I don't think either wrestler is really out of line here. For Metcalf he is clearly frustrated to lose. He is reacting on his dissapointmetn and on the actions of his opponent. Caldwell should celebrate the fact that all the hard work paid off in the biggest win for him to date. Great competive attitude shown by both wrestlers.

I think it is wrong to run away during a match and do a backflip before the match is over. Looks like Metcalf was just trying to wrestle as his opponent was running away. But I think the subject has been beaten to death

Metcalf beat him earlier in the year! Many times Metcalf finished higher than Caldwell at tournaments, while this was the first time Caldwell beat Metcalf or finished higher at a tournament. Metcalf is not only better than Caldwell, he is probably the best wrestler in college right now, period!

Terrible sportsmanship on Metcalf's behalf. That's why his team to deducted a point. Anyway, Caldwell is clearly the better wrestler. Metcalf is probably in better physical shape, but that conditioning obviously won't stop someone like Caldwell who is a lot better technically. In fact, there are two others in the149 w.c. who are technically as good as Metcalf. If they can get into better shape, they will also likely beat Metcalf at some point.

guys have backflips b4 in the finals of ncaa finals. i c no big deal with it. i think he celebrated too early though

just because he is happy doesnt mean you have to do a backflip. Im not saying that wat metcalf did was right cause it wasnt. infact it made him look like an ass@#$e but caldwell could have celebrated in anyother fashion without causing something like this

They celebrate all the time in Football before the game is over, same with basketball....seconds before they have won a game that is unreachable for their opponents they start celebrating. (In football they even dump water on the head coach minutes before the game is over.) Watch championhsip college games for basketball and football and watch the last 10 seconds of a game where the opponent is down by 2 or 3 scores. Get over yourself.

What do you mean we don't allow celebrating in other sports? In baseball the whole team comes off the bench and celebrates at home plate after a home run. And that can be the first pitch of the game. In basketball players dance down court and do excessive 360 dunks and such. You have classy players who lay the ball in and run back on defense and then you have players who feel the need to showboat and then stand on the court facing the crowd and pumping his chest. This is what people love.

Has anyone seen the new sports illustrated? This event has given wrestling some much needed publicity. A centerfold of caldwell in midair being pushed. Why are you all hating on eachother? Wrestling needs excitement. It needs people like Caldwell and Johnny Hendrix doing stuff like this. People want to see a 250 pound man like Rulon do cartwheels. People also want to see class acts like Metcalf or Herbert or Sanderson etc. These are the wrestlers everyone wants to be. But the others are the kinds they want to watch

david vs. goliath? i thnk not, caldwell beat metcalf last year, although it was a controversial fall, i thnk everyone would agree that they knew caldwell had the potential to beat metcalf again, i really dont feel that the backflip was totally unacceptable, i just think that he should've waited until the whistle was blown to celebrate

I think most coaches and athletes know that celebrating after an NCAA championship, Gold Medal or making the Olympic Team is alright. Take the context into consideration. The context of this was David just beat Goliath. The people that dont agree tend to be extremely biased fans and in addition cant even put themselves in a wrestlers shoes.

Thats why I hate Rulon Gardner! He did Cartwheels. Unbelievable. He should have been pushed straight off the stage as well.
How dare he celebrate after such a huge upset. Be humble and walk off the stage.

Running, flips and such before the whistle blows in the national championship? He should of pushed him harder. I don't resent Metcalf one bit; it's wrestling. I can understand Caldwell's excitement, but he went way overboard.

Interesting point. But I think its alright to celebrate after you win, especially a national title. I dont think it is the same as a touchdown dance. A touchdown dance usually means that the game is going on. If it is a game winner than usually the team runs on the field and the guys celebrate like crazy. There are no flags. Or think of the NCAA basketball where everyone rushes on the court after a win and jump all over eachother. Those guys would probably do a backflip if they could and wouldnt kick three of their teammates in the face.

