metcalf will win if they meet again. caldwell beat him once and cought him on his back once. when metcalf physically dominated him winning by tech. if you people forget a tech is beating someone so bad that you need to end the match early and caldwell could NEVER do that to metcalf. everyone knows it and people that dont agree are just metcalf haters.

of course you want to be at your best in the ncaa finals but metcalf clearly wasn't at his best and that's why he didn't win. in addition, when he was pinned against caldwell last year it was very questionable and its safe to say that if he survived that period, metcalf had a very very good chance of winning. i believe metcalf would beat caldwell 6-7 out of 10 times

When is it most important to be at your best? Hmmm...........How bout the NCAA Finals. It is what it is. If Metcalf ever wanted to win a match I am sure it would be the finals of the NCAA Championships you do not get to the finals by luck Caldwell has Metcalf's number just as much as Metcalf has his. He Metcalf whooped up on Caldwell in a match that did not even count on there records. And in the NCAA finals, when it did count, well he just simply got out wrestled on the biggest stage. It shows that their is a butt whooping for everybody.

People need to get off this "act like you have bean there before" stuff. The truth is he had not bean there before, and he may never be there again. Ask Danaho and Escibido at 125, ask Pacillo, ask Gillespe, ask Metcalf, ask Leen, all champs who fell short this year, or how bout poeta, twice runner up. There are only 10 guys who do this a year, and usually 1 or 2 are doing it again (Jaggers, Herbert) so yes he has every right to celibrate the greatest moment of his life. What his matches on here and youtube, he wins, and Loses with class. He was excited for this win because it is what every wrestler dreams about from day 1. Congradulations your an NCAA champ and will be forever.

Metcalf better take his own advise and take adavantage of the "room for improvement" in his wrestling because at his current "skill level" he is not going to be qualifying for let alone winning any Olympic matches. His "conditioning level" is pretty good, his intensity is good, but Darrion showed Brent what really matters most, and thats "Strategy and Technique"... just ask the Russians.

I am so happy D.C. beat metcalf. Metcalf is a terrible example for young athletes; he shoves his opponents after the whistle, he obviously can't take a loss well at all, and he struts around the match like some kind of grace from god. Losing in the NCAA finals to someone he teched earlier in the year should take him down a peg or two. Thank you Darrion

Its not that people are bagging on Metcalf, its the fact that the announcers and fans that never seen Caldwell wrestle counted Metcalf as winning the national title before they even stepped on the mat... They took his semi-final match off live as if Metcalf was God's gift of wrestling... He had trouble beating Lance Palmer who Darrion pinned in 56 seconds at the Las Vegas Invitational this past year... Even Metcalf counted himself as having the national title before they wrestled. So he deserves to get bagged on...

Caldwell wrestled a great match and took Metcalf out of his game from the first period. But wrestling has always been a man's sport and what he did at the end was not something a real man does. Just like Illinois Wrestler said, you win with class, you lose with class. I see nothing wrong with what Metcalf did, he was stading up for himself, the Hawkeyes and the sport of wrestling. You need to learn that when you win, act like you've been there before. i am a HS coach and would never want my kids to act that way, I would be embarassed and I would pull them off the mat immediately. They forget that young wrestlers aspire to be NCAA champs, and they watch to see how they should act. That just isn't the way.

How could coach Brands in his ESPN interview refuse to mention Caldwell by name and refuse to give him a well deserved congratulations. Instead he merely called him an opponent who Metcalf "owned". Perhaps Metcalf "owned" him in the all-star match, but Caldwell has pinned metcalf, has taken him down in the first 12 seconds of an NCAA championship Finals Match and again with a "HEAD-LOCK'..........Metcalf hardly owns his "opponent"-Caldwell.

Both are outstanding wrestlers and neither one owns the other....they are both dangerous threats to each other on the mat. This day belonged to Caldwell...Well Done!!!

I'm an Iowa fan. Born and raised a Hawkeye. It's ironic, but I'm also a Darrion Caldwell fan. I became a fan of his a few years ago when I noticed just how much raw physical talent this young man has. He's just a gutsy freakin' wrestler! How can a wrestling fan not root for a guy who goes into matches to WIN and PIN?! Even against tremendous, top-notch opponents like Metcalf! He manages to out there everytime and take risks, such as the head and arm we saw there in the finals. He deserves all the respect he gets, because he's great for the sport. I also found him to be quite gracious after previous defeats. Metcalf however, coudn't even manage to give credit to this phenominal wrestler who has now beaten him twice. I hate when my Hawkeye wrestlers lose badly. I have also become more and more agitated by IPTV's Johnson and his Metcalf/Iowa bias. I've called radio play-by-play, and I can tell you that this is just unacceptable. It's a national broadcast. If you can't call the action without cheering on Metcalf (as you did BADLY during the Metcalf All-Star Meet win) the whole time, and then practically bawling on-air when he loses, then just hand the headset to someone who can handle broadcasting on a national stage. Ugh, it's annoying and I'M FROM IOWA!

