+ See More - See Less -Stephen Abas cannot be compared to any other wrestler who ever walked on the mat. He is a different breed of wrestler. His wrestling style and personality blended to make a cocky, creative, and vicious competitor. Abas redefined the possibilities in the wrestling world with his amazing acrobatic moves, which frustrated and embarrassed his opponents. His arrogant composure only compounded their frustration.
Consistent with his unique style, Stephan Abas went on to wrestle at Fresno State, away from the typical Midwest power house schools. On his journey he became a four-time All-American and three time NCAA Champion. After college he dominated the freestyle national circuit and became an Olympian. Abas won silver in the Athens 2004 Olympics.
Basically, a shugyosha was an apprentice to the way of the sword and was self-trained. This makes his accomplishments astounding. Age 13-30 he was 60-0 in battles to the death! He then became so good that for the next 30 years he defeated every opponent without killing them!
Stephen, wishing you well on your attempt to win gold in China!