If you match apples to apples I think you will see that in all sports people go crazy when they win an NCAA title. Its an emotional experience for a lot of people, some more than others.

watch the match again. metcalf stops wrestling when the whistle blows, starts to give up and then when he sees caldwell start running, he takes off after him like a madman. he knew exactly what he was going to do and it wasn't a wrestling move. metcalf has been doing this crap all year with his little extra shoves out of bounds, shooting after the whistle blows, unnecessary forearms to the back of the head, typical bs.

then to make matters worse usaw's craig sesker comes out with his stupid article wanting everyone to stop bashing brent. all the while when iowa fans were bashing the hell out of bubba jenkins and caldwell during the season, they just let everything slide because they weren't iowa kids.

Why is wrestling the only sport in the NCAA where a back flip during regulation is not a penalty? Wasn't there a new rule that classified a back flip from the standing position as potential dangerous or and illegal move?

it happens all the time in Boxing. usually the boxer will do just enough to get ahead on points and then at the end of the fight before the bell rings they will just dance around with their hands in the air. this is not a fighters mentality. Oscar Delahoya also comes to mind.

Sad really. Caldwell earned his right to celebrate. Metcalf should have allowed it. Instead, of a highlight that could promote the true essence of the sport that: Anyone can be beaten. What do we get? A talented kid who gets beat and behaves like a sore loser.

I can understand where both wrestlers were coming from. Caldwell accomplished one of his,if not the most defining moment in his career by beating the man everyone said he couldnt. Celebration is apart of our espn sports culture so I can see how he got carried away in his feat.
Metcalf has been wrestling 7 minutes all season long so it should come as no surprise that he wrestled 7 minutes at the final... I respect both wrestlers. They accomplished more than i have ever had

There is a lot more to being a champion than winning and losing. What you do, say and how and when you push or decide to flip. The Best always have style and class. Their style is remembered and respected and even the haters respect them because they had respect for their opponents, even as they defeated them. Think Barry Sanders, Walter Payton, Cael Sanderson. They are humbled by the fact that the world is amazed by their talent and they do not damage their image by show boating and trash talk. They could both elevate their game if you know what I mean.

Metcalf quit in the third period. He hung his head and rested it on the mat for some time. He got broken and quit. Instead of hanging his head and giving up he should have shown this aggressiveness then and maybe he would have not been so upset. Metcalfs fault for getting down mentally. The push was an act of frustration for getting beaten. Uncalled for since Metcalf stopped wrestling at a few points in the third also. Caldwell stopped wrestling for two seconds, so what, the match had been won at the expense of Brent giving up earlier. Metcalf quit for more than two seconds when he was hanging his head and resting it on the mat. Poor loser Brent has no one to blame but himself. It was a good match and he lost that happens. Learn from it, grow up, and move on. Good luck to both wrestlers in the future.

I realize I may have expressed myself in a rather forward manner earlier, but that was before I took my medicine..(3 Heinekens) Brett Metcalf is a f***ing animal, stud and his ability as an athlete is in the top 5th percentile of the world...nation...no world.
Here is the beautiful thing about Metcalf, (not that it was easy for Caldwell, just a littler) Metcalf would be a better Military leader than Caldwell, Metcalf would probably* (not sure) be a better coach than Caldwell. (Caldwell can’t communicate his own unnatural God given abilities effectively.) If any person was able to bottle Metcalf’s desire, focus and work ethic, they would become a billionaire.
Metcalf has other worldly talents (which seemed diminished by Caldwell's Ballet of Violence and Grace) and this may just make him a two time National Champion. Do any of you realize what Metcalf has achieved? Have any of you ever wrestled? If you have than you realize the Euclidian nature of what this man has done.
Now...I am from Jersey and I have been closely watching every single wrestler of notable presence, leave our Garden State. I knew, and everyone knew Darrion as a gifted unusual talent. Cat like, strong, technically sound...well he may even be inventing moves, so there is not a word for that, and finally, driven to succeed unlike any human. (last element in the melting pot) A coach can't make a Darrion Caldwell, he can only recognize, influence and support him.
This is a great year for wrestling fans, and I don't mean to diminish Jordan Burroughs unbelievable achievement (135lb NJ State Champion) looks at him today, what he has done, FOR CHRISTS SAKE! Thank You Jordan!