"I shoot, I score. You shoot, I score." That's the story of the match right there. Metcalf got beat on the Caldwell's opening low shot. Then Caldwell threw him on his back with a headlock a third grader would have seen coming. Then Caldwell either scored on or neutralized every shot Metcalf took from the second period on. To all of you who think Metcalf got screwed or time was on the clock when Metcalf hit him, get on YouTube and watch the replay. You'll see reality staring you right in the face.

I was a Ohio State fan sitting next to a large group of Iowa fans. Iowa knows how to win but doesn't know how to take a loss or show respect to other schools athletes. They were booing Humphrey, Jaggers and Pucillo when they were on the podium. It is one thing to cheer for your team but that is just disrespectful and unsportsmanlike. Brands was reprimanded at least once during the tourney for jawing at a coach after a match and had to be restrained by Zadwick. This is not the kind of example a coach should set for wrestlers, fans or anyone. Sure I wanted OSU to win but cheered for ALL the athletes when they were on the podium because they deserved to be there.

Metcalf will have to start becoming a more technical wrestler or others will begin to beat him, too. Metcalf is good, but he relies too much on conditioning and brawling. The real greats (Saitiev, Smith, etc) are generally not the biggest brawlers, but the more calculating technicians. Metcalf's behavior at the end was deplorable and very dangerous. There's no room in the sport for such sorry losers. If wants to be competitive internationally, he's got a lot of work ahead.

For everyone that keeps saying there was time on the clock, LOOK AT THE REPLAY. And as far as the backflip, just about every state champion we had this year did one, and not one person in the gym said anything about it being an embarrassment to the sport. Some of you clowns need to accomplish somehthing in your lives then see how you act. Most of you couch potatoes scream and holler when your nfl team wins a game. He just won an individual National Championship, over what some thought was an unbeatable opponent. He should still be on the mat celebrating. And as for that commentator last night, get off Iowa's payroll.

Metcalf is just a sore loser. That's it. If you watch the end of the match, before Caldwell does anything, metcalf starts standing up, relaxes and only starts coming at caldwell once he starts celebrating. Thug move. As far as should Caldwell have celebrated like that, I can't say. He reached his goal. Let him celebrate if he wants.

I totally agree with you. Before this finals match i was a metcalf fan, he worked hard and all but Caldwell is a STUD! The headthrow was nice, and he just kept racking points because he wanted it more than Metcalf. you cant really say metcalf is a sore loser i mean these people train for so long and prepare so long that there is so much emotion when someone wins or loses especially since there was that much pressure on metcalf to repeat. Caldwell did what no one else has done this year and gave no respect to metcalf and just flat out took it too him and metcalf wasnt ready for that. I mean he shouldnt have shoved him but as a wrestler he had to of been terribly upset and frustrated and he did get kneed in the face. but again great job by Caldwell he shocked the world

I should leave that question for a different thread. Really has nothing to do with this match. Now Metcalf needs to be the motivated wrestler. If Caldwell takes it to him again, then history will reflect the Metcalf dominance differently. Somewhat similar to what happened to Dustin Schlatter after he took 149 as a true freshman - then lost to Gillespie the following year and finished 7th last year (injuries played a big part in that) I don't think Metcalf could have beaten Schlatter if he had wrestled as a true freshman. Just an opinion and we'll never know. Time will tell how this turns out for both wrestlers.

The refs had nothing to do with the outcome of this match - but they did impact several other matches - particularly in the consolations. I couldn't hear any of the audio where I was at, but the Donohoe-Nickerson match was puzzling. I kept being interrupted during that match so I'm not sure what happened in OT. Was a stalling point awarded to Nickerson with 3 seconds left before he rode Donohoe out for the win?

