Branch was winning in the 1996 finals when he blew his knee out and had to default. They carried him to the podemn to recieve his award. Should have been a 3x champ.

If he entered the competition with a record of 8-9, and won 5 matches, he was a national champion with a record of 13-8, which is a winning record. Many people use this as a trivia question, to which the correct answer(no national champion had a losing record). He is however, the first to ENTER the tournament with a losing record and win a national title. Congratulations Mark! on a great career.
