The impact of Sammie Henson at Oklahoma is already being shown. They just tied OSU at a dual meet at the Bedlam Duals. Sammie is going to turn things around.

I just think the program looks weird. I think if your going to bring a camera in, you need to think about the image you portray. I am a big believer in keeping the door closed when you have a lot of house cleaning to do. If the room needs attitude adjustment, do it behind closed doors.

I have seen patterson wrestle, wish I could of seen him at OK VS USA, His best matches in my opinion were against ladd rupp from Perry during high school. Its gonna be good watching them wrestle in college.

big fan of patterson from cushing, who's he wrestling at 4:25? is that bailey?
Oklahoma's a top notch program. One of my best friends Kyle Colling is going there next year. He was our state champion this year at 215 and also won junior nationals at 215 at Virginia Beach. Kyle was recruited as heavy weight. He is also one of the hardest workers I've ever had the pleasure to work out with. I know Coach Spates will make him a true Champion.
Sean- I understand what you are saying and the mentality behind trying to "break" the guys and rebuild. I'm just offering an "IMO" to your comment, not necessarily disagreeing with you.
Scientifically looking at how the body works and trying to "peak" for the big event, the early portion of training (first few months) it's important to focus on volume, not intensity. Build your VO2 MAX, or some just say "lungs" referring to your breathing. Once a "base" volume training is complete, then add the intensity. It is not possible to hold ones "peak" for more then a few weeks.
The big event for college wrestlers normally is conference or the NCAA's, those are at the end of season. For high school athletes they may be "peaking" for the first couple weeks of season (Ironman or Beast O' East) then a so-called rest until the state meet.
IMO: Preseason or the beginning of season is when you focus on conditioning, first must come volume. Bring on the most intensity the last month before the big event that trying to "peak" for.
I'm not a coach, nor do I play one on TV....
This is the time of year to try and break the guys.
Then you build them up as you go.
I am not sure what some of you think he should be doing. Have you seen the off season training of Iowa. Last year it was crazy intense. The guys have to be ready to rock.

Does Henson always at the guys like that? Or is he acting in front of the camera. I think he might be pouring it on a little to thick. It isn't like this is the week of the Iowa st. or OSU dual.

worth repeating....
It is the desire that separates everyone on the mat.
If the mind doesn't believe, the body can't achieve.

Durochershouse October 22 at 6:48am
Every wrestler in a D1 program is pretty damn good, so it isn't the technique; it is the desire that seperates every on the mat. Getting these guys to know that they can compete with Mizzou, ISU, OSU, and Neb that is trick. If the mind doesn't believe, the body can't achieve.

IndyRR----Believe me, Sammie Henson knows his technique and conveys it as well as anyone out there. This was just an intensity practice.

IndyRR October 21 at 10:35pm
I love the guy's intensity, but that will take you only so far. Compare this to the Oklahoma State vid with John Smith, where smith is correcting every little mistake the guys make, pointing it out to everyone in the room. You gotta have both--intensity and teaching. Henson certainly has the intensity part down.

OU Fan October 21 at 10:02pm
I like the intensity I see with Henson. The guys are being pushed extremely hard. I think their conditioning will be better than what we have seen in the past.

I would give anything to see everyone who talks smack on Sammy to get on the mat or even in a room with him!! Also for the Anonymous Coward guy; I agree your name fits you!! Unless your parents really hate you and that's really your name, you shouldn't comment on anything because your probably one of those "uncle Rico" guys wishing you would go back to "79" so you could win state!! On a positive note go Sooners!!!

Just Wait October 21 at 9:05pm
Once he gets to a spot where he can actually climb up to the rank of a head coach then you'll see a whole team climb the ranks of the conference and in the national tournament. He then gather solid coaches to lead the heavier guys too. He may be there now.

new coach... i guarantee same result as in years past, last in the Big 12 (5). Sammie is an individual coach not a team coach. See Paul Donahoe, Chad Mendes, Matt Azevedo, Danny Felix.
Sammie's the best there is, so much fire, he cares so much for whomever he works with, especially if you work hard. He always talks about desire, if you have the DESIRE, you'll go far and he'll do his damnedest to help you reach your goals if you're willing to go through hell with him.
That's the message he's conveying. And it's early in the season, so perhaps there's other commitments some of the team members have already. Can't judge how well a program will fair from one video workout. But if this team picks up Henson's fire, they will give teams all they have and that's a great step for ANY team to take. Can't wait to see how Ian Daube will fare. Represent CA Ian! Crack that lineup and go Andrew Howe on us as a freshman. Shock the world! Shock on 3 1 2 3 SHOCK!
John Azevedo is going to be very surpirsed to hear that he hasn't been the head coach at Cal Poly for the past 6 years.

MatMan October 21 at 1:01pm
The Room does look empty and theres little emotion being portrayed from wrestlers. The coach is more excited and more jacked up to be there than anyone. His passion is second to none. Pushing the wrestlers to succeed is awesome. He implies a very positive message as well. Talks about taking a break or standing in your stance like a champion. That should be motivation enough to bust you ass. Great video.

It Still Seems Off!!!! October 21 at 11:44am
There's a weird vibe in the room. It's like an undercurrent of tension. The guys don't look confident and there is too much looking at the camera.
Guys were breaking during the takedown matches. The numbers look low and the guys looked a little spastic during conditioning. It looked a lot more Div III than big time Div I.
I'm not putting them down, It's just what I see when I watch the video.

Red Dog October 21 at 11:35am
Doesn't Sammy Henson look more and more like a young Jack Spates? This is really spooky, every assistant coach seems to look more like their head coach as time goes on, really weird!
No program has taken more flack for their performance or lack there of in the past 2-3 seasons. These kids better get hungry and fast and restore the Sooner pride. Enough of the laughing stock.

Johann Gerlach October 21 at 3:13am
2:26 is DIRTBALLLLL!!! I'm jonesing for dirty flow takedowns. Let's get this season started already! Heson's a madman. Those kids will thank him 5 fold for putting a killer instinct in em. See how Spates just sat back and enjoyed? He loved it. Henson's a HC in just a couple years. Watch.