Im sorry to say you cannot defend either of their actions. They both did unthinkable things on the mat. Wrestling is supposed to be a sport of control and pride. Caldwell turned his back on Met calf with regulation time left on the clock and celebrated. That of Caldwell was wrong but Metcalf did no better by shoving him like that. Both of their actions show a lack of control in a sport based mainly about discipline and control. I will say Caldwell wrestled a good match and Metcalf let him get in his head but overall a very poor showing of sportsmanship on BOTH of their parts.
-As to the comment that someone does a backflip every time, no one should ever do it while there is time left no matter what the score is. It is disrespectful and horrible

Unbelievable match by Caldwell. I think most of the wrestling world is in shock. A lot of people on here are saying that Caldwell didn't respect Metcalf. I think Darrion respects him but he was not scared of him, which I think almost all of Brent's opponents fear him a little. Man, he went after him on the first whistle. Hit that first shuck as soon as Metcalf touched his neck and then fired in on a low single and scored two. I think he really believed he could beat him! I think Metcalf will learn from this and continue on to be a great wrestler in college and after. Don't know if Darrion will be him again or not, but at least for one match he was better. Really proves that anyone is beatable on a given day. As far as the backflip, there have been backflips before from national champions. This just happened to be such a high profile match. I'm not going to get too worked up about the backflip or Brent pushing him. I just know that 20 years from now I will be able to tell people that I watched that match live. I had Caldwell picked for the finals, but I didn't think he could win it. I also thought that Tim Johnson shouldn't be so slanted towards Iowa over 2 days of broadcasting. I thought it really got bad during the finals. He really needs to be a professional and I would think ESPN might have a talk with him. He didn't hardly say a word for the next two matches after Metcalf's match. If he can't get his bias out of the way he needs to just stick with broadcasting Iowa's duals.

in response to several of the posts regarding the post-match shove, caldwell's flip, and the time on the clock:

watched a replay of the end of the match. 5 seconds left at restart. metclaf cuts caldwell pursues for a few seconds then raises out of stance and seems to concede defeat. it is only after metcalf raises out of his stance, now only walking in caldwell's direction, that caldwell began his celebration. with 3 seconds left caldwell raises his hands in the air--metcalf does nothing to attempt a takedown. at 2 seconds caldwell begins his run to his backflip. it is only then that metcalf chased caldwell. and after numberous blaring whistles and 0 seconds on the clock does metcalf shove caldwell off the mat mid flip.

It was an exciting match…I have no clue what the clock was like when the push happened but the match was over..the flip put the explanation point on it and I love seeing people happy when they win.

As for this match being the upset of the decade…..No way. There will be many more wrestlers that dominate like Metcalf does and eventually fall.
The loss of the decade goes to Alexander Karelin

What happend to him he was hit for unsportsmanlike and had his title taken. There is no circumstance where a person should show boat like that on the mat. Doesnt Matter   March 21 at 9:44pm
It REALLY doesnt matter whether he was faking the injury or not. He didnt beat Metcalf. He dominated him. And this is coming from a kid who Metcalf was ( and still is) his favorite wrestler. I've never seen someone who Brent couldnt major, tech,or get the fall from and after i saw the first takedown, i was shocked. Then I saw the head and arm, and I was SHOCKED. LIke, seriously, throwing a head and arm in a finals match is just like looking someone in the face and saying " You're not on my level."

Darrion came out there, wrestled hard in the first two periods, KNOWING he couldnt have a close match with metcalf in the third because metcalf is a frikkin MACHINE. So he took it to him in the first two periods.
So what if he took a breather ( which he did have real back problems...and also alot of wrestlers do the same), he was beating metcalf by like five or six at the time. The match was pretty much over going into third. Metcalf was broken down mentally, such a shame.
CONGRATULATIONS DARRION COLLIER ON YOUR TERRIFIC WIN !!!!!!!!

Great game plan, great execution. Metcalf will remember that match for the rest of his life. Great job, DC. Way to believe in yourself and stick with your game plan. Before this match, I thought the only way to beat Metcalf was to pin him in the first period. DC just showed everyone another way. I hope they meet up in the finals again next year.

WORST MATCH OF TOURNAMENT! THIS WHOLE TOURNAMENT WAS DECIDED BY THE REFS. EVERY MATCH EXCEPT GOMEZ, JAGGERS, HERBERT AND VARNER. NOW YOU CAN JUST STALL YOUR WAY TO VICTORY. POOR ANDREW HOWE WRESTLED HIS HEART OUT AND GOT ROBBED BY THE REFS. CALDWELL HAS NOTHING ON METCALF.
The refs had nothing to do with the outcome of this match. Caldwell was dominant in nearly every position. It seemed that Metcalf could never get on track. I do agree Howe forced several stalling calls though...he was screwed.

