From not making NCAAs to 3rd in the World

Clayton Foster, didnt make the NCAA tournament last year but then went ahead in the summer and placed 3rd in the world at Junior Worlds. Terry Brands says that Junior Worlds might be the second toughest tournament in the World only behind the Senior World Championships/Olympics. How did Clayton make that jump?
