caldwell is just too long for metcalf. metcalf runs out of length on his shots when caldwell has lots of slack to sprawl out or scramble out . I wanted metcalf to win but dang caldwell really wrestled his match .

That was an excellent scramble. Metcalf was just too stiff, needs to stretch more. I also agree the ref needed to say "neutral" at least one more time for it to sink in.

Metcalf's "apology" was straight up making excuses. Im sorry, but "momentum carrying him," that is complete bullsmack. If you have watched the video, you can see Metcalf stop for a moment with about 2 seconds left with no intent to attempt to get a takedown. Then you will see him look at Caldwell and realize Caldwell is about to celebrate with a running backflip. When Metcalf notices this, he CHASES Caldwell down (with his face looking as if he were about to murder someone) and pushes/runs into him and is clearly on purpose. I think it was an extremely immature act and was well deserved of a penalty point. "Most/Some" of the Iowa team is extremely stuck up, selfish, and lack responsible sportsmanship manners in which even grade school wrestlers endure. It seems like the Iowa coaches' irresponsible actions throughout these past years have reflected on the Iowa wrestlers. Actually, I would not be suprised if Metcalf was Brands' long lost son.

By the way this is 100% my opinion and my perspective. I don't mind at all if you disagree. It wont hurt my feelings. Congrats to Caldwell. 2009 NCAA Champion.

In my opinion the diffrence in the match is when Metcalf was in on shots and couldn't finish. This lead to Caldwell scoring 4 extra points. I love metcalf he is my favorite wrestler but Thumbs up to Caldwell for believing in himself and in his performace. The shuv is controversial at first I was like why did he have to be a jerk like that after losing, but once I watched the match over agian there was still time on the clock and it was just an agressive move. My congrats go to both wrestlers for having what it takes to go out on that platform and gut it out with each other.

I think the back flip is great!! this sport needs some excitement and energy and celebration. Every other sport in the world can celebrate when something big happens and noone complains. And on a side note, caldwell handled the fact that metcalf ran into him while doing the back flip pretty good. He could have been ticked off and he could have landed on his head and been injured. How many people could even do a flip like that anyway? What an athlete!!

It does not matter that metcalf is abetter wrestler. He proved it by easily getting in position on the last two takedowns which caldwell took a way. Both times you could tell caldwell wanted it. You could tell caldwell was motivated, metcalf did not follow through on what should of been two easy takedowns for him. Metcalf lost something from last year. Can he get it back?

what was the score of the match before he got pinned?.. if im not mistaken metcalf was winning. how many great wrestlers are cought on their backs when they are winning by people who are not nearly as good as the other guy?. take kellen russell for example PINNED IN A TILT! he beat that kid like three times this year. he got cought, but in no way is the guy who pinned him a better wrestler. he got lucky!. just like caldwell pinning metcalf the first time. but then to tech someone.. that is one wrestler domniating the other wrestler so badly that the ref needs to end the match, and thats what metcalf did. just a shame he didnt do it when it counted.

Great match Caldwell! Filthy scrambles! As an unattached fan reading these comments... Anonymous Coward needs to learn how to spell and also realize that his comments were the racist ones. The Caldwell flip and Metcalf push worked itself out and both wrestlers have publicly acknowledged the wrong. Moving on, the wrestling fans that watched the entire match and then went home and watched it again, felt something amiss. He has true back spasms you say, then how come when he first calls for his timeout, his coach slaps his back and tells him to get back out there. Then he proceeds to come back and throw up in the biohazard can? Bottom line, I hope Caldwell doesn't redshirt because we want to see the rematch next year. Word.

-Metcalf got beat... convincingly.
-How many Titles were won with a lung break included, this aint the 1st...
-Metcalf teched Caldwell at the All-Star, who cares...
-Caldwell caught Metcalf in a Spladle and pinned him last year, get over it...
-Caldwell begins to celebrate with a second on the clock, here is where intelligence is required, Smart people realize Caldwell won and is excited so they understand his celebration. Dumb people see it as Metcalf still wrestling because there is 1 second on the clock. Decide on your own...

Summary: You dont have to wrestle like Metcalf to win titles. You dont have to go to Iowa to win titles. You dont have to be someones puppet to win titles.

It seems kinda odd that Caldwell who with a minute or so to go in the third period would get back spasms. Then 45 seconds later is totally recovered to do a PRE Celebratory back flip. Im all for celebrating a match that big, but in wrestling culture, you do it after you shake your oppenents hand. Lets keep in mind the match wasnt over when Caldwell was running around like a little girl. Metcalf reacted the way most of us would of in that situation. He gave him a little shove but not enough to really hurt the guy. I thought the team point should have been taken away from north carolina not iowa in that situation. You have to be able to win right and in this case Caldwell displayed the type of sportmanship you see in the NFL these days.

