And Winston beat Welch at Midlands, they were 1-1 this year. And Winston didn't make any excuses, but his knee was all torn up before the second match. He clearly wasn't himself.

Osugrappler Is An Idiot   July 15, 2008 at 9:58pm
welch doesn't dodge competition, he has competed at the USA open for surfing every summer since he was 15. This is his last year he will be able to do it since he will be going to Northwestern. But imagine if he invested more time into his wrestling...
PS. don't be jealous because we are more beautiful in CALI

just my opinion...i think welch would beat winston. its too bad they didn't wrestle this year. winston seems like he would shut down most of welch's funk by strength and good position, but winston wouldn't be able to keep up with welch's pace and movement.

I think winston and his fans may be in for a somewhat disappointing college career.

I like Winston, I'm from NJ and its been great to watch him. But he hangs on his opponents too much, relies on his strength and athleticism and cannot compete in the high level handfighting game. Polz is clearly better coached and more technical of the two. I fear for Winston's college career.

Yes, I did wrestle at a D1 program in the late eighties and early nineties. Wright, Welch and Howe have all beaten D1 college wrestlers in the last 12 months. Wright won the Fila Nationals and Howe placed third beating several D1 wrestlers. Polz and Howe are very evenly match wrestlers and met earlier this summer with Howe beating Polz by 1pts. At this time in their wrestling careers none of these guys can compete against top tier D1 wrestlers, but they can all compete against 2nd tier D1 wrestlers. Welch did not beat any nationally ranked wrestlers at Midlands but did beat a few second tier wrestlers. Welch also lost 9-4 to Ryan Morningstar at Midlands and Morningstar's record this season was 22-14. Welch is a fantastic wrestler but he still need to grow and improve if he wants to excel in college. At this time, I do not think Welch is any better than Wright, Polz or Howe and it is unfortunate that he does not compete at national events against top high school competition.

I seen Winston at the Super 32 lose to the Cubberly kid from Ohio! I think he is a vbery talented wrestler but sometimes is flat out out workd in close matches! Sometimes you are so used to winning that close matches can where on you. As you are not used to it!

Polz is training at Overtime WC, which is the same club that Howe, Tristis, Tannabaum, Poeta (just to name a few) wrestle at. He sees great wrestlers day in and day out while training at Overtime WC. Polz also placed 2nd at Junior Nationals last summer, so he is no slouch. Welch cannot tech Polz or Winston and I have seen all these three wrestlers in person. Welch would have a hard time against either Winston or Polz and it is unfortunate that Welch does not compete at these type of events. It will be interesting to see how well he does his freshman year in College, because he will not be able to avoid the top guys when he is wrestling in college. On another note, Midlands is nothing like it used to be and there are probably a bunch of high school kids that could place at Midlands. Wright PA, Polz IL, Howe IN and Winston NJ all are talented enough to place at Midlands while in high school.

first i dont think winston gased i think polz wanted to win more and two Matwizard these guys are two stiff there ranked 2 and 4 in the country thats means its not likely its going two be a 19 to 18 match its called hard nose wrestling two great wrestlers going at it welch doesnt see that often i bet polz and winston would destroy most of the wrestlers in cal . polz will beat welch

Both are studs. I like Polz's intensity. Winston is monsterous. I workout with Jason so I am biased, but I can't see these guys beating him. I'm not saying that he would destroy them, but I think he would control them.

he dominated one of iowas best at dream team dual meet and beat cody yohn one of the top guys at 160 and placed high at midlands and has ran through a tough wrestling state in ca with one division tough to say if he went to fargo he wouldnt own that too and it doesnt matter if he goes or not because the olympic styles mean so little to a ncaa championship that who cares about proving whos number one

I agree with Masterblaster about Welch, could you please show up and wrestle some competition? Losing a match or two now may help you in the long run. Also dont forget to add Alex "meatgrinder" Meade in the mix at 160 in Fargo. What a weighht class! On second thought maybe Jason should stay home the competition looks to be brutal in this weight class. No need for Ca. pretty boys amongst midwest/east coast studs

Jason (never shows up) Welch is not going to Fargo from what I understand. As usual another excuse. A word of advice, you can't hide in college! Come to Fargo and put it on the line with guys like Howe, Polz, Winston, Cubberly, Ortiz, Lofthouse and lets sort this mess out!

I agree....scotty puts himself out there match after match and goes after the best kids...every great wrestler has lost here and there....even the guys at the olympic level...its all part of the learning process and climbing the mountain of being better....its the really GREAT wrestlers that would take a loss like this and learn from it...and scotty is EXACTLY that kinda kid

Give'em A Break   July 10, 2008 at 12:42pm
Give Winston a break...he throws himself out there all season long wrestling tough kid after tough kid. I'm sure he'll get raked through the coals for this loss and everyone will piss on him for it. As hard as it is to believe for everyone who scrutinizes rankings and about why wrestler A isn't ranked higher than wrestler B, a loss especially during this part of the wrestling year isn't necessarily a bad thing. Scotty a talented wrestler, he'll make adjustments...he'll be better because of it.

Winston is not looking like the world beater every one thinks. He looks tired and if you take away the baseball slide I doubt he even scores. Polz constant motion and attacking style had Winston scratching his head between breaths. Congrats Conrad and Scotty needs to stop belierving everything he reads about himself.
