Pat Downey: More Than Just Trash Talk
Lately Pat Downey has been known more for his Twitter fingers and trash talk, but after the 2017 U.S. Open, Downey proved that he can back up what he says.

Unfortunately, we didn't get to see him finish the college season, during which he told two-time NCAA Champ Gabe Dean that he was going to beat him on the way to his own title. Ultimately, we had to wait for that matchup to happen at the Open, and when it did, it did not disappoint.

In a back and forth match, Downey did just what he said he would edging the two-time NCAA champion Dean, 7-6. The win set up a showdown with 2017 NCAA champ Bo Nickal who proved to be too much for Downey earning a tech fall in the first period

But Downey's run didn't stop there. In the fifth place match, Downey controlled Oklahoma State two-time All-American Kyle Crutchmer, 7-3

Overall, Downey's weekend included wins over 5 All-Americans (Vic Avery, Pete Renda, Josh Asper, Gabe Dean, Kyle Crutchmer) and a national champ (Gabe Dean) with his lone losses coming to David Taylor and Bo Nickal. Needless to say, Downey is more than just some trash talk and Twitter fingers, and will be one to watch come next month at World Team Trials live on FloWrestling.
