i got the chance to go to the Iowa hawkeye intensive training camp and Metcalf was my leader. he was the most disciplined hard working person i have ever met.

part of it is their in-your-face style.
every wrestler in this room is trained to never let the other guy break and to always push the pace. it makes for an intense practice.

i am a big mizzou fan but wow iowa really trains hard and i gotta say metcalf is one of my favorite wrestlers to watch but you already know my favorite wrestlers are the Askrens, Marable and Raymond Jordan

Trueblue, that is like saying if the economy goes bad under a president it is his fault, not really the case. A lot of variables are in the equation.

Well lets say they have made iowa better, they arent exactly great leaders when it comes to expanding the sport of wrestling. With the spotlight and fame for so many years wrestling under Dan Gable fell off the map. His only direct responsibility was Iowa and he did a legendary job. But if you look at the global results of wrestling, while he was the major figure in wrestling, wrestling had a tragic downfall. The results speak for themselves.

I'll never understand why some people do not like Iowa. They win by simply out working their opponents. It's honest and blue collar. Gable and now Brands have have not only made Iowa better but they have made wrestling in America better.

Iowa wrestling is great! Thank God for Gable. USA Wrestling should be thankful that this program is back where it should be, thanks large in part to Tom Brands.

anyone else notice how much they were slipping, and i know the sweat was there, but even in the beginning they were all over the place.

iowa HAS recruited minority kids, the difference is that Marion qualified grade wise. the others didn't, so they went elsewhere. (iowa state) no, everyone in the room isn't a Rhodes scholar, but at least they made the grades to get in.

Cali now we're comparing high school to college? I would say there are at least 30-50 programs with coaches from the gable era who have brought that same philosophy to the program. I have been in practices thaat were intense like that. Caliwrestling, we had those machines in our room and they were called rail runners. not sure if that is correct or not

Tap Out. I would disagree that intensity is intensity. Intensity coming from top ranked college guys is much different than the best intensity coming from a decent high school kid

Welch's I can tell you never wrestled for a coach with much success Because My coach put us through practices much the same I did say the talent was not the same but intensity is still intensity.

Don't know what your getting at, but Iowa does recruit and welcome minorities. Coach Brands and his staff recruit the best wrestlers for the program regardless of ethnicity.

Does Iowa not recruit minorities or do they just choose to go else where to continue with their wrestling? just wondering

Looks like a great intense practice. However, I doubt they will be able to continue at that pace until March nor do I think the coaching staff will plan like this all season. In fact, I don't think many will being that we are only in October. Looks like a solid team with hard working wrestlers.

Gable had a theory that if you need music in the wrestling room to push yourself that you will not be able to do the same when there is no music during competition. Ahh but what does he know.

I thought I work hard in practice, but after watching this, I have a whole new perception on what working hard is. Besides that, I'm speechless and in awe of what the Iowa wrestlers go through everyday. Amazing vid Flow! I'm pretty sure,but someone please clarify for me, is that Doug shwab wrestling with Metcalf? Those 2 were giving it their all and acting like practice is life or death. And who was woopin' up on Nate Moore?

These guys are so high level, to keep that intensity so long, all season is like superhuman! Talking to an Iowa NCAA Champ over the weekend and he said, "Brands gives so much, you just want to please him". It looks like every guy on the team feels that way. Plus the new staff, this is the standard, by which college wrestling is measured. I wish I could wish them luck, but they don't need it.
