+ See More - See Less -Dan Gable climbed to the top with such determination and focus year after year as a wrestler. After going 117-1 as a collegiate wrestler, only losing his last match, he went on to win a world championship and a Gold medal at the 1972 Olympics. During his Olympic run in Munich, Gable never gave up a point.
The only thing that surpassed his remarkable and dominating wrestling was his success in coaching and training his Iowa Hawkeyes. Coach Gable won a record nine straight team titles at the helm of the Iowa Hawkeyes. His teams attacked the competition with an aggression that was uniquely "Gablesque". In fitting style, Dan Gable retired in 1997 only after his team took to the most dominating National Championship the sport has ever seen.
Dan Gable is a wrestling icon and a one of a kind leader of men. He currently has pulled himself out of retirement to, once again, help bring the Iowa Hawkeyes to the top, as an assistant coach to one of his former wrestlers, Tom Brands.

PLEASE POST "ESPN CLASSIC SPORTSCENTURY DAN GABLE"
There has to be some other footage floating around out there.
FYI - being an old timer, I saw Gable wrestle live about 20-25 times. This includes his first NCAA title in 1968, his loss to Owings in 1970 and his gold medal match in 1972. He was definitely the most dominating wrestler of his time. In his senior year at ISU, he set a record of 25 straight pins which might still stand today. (Anyone know?)
A guy from Lehigh (Herb Campbell) stopped his pin streak with a 27-2 loss. (This was before the tech fall rule was introduced.) I'll bet Campbell felt like he had been run over by a truck after that match.
When Gable lost to Owings in the 1970 NCAA finals, both wrestlers had pinned their way thru the tournament, and everyone knew their finals match was going to be a battle. To this day, I still think that was the greatest college match ever. You had to have been there to really feel the excitement.
Gable was great, but why is it there's no footage of him when he actually looks great? In fact, the only footage I've seen of Gable wrestling is of him getting beat (against Owings and Kemp) and then this one of him protecting a lead at the end of a match. Where's the footage of him taking guys down and pinning them? Somebody needs to break into Gable's house, steal some footage, and upload it to YouTube or Flo
