United World Wrestling has instituted a system for separation points, and we have arrived at 70kg.

It is a rather simple process: points were awarded at the Olympics, world championships and various continental championships based on placement and the size of the bracket. The four people with the most points at each weight in Paris will be separated in their bracket.

Projected Seeds: 57kg | 61kg | 65kg | 74kg

For the third year in a row, James Green will be our representative at this weight. The four-time All American for Nebraska won a bronze medal in 2015 and is looking to get back on the podium this year. After winning the Pan Am championships in May, Green locked up the top seed for August.

Weight Rank Name Country Points
70kg 1 James Green USA 58
70kg 2 Mihail Sava MDA 51
70kg 3 Elaman Dogdurbek Uulu KGZ 43
70kg 3 Mostafa Hosseinkhani IRI 43
70kg 5 Zsombar Gulyas HUN 30
70kg 6 Frank Chamizo ITA 29
70kg 7 Magomedmurad Gadzhiev POL 27

Commentary: Green gives America the early lead in No. 1 seeds, joining the top seed at 61kg Logan Stieber. Behind the Titan Mercury star will be Mihail Sava (MDA), a 2014 world bronze medalist down at 65kg. He also has won a bronze and silver at University worlds to his name.

Elaman Dogdurbek Uulu (KGZ) has been one of his country's primary 70kg for several years. He has yet to win a major tournament, but does have bronze medals from the 2014 Asian Games, as well as last year's University world and non-Olympic weight world championships.

Tied with Dogdurbek is Mostafa Hosseinkhani (IRI), who beat Green 8-6 at the World Cup in February. We still do not know how ties will be broken, but it possible he and Green could end up on the same side. Iran's world team trials are July 5-7, so we will have a better idea of the seeding by then.

We still aren't sure who Hungary will send, since Zsombar Gulyas was sent to the world and European championships, but Nobert Lukacs won their nationals. As we have been doing with other weights, we wanted to include at least the top six since some countries can change their minds at the last second about who they are sending.

In the six and seven slots are two guys who will most definitely be "bad draws" if they don't get seeded: 2015 world champ Frank Chamizo (ITA) and three-time European finalist Magomedmurad Gadzhiev (POL).

Other notable unseeded guys would include Olympic gold medalist Soslan Ramonov (RUS), past world bronze Mandakhnaran Ganzorig (MGL), Yakup Gor (TUR), and Adam Batirov (BHR).

Projected 70kg Seeds

  1. James Green (USA), 58 points
  2. Mihail Sava (MDA), 51 points
  3. Mostafa Hosseinkhani (IRI), 43 points
  4. Elaman Dogdurbek Uulu (KGZ), 43 points
