Why has international wrestling gotten away from the amount of mat wrestling allowed here? In my opinion, they need to go back to the rules and interpretations that were in effect back then. Nobody is a master in the par terre position anymore because that kind of wrestling is almost nonexistent in freestyle today.

Chris Bollin, Mike Bollin, and Scott Rieck were my coaches growing up in Kansas. Chis is an awesome guy and great friend! He even taught me that sweet front head lock and I pass it along to kids at freestyle camps every summer.

Welcome to this week's installment of my own Match of the Week.

This week I am choosing a bout between University of Oklahoma All-American Chris Bollin and Olympic and 7x World Champion Valentin Jordanov at 125.5 lbs at the US International Open. The tournament was usually held down in Florida but that year it was in Teaneck, NJ. I'm not sure of the year but I believe it is either 1994 or 1995.
Why I chose this match:
Well, for one it's a rare find. Not too many people know that this match ever took place and that Chris Bollin had beaten such an accomplished wrestler. Jordanov was competing up a weight.
Two, there's some good action in the bout. Jordanov is known as one of the most technical, crafty wrestlers ever, and he showed some of this in the match against Bollin. Bollin is real powerful with an amazing front headlock.
A few things about this match:
Jordanov had a early lead with a turn and a big arm throw. He then took a bad shot off the whistle and was turned 3 times by Bollin in a front headlock. I've seen Jordanov take bad shots before and at 114.5 he was able to improve his position and score. This wasn't the case here. Bollin capitalized on the mistake and turned it into points. Bollin also did a great job converting a low single attack directly into a leg lace. He was able to turn Jordanov twice with this technique.
Bollin was an All-American for OU in 1989 at 118 lbs. He had wins over some big names like Mark Schwab, Ken Chertow, and Zeke Jones.
Valentin Jordanov is considered to be one of the greatest/most accomplished wrestlers ever. He had 7 World Titles (1983, 1985, 1987, 1989, 1993, 1994, 1995) and 1 Olympic Title (1996). He also earned a Bronze in 1986 and 1992 and 2 Silvers (1990, 1991). A master in the par terre position.
Enjoy.
