Did Rocky Lombardi Get A State Title Taken From Him?
Rocky Lombardi lost a controversial state finals match to Wyatt Wriedt
Live This Week On Flo: Feb. 24/25 - National Preps | Feb. 24/25 - NJCAA National Championships | Feb. 26 - National Collegiate Open
Was a state title stolen in Iowa on Saturday night? That's the question posed after the 3A state final at 220 pounds from Saturday night.
Rocky Lombardi of Valley High School out of West Des Moines was wrestling defending state champ Wyatt Wriedt in the finals. Lombardi handed Wriedt his only loss of the year a month ago at the Ed Winger Classic, and Wriedt gave Lombardi his only loss in December at the Keith Young Invitational.
The video below comes from the facebook of SoundOff Nation in Iowa. As you can see, Lombardi get hits with a very questionable stall call at the end of the match to send it in to overtime. Ask yourself, if that sprawl had come in the middle of the second period off a restart, would it be stalling?
Then there is the matter of the takedown call in sudden victory. At 1:07, we see Wriedt trying to cover. This may have been a takedown in college, but is there not reaction time in high school? Especially considering that Lombardi immediately turned out of it.
It certainly appears as though the official had his mind made up about the stalling call and the leniency of the takedown. It's quite a tough loss for Lombardi, who is ranked No. 7 at 220, just ahead of the 8th ranked Wriedt.
Of note, Lombardi is a 3 star Michigan State football recruit and will be playing quarterback. His highlight video is sick.
