- See Less - Stephen Abas cannot be compared to any other wrestler who ever walked on the mat. He is a different breed of wrestler. His wrestling style and personality blended to make a cocky, creative, and vicious competitor. Abas redefined the possibilities in the wrestling world with his amazing acrobatic moves, which frustrated and embarrassed his opponents. His arrogant composure only compounded their frustration.
Consistent with his unique style, Stephan Abas went on to wrestle at Fresno State, away from the typical Midwest power house schools. On his journey he became a four-time All-American and three time NCAA Champion. After college he dominated the freestyle national circuit and became an Olympian. Abas won silver in the Athens 2004 Olympics.
guarantee while he was getting tired barely drilling hard with someone that is not actively training. his compettion was turning it up to another level. all the talent but lost his focus. happens to the best of them. he isn't the first won't be the last
The purpose of this drill is to create motion in your opponent while working on set-ups to penetration. It's a drill, not live wrestling. Abas says just that at 1:22 of this video. Stan is doing exactly what the drill requires of him.
Ryan x . His workout partner is Stan Greene. You must not have seen him wrestle. He may have been one of the hardest guys to score on during his time. If you shot on Greene he would cradle you up in a heartbeat. You can start talking after you become a two-time All-American like Stan.
I was truly inspired by this video, I have known about Abas for quite sometime now as anyone involved with wrestling has. But, this was a great vid to see and hear. Best wishes finding your flow...
steve warm-up is unique,if he wants to make that part of his routine, so be it. The man is an olympian and could very well be on his second olympic team in a few months, is funny to read all of those critiquing his warm-up, How many olympics have you qualified for?
Abas has been doing this warm up for years. i saw him warming up like this his senior year when nationals were in iowa. i would have to say it works for him. he has had a good wrestling career. So saying he should just run, stretch and run is just ignorant!
Some athletes will never be able to handle the simple warm up routines that most do. That's what separates the great ones from the mediocre ones sometimes. This is one of those cases.
When I went to one of Abas' camps years ago while he was just out of college, he was wrestling live with some of the kids at the camp. I was amazed when a kid shot on a low single on Abas, and Abas literally did a front flip over the (high school) kid, landed behind him, turned around, and got the 2 point takedown. Abas has been doing this type of stuff for years.
I was waiting to see the crane stance then I would have officially called the men in white coats to take Abas away and lock him in a nice comfy padded room for about 25 years until he regains his senses. Here, how about try this warm up routine: Stretch, run, stretch, more running. Believe it or not, it works.
Sort of looking forward to Abas putting CEjudo on his you know what come Olympic trials....who can forget when Cejudo scoffed at the reporter asking him if he had incorporated any of Abas' moves/style into his wrestling at the 07 US Open.
this guy is the man. whereas most wrestlers are so stern and tryin to be tough guys all the time (see tom brands), abas is a little quirky, does things his own way, and isnt afraid to be different. i really hope to see him do well at the trials
Stephen Abas has a unique way to work out. Here he discusses how the dance fighting martial art of Capoeira helps him train, as well as his mental attitude during practice. May 6, 2008
