nice to see jim martin and the bio is nice. he was very deceiving because he always looked like he was 12 years old and might have gotten stuffed into his locker in junior high.

I was 11 years old when I attended this NCAA in Ames, Iowa with my dad. Sitting next to me on the plane flight to Cleveland was Jimmy Martin. He was fresh off his NCAA title. He put down the table in front of him and pulled out a textbook about 1.5 inches thick. For most of the flight he was reading and hiliting his text.
He is currently a doctor in the Penn State area.

I learned that refs position as a junior in h.s.,five years prior to this match. It puts your hips right on the mat and for me it made it harder for top guy to break you over. Also with top guy driving you forward I would plant bent leg knee into the mat and I would pop up right to my feet. Now this was many moons ago and I never had anyone right on the right side, but I really liked this position and found it quite successful.

1st you get stuck with 10 seconds left and then you give up two back points with 25 seconds left. WTH Penrith?

how big was penrith compared to martin. looks like penrith sucked down from 155 and martin from 130. great match.

remember it from 1988.....Martin was my camp counsler at West Point after his freshman year and 4th in nation at 118....looked like he was 12. Did not even shave yet. Was jumping up and down in my Living room when I first watched it.

Let's give J. Martin credit. He is Doctor (Dr.) Jim Martin. No small feat to be a 4X AA, 1X Champ with that work load at school.

I think Brad Penrith lost because he had white headgear, black singlet, blue kneepads, and red shoes. OMG

Insane!! Soooo demoralizing to be in the lead and start the 3rd period on bottom. You figure you've got it wrapped up, and you have riding time? Done right? Riding time lost, a vine to a cheap tilt for the NF, bingo! Fabulous wrestling by Martin. Gotta love a sport where you're literally NEVER out of a match. Cards against him and Martin pulls it out. Fabulous find Guru!

P.S. Your vid of Abas, I've been able to forward to my team to help describe and promote a clinic in our area with the very same, Professor Abas of the low single. Love it! Keep it up!

Still remember this match, I was in high school and was a yearly visitor to the NCAA tournament and Jimmy Martin was my favorite wrestler, he was so tough on top, Penrith was a great competitor as well.

Excellent post. This is my all-time favorite match. Two evenly wrestlers, NCAA finals, with an ending that could only be scripted. Always exciting to watch.

Another NCAA finals battle amongst greats. Penrith an Iowa wrestling legend still coaching in Iowa sporting a luscious stash and mullet and Martin the workman grinder that just finds a way to win on the biggest wrestling stage in short time.

Penrith the current head coach at UNI won the 126-pound national championship at Iowa in 1986 as a sophomore, then placed second at 126 in 1987 and 1988. Martin was a four-time All-American (1986-89)-winning a national championship in 1988 and finishing second, third and fourth in the country during his other years of competition.