Metcalf was ABSOLUTELY pinned when he got spladdled and if you think other wise then you need to go to the rule book and learn what a pin entails. In the all star match it didnt count for anything but bragging rights and Caldwell entered late because jenkins backed out so Caldwell clearly wasnt ready for that match and didnt really seem to care. Caldwell wins when it actually counts something Metcalf cant do when facing Caldwell. Metcalf is one of the most dominate wrestlers now but his cryptonite is Caldwell he just cant seem to figure out how to beat his style. Face the facts in 2008-2009 Metcalf is 2nd best.

a great match... caldwell and metcalf are the classic example of a styles clash... in all three matches, the one who was able to assert their style in the match has been the victor... metcalf is the more basic and fundamentally sound wrestler who uses pressure to overwhelm his opponent... caldwell is the quick and athletic type who can improvise quite well... in the match that metcalf won, he totally negated caldwell's scrambling ability... that wasn't the case in the finals... caldwell scored 2 takedowns because of his superior scrambling ability.... best match of the night... congrats to both, and both will more than likely be back.... the one who asserts their style will win the next one as well!

The styles Cadwell and Metcalf complament each other well. Also, Caldwell is not intimidated by Metcalf like many wrestlers are simply because of their past. He took it to him right off the bat and caught Metcalf a little off-guard with the first take down. That and the constant elbow pass attempts and of course the "funk" through Metcalf off. Caldwell wrestled a very good match and kept Metcalf from getting in a rythm. Both are outstading wrestlers and clearly dominate their weight-class.

Logic   March 23 at 12:13pm
There is no doubt that Caldwell won this last match fair and square, but anyone who can watch their first match and tell me it wasn't a bogus call is a moron. Metcalf got caught, but he wasn't pinned in that match, no matter how badly you want that to be true. And the All Star match may not have counted, but still pretty damn embarrassing - and not a fluke - to get tech'd. I've never seen somebody get caught in a tech like people get caught in pins.

So, by no means is either of these wrestlers extremely better than the other. To me, they're both great and very closely matched. The first match was a bad call, Metcalf dominated in the 2nd whether it counts or not, and Darrion won the 3rd handily. That's not exactly decisive evidence either way.

You need them. It is (extremely) unlikely that Metcalf and Caldwell will wrestle 20 times in college, but if they did and Metcalf won 18 of those (which would still be possible), some would say that would be winning 9/10 times. You see, 18/20 and 9/10 are the same.

FORGET ALL THE BULL. Caldwell hit 2 beautiful offensive takedowns in the first and counter offensive takedowns later on in the match. he controlled all positions and rode the crap outta metcalf. you are trying to ignore that by talkin bout the final and who was the bad guy. THE IMPORTANT THING IS... he straight up dominated metcalf. He is the better wrestler. hes won more than hes lost and he didnt squeak out a lucky one.. he beat him. i know its hard for you to recognize that cause metcalf is damn good and you love him so much. but im sorry.. it is what it is... caldwell embaressed him out their. he headlocked him in national finals.

though i do like both a favor brent a bit more. caldwell won that what happened but what he did at the end wasnt right and to deduct a team point wasnt fair to do.....congrats to caldwell hopefully we'll see such an exciting match more often

How many times have they wrestled in college? I am talking matches that count toward there records? I thought it was only 2. And I know of a 3rd at an early season tournament?

I do not care about any HS or all-star events. Just matches that count on the record.

no the better man did not win. the better man had a bad bad match. its just a shame that he had to have is only bad match in the ncaa finals. i have to admit cladwell did out tough him in some positions and deserved to win that specific match, metcalf would win 9 outa 10 times.
NO, Metcalf wins 1 outa 3 times.

I love Metcalf but how can anyone say he is better than Caldwell?

He is 2-1 against Metcalf and went undefeated this year. He is 2-0 against Metcalf in matches that are counted by the NCAA.
Caldwell is the man. Metcalf is the second best guy at 149. There is no doubt now.

bull he was in the midst of his backflip when the buzzer went off metcalf had the right to do what he did. this is wrestling not a circus. if you are going to beat someone as amazing as brent metcalf then at least do it with some pride.

Bad ESPN Commentator   March 23 at 9:11am
Listen to the ESPN commentator at the end of the match. He clearly wanted Metcalf to win and was upset when he lost. I giggled. Good job Caldwell.

HUH??   March 23 at 7:20am
These Metcalf fans are ridiculous. Ok, Caldwell started to run around with about 3 seconds left and didn't start to flip until after the buzzer and whistle. So Caldwell was in complete control for about 6:57 and all of Metcalf's fans want to talk about the last 3 seconds. No matter what, that wasn't enough time to comeback. Caldwell won fair and square, congrats.

Flo Commentary   March 23 at 5:39am
I agree, I would have enjoyed and rather heard Martin yelling, "What! What! What! when Caldwell won his match. Flowrestling has helped me reconnect with the sport, after having taken some time away after finishing my college career. Great work guys!

I'd have preferred Flo comentary. Caldwell threw it all out there and props to him for making it happen, but more than that, thanks to you all at flow for making it happen. Your coverage was just awesome!
