Strange to see all those headlocks and standing witches--like something out of Junior High wrestling. But that first lift by Douglas was unreal--like he was picking up a guy half his weight or something.

I love this match and watch it frequently on an old Iowa PN tape. Chipo was nuts and capable of any thing at any time.

I absolutely agree to throw Caldwell in that bunch. I also love the ultra attacking and scoring mentality of Jake Herbert, very exciting to watch. And how could I have left out Randy Lewis, maybe the biggest pinner and balls out attitude of his time.

As much as people like to hate Caldwell for what he did you have to put him in the category of guys that would just throw the kitchen sink at you for 7 minutes almost wreckless wrestling at times. Seemed to work out for him.

Actually, Chipo used a similar backwards somersalt roll in the NCAA Finals several years later when all looked bleak against Daryl Pope only to reverse a wild position and take Pope down securing his NCAA Championship Title. To see him then leap to his feet and launch his headgear off the stage was awesome! In my opinion and to answer somebody else's post, the days of the flamboyant superstars like Alger, Chipo, and Barry Davis are gone. Dan Gable trained his wrestlers to pin people and to score points by the truckload, an art that has slowly waned through the decades. There are some folks who come along and bring back those great memories, guys like Askren, Sanderson, Brands, McIlravy, etc. but all in all, I think wrestling has changed...for the worse on ALL levels, part of which can be attributed to rule changes and the referees not allowing guys to work for the fall, everything has to be on the feet. Just my opinion.

Little under the weather last week so I didn't post anything. These two had some pretty impressive credentials when looking back on their careers, who they beat and where they ended up. Chipo's almost "nerdy" look with the frizzy hair and lanky body type made you question how looks can really be deceiving. An Douglas continuing his career long past most do tint he sport.

Small fact on Melvin Douglas, he actually bumped Chris Campbell for oldest US Olympic wrestler when he made the 1996 Olympic team.
