I saw him wrestle in states last year, def the best one out there, toyed around with the kid in the finals and leg craddled him. He is one of the best I have seen in FL, I havent seen a HS wrestler with that kind of balance and skill. I would agree that brandon has some of the best practice partners on one team, to say they are the best in the nation is by no means overstating it. To compete at high levels you have to practice with the best every day, and at brandon you can do that. Look forward to seeing how he does in the ncaa.

He is a year older than a large percentage of the kids in his grade...so what?

That means last year when he was undefeated that most of the wrestlers were his age or younger with a few being older.
That means that when he won a college open up a weight class from his normal weight that he was the same age as some of the wrestlers in his bracket, but younger than most.
That means that every USA age title that he has ever won, he was within the age requirements and had no advantage.
That means that he wrestled in Sr level events such as the olympic trials as one of the youngest wrestlers in the tournament.
He has wrestled older and younger wrestlers. I could see the argument if he constantly wrestled younger, however he continues to wrestle up to get competition. Grajales takes on all comers young and old...and he wins almost all of them. If he can make 133 next season, he will be in the mix for a national title.

Wait..What?   January 14 at 5:42am
I would like to start off by saying that if Grajales wrestled anyone good ever he would get humbled, especially if they are from good wrestling states. His results from Fargo should obviously be disregarded, because lets face it, no good athletes train over the summer. So that should also negate his performance at Senior Nationals (which also shouldnt count because Eric was probably ATLEAST one year younger than all his opponents, and god knows that unless two people are born on the exact same day they can't be given any recognition for winning.) Yes, maybe Eric has beaten ranked kids in the past, or even very recent past, but lets face it, the only reason he wins is because he doesn't you real moves and he always gets lucky and somehow wins despite his OBVIOUS lack of conditioning. Heck the only reason the kids he beat are even ranked is because THEY somehow managed to catch a kid who was ranked in the JV states from Minnesota (except for Alton and Kindig because I beleive they both actually won JV states last year in Penn but I could be wrong.) I really feel sorry for UM and their recruiting class next year, maybe they should stop just picking random kids to give full rides to and start looking more at people that have accomplished something credible in the past (and when I say credible I mean it must be something that is actually impressive, not just winning some "national" tournament a few times or going undefeated in high school). May god take pity on Eric Grajales soul, not everyone was born with natural abilities.

Willie   January 14 at 12:08am
For the love of God....are we still talking about age? I believe Eric often wrestled higher age brackets when possible at USA tournaments when he was younger.....he wrestled a college tournament this year....he wrestled in the Olympic trials. He travels to tournaments across the country year round, most of which use age groups, not grades, and he still wins.

I'm sure you guys have an illogical argument for everything...well the college guys weren't elite multi-time NCAA champs, well the kids in his age bracket at USA tournaments weren't very good, it was a weak weight class, the elite wrestlers that he beat were sick/cut too much weight/don't care about off season match results. Can you think of any other good excuses? I know you have them lined up and I would like to hear them.
I'm curious what it is you expect from this guy. Ridiculous I tell you.

Jason,

Florida allows 8th graders on varsity. Therefore, quite possible for him to wrestle a 13 yo.
I agree there seems to be a trend to holding kids back for athletic puposes esp at particular HS such as Brandon. Neverless, it is a huge advantage to be 2 years older at the HS level. When Eric WAS wrestling kids his own age he was not 135 he was 112 and below.
reply

Anonymous Coward   January 13 at 6:32pm
Gregg, You are correct. He doesn't wrestle younger kids. I am sure that most of the 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th graders are 20+. And when he won states as a 16 year old junior I mean freshman at 103lbs I am sure he was the youngest kid there. When you are a 17year old soph you are not going to see that many kids at 112lbs that are older than you. 2008 fargo he beat Ellis Coleman in the finals who is nearly 2 years younger. Most kids his age have been wrestling college kids the past few years.
reply

Gregg   January 13 at 5:45pm
i dont know what you dumbasses are saying. he's not wrestling kids younger then him at all. maybe juniors and sopres but not 8th graders and that. hes weighs 135. and if you dont remember, he managed to win states when he was a freshman and sopre and junior. and if your gonna say that it's because florida isn't that great of a wrestling area, he wrestles at nationals and other tournaments every year and does incredible.

Jason Bryant   January 13 at 5:36pm
I'm pointing out that "SIX" years is an extreme. How many states have 8th graders on varsity? New York, Minnesota, how many more? How many 8th graders are wrestling varsity at 135 pounds?

There is a difference, but then again, isn't the "average" HS senior nowadays drifting more towards 18 than it is 17 anyway? I was 17, but most of my class as 18 and some 19. Especially with athletes, it seems they (ALL) are older than traditional non-athletes.
For every 17-year-old senior Grajales wrestles, there's three 18-19 year olds he'll wrestle.

Jason, 6 years would be the age difference between an 8th grader varsity, which is fairly common, and an 19 yo senior. The physical difference between a normal 17 yo senior and a 19 yo senior is significant. You cannot say that him being 19 is not an advantage.

Jason Bryant   January 13 at 4:08pm
I've heard it all now ... SIX years? Jeez people. The kid is 19. How many 13-year-old high school freshman are on the varsity wrestling team?

How about judging his success compared to people close enough to wrestle him in age in high school (17-18-19) and stop throwing out absurd things like (SIX) years older.
That's crap. Eric's a good kid.
reply

I saw him last weekend at the Cheesehead. Let me tell you - this kid is very talented. We saw him literally run takedown clinics on a few of the best wrestlers in the state. We all had our doubts about Eric before we actuallysaw him wrestle, but no more. He's the real deal and deserves the rankings, etc., that he gets.

Brandon also looked very good. There's no doubt they are a top 20 or higher program. After seeing their kids wrestle it's obvious that they'd be a dominant force here in Wisconsin and I suspect in many states. It's time for us to face reality - these kids are for real and they deserve our respect.
One more thing - I personally saw several "older" wrestlers from some Wisconsin schools and it was rumored that a few kids on some of the out of state schools had some "redshirts" as well. Let's be fair when we bring up the age thing!
Congrats to Eric - I look forward to seeing him compete on the next level!

everyone can make up excuses or reasons as to why hes beating so many ppl. but his older brother set the bar pretty high (4x undef.) and eric is motivated enough to best that. my coach went to Brandon in the late nineties and he still tears everyone up.

make up anything you want but hes a great kid in a powerhouse program. and qualifying for the Olympic Trials after your Jr. year is no small accomplishments. congrats man best of luck to you but i doubt you wont need it

You guys and this age thing. Can anyone give it a rest? First, 10/22/89 would make him barely 19. Rounding to 20 would be OK if you weren't trying to make a federal case out of one year. However, in this case it is irresponsible to present barely 19 as almost 20.

Many kids turn 18 during their sr. year. This is normal. If you are held back for 1 yr., whether academically, socially, athletically, by parents choice, by school's choice or by some act of God, you would be turning 19 your sr. year....as it appears Eric is.
I don't know any of the details related to his situation...I don't even know if that's his real birthday as I don't care. Is it really that big of a deal? I just hate that you can't read anything about him without people trying to throw asterisks all over it. He's been beating quality guys for a long time in a lot of age brackets. Can we give it a rest?