A couple of years ago CJRodriguez lost a points for celebrating by throwing his headgear in the air after the whistle had blown because he thought he won the match. The points the ref gave the other kid cost Rodriguez the match. why is there such inconsistency? Caldwell does backflips and runs around the mats and he doesn't get penalized? Yes Metcalf was wrong to push him- that's why Iowa lost a point, but Caldwell was equally wrong to act like that, I think the only reason he didn't get penalized was because Metcalf pushed him.

That's a good point. And to the people who say, this isn't the NFL and I don't want anyone celebrating like this is the NFL. Well guess what, the NFL is watched by more people than any other sport. So maybe they are doing something right.... And while I'm at it, I'd like all levels of wrestling in the United States to switch to freestyle. Then we'll have better performances in the olympics. And riding time is boring.

All I know is Caldwell beat Metcalf in an impressive and exciting fashion...something wrestling lacks. Loved every minute and wish all the matches were like this...regardless of celebrations that people disagree with.

Iowa's style is when the other guy goes out of bounds, the Iowa wrestler gives him an extra shove. Metcalf and the other Iowa guys have done that shove in every match I've seen. I think it's a jerky thing to do but they're consistent with it and this shove wasn't something beyond normal.

I saw the video from a different angle as well and it looked like Metcalf slowed up, took a couple knees to the face from Caldwell's jump, and then gave him a shove as he went out of bounds. When you watch this video it looks worse but if pay attention you'll see that Metcalf slowed up after he heard the whistle. Then he gave Caldwell a bit of the shove like usual as he went out of bounds.
I'm a Mizzou fan and could care less about Iowa. I think Caldwell knows he shouldn't have run around like that, at least before time expired. And Metcalf wrestles until that clock runs out, no matter what. I wrestled a Hawkeye once, not even a first-stringer, but he beat on my *** until time ran out no matter how far ahead he was :). It sucked! But like it or not that's the way they go.

Caldwell wrestling a pretty good match but regard less that celebration that he did was completely unnecessary. If you are going to win, great, but after win the right way, and pick yourself up off the mat with your head up high. I'm all for celebrations but what Caldwell did starting the the flips, was to much. It's a shame Metcalf is going to have to break his neck in their next rematch. Metcalf deserved it more, period.

Iowa Wrestling-The problem is lack of character and it begins with their head coach. You can not be a class act and behave responsibly if your head coach can not pull himself together and behave like an adult.

athlete is definitely a debatable term. it sounds like you're referring to vertical jump and quickness, but that doesn't necessarily make him a better athlete and definitely doesn't make him a better wrestler (although the match did!) i think caldwell is lucky metcalf didn't break HIS neck!! i can't stop watching this i love that metcalf is such a competitor

If i was metcalf it think i would have just flung him right off the platform, but if i was caldwell i would just stay in the center finish the match and shake hands then do my backflips. Look at Teyon Ware he waited for the whistle to blow, shoke hands with the other wrestler then did his backflip. So I think Metcalf was just being himself and i would also be mad if caldwell started doing backflips with time still on the clock.

it is easy for someone to say that they would have been the bigger man and not done what brent did, but really would you have? as caldwell started his celebratory run around the mat there was still time. If you are Metcalf and you know this of course you would keep wrestling and if your opponent goes and does a backflip i bet you would have done the exact same thing.

I thought Caldwell beat Metcalf with some class and as a respectable athlete.
But now I see this and Metcalf should have pushed him off the mat. That was very disrespectful for Caldwell to do that to Metcalf as a wrestler. It might come back on Caldwell.

i dont think this is wrong at all i would have done the exact same thing celebrating at the end of a match is one thing but when there is still time left you owe your opponent that last 3 or 5 seconds of the match i would have done the same thing...

if you look at the match after this when burroughs won all he did was raised both his hands! He beat an undefeated wrestler too, yes i know it wasnt metcalf. caldwell deserved getting pushed running away in the middle of the match. I would have been fine with him celebrating after he shook hands because he did beat him fair and scare but not with time left on the clock.

