Each spring, the top cadet and university aged wrestlers descend upon Akron, Ohio, for the UWW Cadet and University Nationals. This year's edition, which runs from Friday to Sunday, will be no different. All of this weekend's matches are streaming LIVE on FloWrestling, and all brackets are being posted on FloArena.
Over the years, we have seen some of the most talented wrestlers in the nation emerge at a young age in the cadet division. As we look back, we can see some of the matches that took place in the finals between wrestlers who have continued to grow and evolve into some of the best wrestlers in the nation.
Here are some of the most loaded Cadet Akron finals we have seen over the past few years:
Mark Hall and Bo Nickal both won NCAA titles this year for the team champion Penn State Nittany Lions, but they were not always teammates. Back in 2013, these two hammers met in the Akron finals and put up 14 points in an 8-6 win for Nickal.
Prior to their marathon match at Who's #1 in 2014, Nick Suriano and Daton Fix met in the finals at the Cadet Nationals in Akron. This match was not much different from their lengthy affair at WNO, except for the fact that it was only six minutes long. What was the same about the matches is that neither wrestler had much luck taking the other one down. While both wrestlers have great offense, they each have amazing defense as well. Fix wins this one on criteria by a final of 1-1.
In 2015, 54kg was the weight class to watch in Akron. Four hammers all entered the tournament, which got wrestling fans around the country excited to see how things would shake out. Cade Olivas, Austin Gomez, Daton Fix, and Spencer Lee are all studs, and to see all of them in the same bracket was a dream. In the end, it was Fix and Lee making it to the finals for a super match. Lee was the defending cadet world champion and the favorite, but Daton Fix had already burst onto the scene. It was a best-of-three series, and in both matches Lee was leading at the break, However, in both match one and match two (above), Fix came back in the second period and earned the victory.
Just one year ago, Vito Arujau and Sammy Sasso met in the Akron finals at 58kg. As two of the top young wrestlers in the country went toe-to-toe, Arujau proved to be too much for the younger Sasso. Later in the fall, Vito wrestled in the Cadet World Championships, where he claimed a silver medal. Arujau finished his high school career as a four-time New York state champion and is headed to Cornell. Sasso is ranked No. 6 on the class of 2018 Big Board. Arujau and Sasso currently sit as the No. 1- and No. 2-ranked wrestlers at 138, respectively.
Aaron Pico has most likely finished his wrestling career, as he is slated to make his MMA debut on June 24 at Madison Square Garden at Bellator 180. But as we know, when Pico was wrestling there were not many who could say they were better than the Whittier, CA, native. That included 2017 NCAA fifth-place finisher Tyler Berger from Nebraska. Back in 2013, the two young bucks met in the finals at Akron, where Pico came out on top. Later that summer, Pico would go on to win a cadet world title at 63kg.
