to anyone who is in disbelief, it's the basics that make a good solid wrestler. it's a low risk move which makes it even better. like any other move, you have to drill it a million times
One thing I noticed is that this set up is for a "right handed" high crotch if he doesn't go down but this is a "left handed" tie. So you'll either have to wait until the opponent ties with the left, or practice a strong "left handed" high crotch. Or the power double is a nicealternative but easier to defend IMO.
As far as you guys saying this is not a high caliper move: TRY IT. We messed around with it in the mat room and Coach Charles was right: "IT CATCHES YOUR OPPONENT OFF GUARD" which is all you need to do to mount an effective offense.
I concur, I do agree that if the move works, then go with it. I am just skeptical that this would be something I would try against experienced wrestlers but I could be wrong. I also apologize for the cheap shot by me mentioning Terry Brands, that was uncalled for. Thank you for calling me out on that, I let my emotions get the best of me after reading some of the shots against my original post. I will not let that happen again.
The thing about this hold is that it is a very low risk set-up. Obviously, a high caliber opponent is not going to fall to his knees every time. The beauty of it is there is a numerous amount of shots that you can hit off of it, and if nothing else, it wears downs on the opponent's shoulder, makes him tired, and makes him not want to go to his collar tie. There are plenty of high caliber guys that hit this. Take Michael Chandler for example.
Also, it tends to work better when you circle away from the collar tie and snap. It gets the guy to step harder with the collar tie foot and gets him more off balanced.
And TJ X, that last comment about terry brands was a cheap shot...with respect.
def leave yourself more exposed compared to other snaps. and u reshot sweep off this. hit it today after the drill partner thought a little tech tues would make him studly.
Folks, I clearly stated, " I think this is a good technique but not against high caliber talent." One post stated this would work well in high school "because everyone ties up ear to ear..." I agree. In my opinion, which we are all entitled to, I would not think this technique would work against upper echelon Division 1 wrestlers or above that. In fact, I am skeptical this would work against high caliber high school wrestlers. But if you disagree, that is your right. Shawn Charles has proven himself at the highest levels of wrestling and if this technique worked for him, then it should be used by those of you who believe it will work. Of course, it didn't work very well against Terry Brands back in the day.
TJ X said: I am not so high on reaching palm up with left hand to opposite side which exposes the left side of your body if even only for a moment as you are inviting an elbow pass to your left leg from a savvy wrestler. I also don't care for pulling the man into you and taking a rather large step(s) backwards thus wrestling "on your heels" and inviting a Brandon Slay type double leg. I think this is a good technique but not against high caliber talent. There are many great techniques on this page and this is not one of them in my opinion.
Do you know who shawn charles is. at the level he wrestled at he did not meet up with too many less than high caliber talent. if he is showing it, it is effective and sound. please tj, post some of your technique, I would love to compare it to world level wrestler shawn charles' technique.
the counter to this collar tie will work because he changed his position for the snap down. count the steps for each foot. they both move backwards, so an opponent shot would be easily sprawled on leading to a go behind. for the snapdown that was not effective as the opp raises his level the hi-c or a sweep single would be effective. remember you need to practice this 1,000 before you could probably hit it live unless you are superman!
just watched again, he did not take a large step back. they were small steps. he's in good position if opponent shoots as he pulls down. good technique.
TJX, you cant shoot a double with one arm. Shawn with his opposite end arm would just block any attempt at a blast double. your high crotch scenario would be not possible either
u dont know what u are talking about TJ X. Hows he gonna elow pass and score off this? his attack hand is being controlled when u snap. btw, this is a great move to teach high schoolers because everyone tries to collar tie ear to ear.
