I remember going to wrestling meets with my dad when Ray was a junior and senior at Iowa. I was always exited to get his autograph during the meets, I called him,"The William Shakespeare lookin guy". He was such a neat guy.

Still is!

Not your typical Iowa-style mentality, but a fan favorite nonetheless here in Hawkeye country. I would like to pick Gable's mind to see how he approached this type of personality...

Nice to see him doing well.
Yeah to bad I really wanted to hear this story, I met Ray when he was training in Bulgaria (Belmeken). I was there with the National Dutch team. Really nice guy but odd indeed. He was talking about creating his own country etc. was not really sure if he was serious at that time.

I watched a dual when Ray wrestled for Iowa. I can't recall against who though. Ray was sleeping before his match, and when he was up they got him up and he went out and pinned his opponent in about 20 seconds. The hair was a bit wild back then also. I can't recall his weight class, but, the teammate above him had lost a wrestle off to Ray, and the guy was jacked! The guy was at Iowa for Football as well as wrestling. The time before that, I saw Ray on the cover of USA Wrestling which I believe was in a match where he beat Pat Lynch who at the time was NJ's winningest wrestler. He's an interesting guy, no doubt about it.

I once heard that Ray used a time machine to travel back to April, 1912 and save the Titanic from that iceberg. I wonder if there is any truth to that?

I think I wrestled Ray about 15 times (never beat him) and he was always the way he is in the video. He is a great guy, very unique, and never brags about himself. I know the kids in his club love him. Keep doing what you are doing.

When I started wrestling in eigth grade(1991) at Canon McMillan, Ray was certainly a legend already. The gumby doll, 1600 SAT, ran to Hershey, tied the sauna doors shut, etc. etc., facts and fictions but a legend none the less. I had never personally met him until he showed up as a coach at North Allegheny junior high (I coach Canon McMillan junior high) and I sought him out to gain conversation any chance I could get. Usually find him sleeping in some odd spot but anyhow truly a great individual for the sport of wrestling, a good coach, and a fine person to have a conversation with although he probably would prefer to be debating. We now have sons the same age ( I hope he sticks around this area so they can wrestle), best wishes with the baby due in Oct (I also have baby due in Oct but a boy). See you soon!

I remember hearing a story about how Ray almost missed his Big Ten finals match. They were calling him to the mat and he wasn't showing up...he was no where to be found. Finally Gable went up to the hall in the stadium and found Ray playing Mortal Combat on the arcade! Gable told him that he was about to DQ his match and Ray said, "Tell them I'll be down in a minute...I'm about to beat the whole game". He finally came down right before tehy DQ'd him!!

I could listen to Ray Brinzer stories all day! What a great guy with such an interesting perspective on wrestling. He always seemed to be a fan favorite. I enjoyed watching him wake up from a dead sleep, having no warm-up (except a few neck stretches), then going out and destroying the competition.

I loved watching Ray wrestle. I also agree with him about NCAA wrestling, it wears our kids out. And the best don\'t even try F.S. or greco anymore. Their just tired of the grind.
