It was all Technique.... I don't know which match you were watching;but from Ryan's Hi Crotch setups to Bormets scrambling and relentless attacks... there is no way that you could ask for a better match than what these two great men gave.

As far as I can see there is no 1990 Big Ten finals matches on the left. Flowrestling has not shown any matches from this tournament that I know of. I have the 1990 Big Ten tourney on video tape at home fool and Terry Brands crosses his singlet straps during the match because they get tanged in his oppenents arm. Do you want me to send you a copy?

I've heard the "too ripped for their own good" bit before...

I know I've wondered. I just can't imagine these guys, who are CLASS ACTS off the mat, compromising their integrity like that.
Maybe if they played baseball!

I'm not sure what video you are talking about. Maybe the 1991 Big Ten finals. I said Terry Brands crossed his singlet straps at the 1990 Big Ten finals. Different year.

I don't mean to be myself here but that entire Iowa Team was a little too "Ripped" for it's own good that year. If you know what I mean.....

Ryan crossed his singlet straps so they would not get caught. Terry Brands did the same thing in the 1990 Big Ten finals. Also, I would love to see the Morgan and Funk matches from this tourney.

Bormet's match v Pat Smith hooked me on this sport. I recall watching Bormet get pumped before his match. One of the most intense moments I can ever recall.

Yeah looked to me like Bormet was using his injury time to stall. Maybe Caldwell watched this match before the finals. lol

They didn't do away with 118, they added 7 pounds to it. They added 7 pounds to all of the weights and made extreme changes to the weight management process prior to the 98-99 season.

Why is Ryan's singlet twisted like that? Not much technique from these two, especially considering they are such good coaches now

Mark, the weight class was 158 until 99 when they did away with the 118 pound weight class and re assigned the weights. Although the commentary isn't the best they got the weight right.

Two future big time coaches. Ryan is huge, questionably so. Bormet has a switch not much else. Bormet has hair!

I have it but its only the last 2 periods. ESPN didn't show hardly any full matches. You'd think a match like that would have gotten the nod.

I know the IOWA haters will blast me but the other 1991 Big Ten match I was gonna put up didn't' really hold a candle to the pace of this one. Overall a pretty good Big Ten finals Bart Chelesvig and Marty Morgan had a serious throwdown and Funk edges out Lehrke in overtime.

Enjoy!

158lbs Tom Ryan vs. Sean Bormet - 1991 Big Tens

September 24, 2009
Tom Ryan fresh of his transfer from Syracuse to Iowa ranked 2nd in the nation runs into Sean Bormet a red shirt freshman from Michigan. Bormet really was willing to die with each attack in this mat which made for some great scrambles. One of the top D1 coaches in the country and the most successful club coache in the country battling back in the day. Ryan finished 2nd to Pat Smith at the 91 NCAA's and Bormet did not place. Coincidentally Bormet faced and almost dethrowned Pat Smith in the finals 3 years later.