BTW, Caldwell has 2 wins on Metcalf.

Caldwell did what noone else has done, he went at Metcalf with no respect and was able to keep going at him hard the whole match.
Congrats Darrion, everything I've ever seen of you you seem like a great person and a exciting wrestler.

BUBBA JENKINS BACKED OUT AT THE LAST MINUTE. WHERES HIS 09 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP? WHO BEAT HIM THE ONLY 2 TIMES HES LOST IN COLLEGE?

dc did what he had to to win. if that means being a little dirty then go for it. it obviously worked!! DC is the man. you cant blame him for celebrating like that. he just wrestled an amazing match and pulled out one of the biggest upsets in a LONG time. you cant blame metcalf for pushing him either because lets be honest. in the heat of a moment like that im sure a lot of you guys would have shoved him to. congrats dc. thyere gonna battle next year

Calwell whipped him! The was no questions about that win. He won all three periods. Any wrestler here that slightly hurt himself in that situation would have taken injury time. It is well within the rules. Don't hate a guy because he can do a backflip and you can't!!! Match of the year and the best wrestler tonight won!

for all of you who claim darrion was faking a back injury, you can watch on this site him take an injury default loss for a back injury against the kid from oklahoma 2 weeks ago. STOP HATING and give the man his just do. the match was over by then anyway. and did i see someone say something about
penalty points? DUH... he won by 5. are you suggesting 6 penalty points. excessive celebration, maybe but he pulled off supposedly one of the biggest upsets in history. he also did a back flip when he won the states. YEAH JERSEY calwell and burroughs. CONGRATS

i agree 200% with you Nick Watson, but c'mon do we really need to do a backflip with 5 secs still on the clock, Thats unsportsmanlike conduct. i am a fan of metcalf but after that backflip i really don't like Caldwell he could of been a little less of a showoff. He deserved to win it now doubt about it but i dont think he should of done that.

oh and when Caldwell took injury time the match was already won, Metcalf was too far down to possibly come back, he would have had to pin Caldwell which would not have happened. Give the man his props and move on, they'll both be back next year so you'll have to wait till then

you say that you should just be glad for those who win regardless of whether or not they are from Iowa yet early you stated that you thought Caldwell was cheap by taking injury time then doing a back flip after beating last year's OVERALL WRESTLER of the year. I know i can't do a backflip but i'd sure as hell try even if i had back spasms if i beat Metcalf

Yes, an upset. Iowan's live for wrestling and concentrate so hard on wrestling, which is why they have had so many national championships. Other teams that haven't had as many are not any less of a person, they just excel at other things. why does there have to be so much drama and competiton? Why can't we just appreciate those that do so good and not take it so offensively??

Caldwell wrestled a great match against Metcalf. Styles do make fights. However I found it very distasteful when Darrion repeatedly stuck his fingers in Metcalfs face. I also thought that Darrion had "back spasms" yet it didn't seem to hurt him in his victory flip.

the injury timeout was taken with both men on their feet nobody had an advantage near the out of bounds, so Darrion in no way cheated there was no loss of control for metcalf or anything of the sort they started back exactly where they left off before the injury timeout. Sure caldwell started to celebrate early but who wouldn't in that situation, completely classless of Metcalf to shove him after the time had expired and the whistle blew

I would LOVE to see a formal review of this match!! Not to say Caldwell didn't wrestle well he did, but if he was that good, he wouldn't have needed to do a bogus injury timeout, (in which the clock didn't stop like it should have) and then do a backflip off the mat with the clock still running. To me, that is more than unsportsmanship like conduct and should have been disqualification or at least a penalty of points, not celebrate!!!!! If Iowa had done this, how would you feel??? Total unsportsmanlike conduct and there should be rules for this for both sides!!!!

This is the first time I've seen someone go push for push with Metcalf. It's also the first time I've seen someone literally FEARLESS of Metcalf. I don't think Darrion respected Metcalf's wrestling and while it made him over-aggressive, for some crazy reason it WORKED. A head and arm? For sure Metcalf was not expecting the pace of Caldwell. You can tell Caldwell worked on that elbow pass over and over and the defense to Metcalf's short game.

As for Metcalf's conditioning, I'm sure 50% of that was him mentally breaking. You can be considered the best in the world but if you can't fight in the face of adversity, you're never a true warrior.
