Top 10 D1 NCAA Upsets Of The Week
I thought we may be due for this kind of a week.  It'd been all too calm of late, and that can only last so long.  The list could have been about 25 long this week if I wanted it to be.  I have pared it down to the 10 biggest stunners of the week.

10. Chace Eskam, ASU over #12 Riley Shaw, Cleveland State

Shaw isn’t a household name but he’s been a very, very tough heavyweight for over a year now.  Chace Eskam doesn’t have a ranked win in his career, but he does now!

9. Austin Eicher, NIU over #10 Zach Synon, Missouri

Eicher was an unknown to me coming into this weekend.  He has losses this year to Joe Wheeling, Cody Pae, John Erneste and Brance Simms. A year ago Synon was more hot and cold but had been more consistent this season.  This loss is a departure from that for the Mizzou 33 pounder.
Here's how it went down for Eicher:

8. #17 Connor Schram, Stanford over #7 Ronnie Bresser, Oregon State

All Pac 12 battle goes to Schram in their first meeting.  This puts Schram potentially in the driver’s seat for a Pac 12 title as these two are the class of the conference.

7. Sean Fausz, NC State over #9 Tim Lambert, Nebraska

NC State had to have this match to down Nebraska and Fausz came up huge. He hung around against a very solid Lambert and was able to get the monster upset when his team needed it most.

6. Matt Reed, Oklahoma over #6 Kyle Crutchmer, Oklahoma State

Sounded like a bizarre finish to this one.  I haven’t seen it, but here is what was relayed to me. Crutchmer and Reed were tied 2-2 late.  Crutchmer hurt his foot and screamed out an expletive and was hit for a penalty point late and Reed won 3-2 off of that penalty point.  Still a big time upset and a situation to keep your eye on at Oklahoma State.  Rogers also got the nod against Cornell later that weekend.

5. #20 Richie Lewis, Rutgers over #6 Brian Murphy, Michigan

Lewis had been knocking at the door for a big win and he got one here.  In a match where he was the clear aggressor against All American Brian Murphy, his persistence paid off late as he secured the winning takedown was time expired in the 3rd.

Here's Richie's match-winning TD:

4. #15 Jake Short, Minnesota over #3 Jason Tsirtsis, Northwestern

If I told you that Jason Tsirtsis was up 3-0 with 1:22 riding time with just over a minute to go in regulation, you aren’t feeling too good about your chances if you’re the opposition.  In fact that is as close to insurmountable a task as you’ll find.  Short got a quick go behind then a 4 point throw as time expired to knock off the NCAA Champion.

3. # 14 Zach Zavatsky, Virginia Tech over #2 Vic Avery, Edinboro

ZZ Top got it done from neutral against Avery.  Zavatsky has compiled a bevy of elite wins at this point and will be seeing a sizable bump in the rankings this week.  He controlled the entire match against Avery and took the match in OT 3-1.

2. #18 Dylan Palacio, Cornell over #5 Joe Smith, Oklahoma State

I debated on where to put this one for a bit.  Palacio was a top 10 guy starting the year.  But between his withdrawal from Cornell in the Fall, to his loss to Ken Theobold, I thought he may not be the same guy.  He looked excellent against Smith especially in his scrambles.  He had a key reversal against Jo Jo and some clutch counter takedowns as well.

1. #16 Nolan Boyd, Oklahoma State over #1 Gabe Dean, Cornell

Talk about persistence paying off.  Boyd gave up 2 counter TD’s off his own attacks, but he stayed on Dean the entire match and fired off multiple low singles and high crotches.  The turning point was when he scored a TD on the edge and transitioned to a tilt for 4 NF to go up 7-4.  Boyd never looked back.  He continued to attack and wound up a 14-9 winner over the undefeated NCAA Champion
