Dave Dean is awesome.

Dave must have some pretty strong feelings to talk about this in the open. I asked him why he left MSU. I was expecting him to say something about Minkel but he said it was because he had an opportunity to be a better father. True class.

Absolutely awesome. I wish Illinois would think this way. They have their heads so far up USA wrestling's butt, you smell the stink at every tournament.

Anonymous Coward. I struggle to think what MSU would be like with Dave and Chandler running the program there. It is a shame that it will never happen. They would have built a dynasty. I think they are in so many other ways. You just can't overcome some things.

About 15 years ago, when msu finished third at ncaa's, i went to there intensive camp and to graduate the camp you had to run 12 miles. Well i was a soft freshaman 215 pounder. so needless to say it took me a long time to finish this run, i was to say like 4 hours( i was not last though) and he waited the whole time for me to finish and gave me a pat on the back and my tee shirt.. and then at a tournament he was recruiting someone he remembered me and came and chatted with me. my b-team teammates were like holy smokes.. i had that " lion and gazelle, wake up and run": shirt untill i got kicked off my college team for bad grades as a sophmore.

his vision has been steadfast & committed to the development of wrestling in the state of michigan. there is something to learn from his plan & more people from other states should jump on board. makes sense to me. invest at home and reap the benefits in the future.

Dave still is a great guy and coach. What you see is what you get.

Hey Dave!..you were a really great guy and coach at the the J.Robinson camp in 1985 at Edinboro University.You worked with me almost the whole camp and for that I am indebted to you.

i'm not going to pretend like i know the whole story behind the issue, but at least the situation is being addressed. And i hope flowrestling keeps giving more interviews about the financial backing and administrative action of the sport so that we can save the sport of wrestling from dying or being isolated to a few various states.

I wonder how USA Wrestling feels about this? Sounds like they passed on a plan that could have done a lot for wrestling and built the sport at all levels. Imagine if USA Wrestling Oregon was supporting Portland State. Would they still have a team? Probably. With 10,000 athletes you can't say there isn't any interest.
In Oregon that would mean a chance to build a corporate partnership with Nike and that would have gived them the chance to save the Ducks.
Dave talks about states that love wrestling. There are so many states that love wrestling that have been hurt by doing business USA Wrestlings way? Okie State had a monopoly until Gable wedged Iowa into the mix. Then hundreds of college teams dropped some for title 9 but some because of inept coaches from this system and some because there was no way they could compete with the big guys.
USA Wrestling sent out letters and gave press conferences but in the end all they could say was "sorry for the loss, why don't you join the Hawk Club" and "look at how good Gable is"!.
When Olivet dropped USA Wrestling sent that same letter and press release. These guys got into the AD's office, found out the issues, and found a resolution to support and keep the program.
MYWA and NUWA are a start and what wrestling needs.
It is a shame that people had to fight AAU to start USA Wrestling and now the fight is starting again.

The OTC is run on a First come First serve basis when talked about dorms and getting kids to stay and eat on campus. So to say that all these okie state guys were staying there and the michigan kids couldn't is BS. I'm not even from oklahoma! I know many many schools that also have stayed off campus for many events and training cycles at the OTC. The Whoa is Me syndrome is part of the problem

Youth Wrestling in each state can create their own opportunities because they are empowered to build wrestling, WOW it is fun to work together.!
The PRODUCT(organized & affordable wrestling) sure raises the enjoyment for parents and wrestlers, youth wrestling in our area has vastly increased since we adopted this system. We have club duals, tournaments, State and National events. Reinvestment is the key to growth.

Supporting your own instead of someone else's. Great concept along time coming. Maybe we can now build something here in Alabama instead of driving 7 - 10 hours every weekend

This man is on to something. A program that allows each state to financially support itself, develop its talent and compete at the highest levels. FANTASTIC!

This program could change the face of wrestling as we know it. Through this program's business model, wrestling could gain programs in states like Florida, Georgia, etc.

Decentralized power that works for the interests of the state of MI...Dave Dean for governor of MI! Bucky, yes they are a competitor...and every wrestler pays a fee, but it stays in state. Not complicated...as Dave stated, under USA wrestling, every kid pays a fee, but benefits are not fairly distributed. Wish we had vision like this 30 yrs ago. Ferris State was a top 5 wrestling program in D 2 in the late 80s early 90s....and now what...they have nothing...but they bought USA memberships.

Outstanding effort and accomplishment! Keep it going. Gotta take care of ur home before the rest of the world. and stand up for ur self.

Really interesting interview, but still a little unclear about what myway is. Is it a competitor to USAwrestling, but a state organization? So, every wrestler in MI pays a small fee, and they reinvest in the state? Or is it something else?