This type of celebrating is taunting and has no place in wrestling. The clock hadn't even run out. I wish that people would show some class when they win. The shove was uncalled for, but so was the excessive celebration.

Calswell did absoloutely nothing wrong. There is no NCAA rule or regulation that would prohibit any wrestler from doing what he did after winning the National Championship. On the other hand, Metcalfs team was penialized for his violation of clearly stated rules and regulations.

Caldwell laid a dominant beating on Metcalf, and his inflated ego centric self centered pysche knew nothing else other than to lash out.
Metcalf has the whoile off season to stew and brew about his beating, we'll see how he reacts next season.

This angle makes it seem like Metcalf was a jerk, but it wasn't as bad as it looks. The other replay angle they showed (i think ESPN showed it after the commercial) a better angle on what happened. Metcalf was chasing Caldwell to the whistle, as is reasonable. He lets up when the match ends, and his momentum carried him close to Caldwell, but with his arms down. Without the backflip, it's possible there would have been some incidental contact just because Metcalf was basically sprinting after Caldwell until the match ended. The backflip surprised Metcalf (you could see it in his face on the other replay), who brought his arms up as Caldwell's feet came up towards his head. He really doesn't give him much of a shove, but Caldwell is mid backflip so it looks really bad. (On this angle, you can see Metcalf slow down at the buzzer, if he really wanted to shove him, he would have kept running)

I know it sounds like spin. When I saw this angle it crossed my mind that Metcalf could get thrown out of the tournament and lose Iowa the team title, because it looked so bad. The other replay showed how Metcalf really brought his hands up when Caldwell's feet came up close to him, then pushes them away. Makes for a big flop of a back flip, but really wasn't horrifically unsportsmanlike.
What Metcalf could have done was try to help Caldwell up, though disappointment along with the ref cutting in makes this unlikely.

Caldwell screwed up and Metcalf screwed up. They both know it but in the heat of a battle things happen.

That was wrong by Metcalf. I don't think you can defend something like that by saying there is time left on the clock. If you watch Caldwell's interview on YouTube, he even admitted that he celebrated a littel early. He took some of the blame, and said Metcalf didn't maliciously push him. Caldwell comes out of this looking like the bigger man.

It's easy for you to say. Act like you've been there before? Well he wasn't! And it wasn't like he just beat some scrub in a dual meet match. He beat someone that he was hearing about from all angles, in the biggest tournament of his life. Ok, maybe he should have waited one more second to do the celebrating but was Metcalf trying to score with that push? He needed 5 points in a second (impossible to do). But since he accomplished something so great, I wanted to see him celebrate the way he wanted to.

Time was out before he even did the round off!!!!! Should have been Flagrant and gone! I would celebrate my a*# off if I had beat the most dominate wrestler in the game right now!!!

There was only 2 seconds on the clock. Yes, Caldwell celebrated 2 seconds too early, but he also just defeated the #1 ranked wrestler. Metcalf couldn't get anything done in 2 seconds. His push was incredibly immature. The way he chased Caldwell around the mat, he acted like an angry 5 year old not a grown man! He must feel stupid after seeing what he did.
I bet alot of people have lost respect for him because of his behavior. A stand-up, class-act guy knows how to lose gracefully and come back even better.

that was ridiculous what caldwell did he should've never done that. he wrestled a great match but you have to respect the guy your wrestling enough to not throw it in his face like that, it shows no class. im sure anyone in metcalfs position would've done the same thing. the guy was running and didnt have enough respect to stay in there and keep bangin the whole match untill the whistle blew

Seriously, when I saw it live I was disappointed in the push. I wanted to see to the backflip again. I saw him do it after he won states his senior year of high school and it was awesome.
