lol i think that this is hilarious.... this is wrestling... its a rough sport, it takes the strongest, quickest and smartest athletes to be wrestlers... these athletes are tought how to get slammed and how to slam people. these kids will not get hurt because of they are in peak shape. just leave the wrestling to the wrestlers and don't worry about how they wrestle. the rules need to stay the same and nothin needs to be changed.
i see people do it all the time, last yr at southern plains nathan furches did the same thing. when it was his turn to lift the ref stoped it and just gave him his points.
To be honest I dont know if this is legal or not. If it is, the rules need changing immediately! I cant believe this is allowed. If this kid keeps doing this, some other kid is going to become a paraplegic! This ISNT cool and its NOT safe wrestling. His coach should be ASHAMED he hasnt stopped this. This kid needs to sit down and have a LONG talk with Ray Murphey AND Wade Shalles.

Your so wrong his snatch was a good speed and he had alot of power behind his lift, also i agree the defense wasnt there. One More thing to this is 215, to be able drop someone on their head at that weight is pretty damn sick
that kids defense is horrible. the other kids snatch was slow. just another sloppy match. you could see it any where and i have seen it a ton of times at local tournaments from pud beginer kids. if he could hit that a fargo against the real all-american wrestlers then hes got some talent. not bashing on him, just saying it wasnt that exciting.

As someone whose wrestling career was ended due to a severe neck injury, this move if legal needs to be banned at the Junior level and below. That said......
I am no big Greco guy or anything but the differnce between this kid doing the move and Spenser Mango doing the move is the level or "quality" of opponent.
When Spenser preforms this move he is doing so on world class wrestlers (senior level).
When this kid is doing this move he may be doing so against a first time Greco participant or a much less experienced wrestler who may not know how to land and such. This is where the DANGER comes into play, the fact that this is a match between HIGH SCHOOL kids where the gap in experience and skill can be HUGE, which plays a big part in injuries.
The key part which makes these moves actually pretty safe and legal is that the NY kid backs up before he executes the slam. When you back up like that it makes the opponent land on his back and not his head, leading to the fall.
And the reason Luke was so excited about these throws is that they are HUGE. Doesn't matter who it's against. If Tiger Woods hits a hole in one playing against some novice, it's still a hole in one, which makes it exciting. These are just huge throws you can't help but admire.
Very cool throws! The first two while cool did not look at all dangerous, that is the way Greco is, what else do you expect him to do? The third is impossible to gauge because of the camera angle and nobody who was on the other side of the mat and or the refs suggested it even MAY have been an illegal slam, looked legal and straight forward to me. I can see how this kid can lift that much weight he looks like a beast!
I read all of the posts before watching the video - it wasn't quite as bad as some made it out to be - but you can't really see what happened on the last slam. I don't get the guy filming and commenting on the match. Unless this was the final match of a state or regional tournament against a kid that was talented and top rated, how can you possibly get so geeked over what happened? If he does that in an Olympic qualifier against top notch competition in a few years, then I'd be just as excited about how good he is. Kid's a freakish specimen - no doubt about that. Did he wrestle against any experienced wrestlers like Stieber did in freestyle? That would be a better gauge on what to expect in the future. Difficult to tell how much he can progress from where he is at already. Happens all the time.
The kid could have whooped up using any technigue. He chose to show off at the expense of a much weaker opponent...Why go out of your way to embaress your opponent. Very lame in my book.

So everyone knows the young man who was taken out on a stretcher was back in the gym about 2 hrs later sitting with his team. young inexperienced wrestlers should compete as much as possible but not at a tourny that has teams from all up and down the east coast participating. this was a higher lever tournament and the competition that was good tough hardnosed wrestlers. It was a lot of fun and look forward to next year.

Each of the refs involved in the match were experienced officials that have reffed either this years' or past Olympic Team Trials. They are all considered top level officials and after discussing this with them none of them considered it illegal. The defensive wrestler landed on the middle part of his back as a result of the offensive wrestler backing up as he executed the drop. Despite the appearance on video the kid was not trying to injure the FL wrestler. They were in a close match and he was attempting to get the pin. No need to disparage a wrestler when you do not know the kid and when three experienced refs did not consider the move illegal.
a previous junior world team greco coach said this reverse lift finish was illegal and should have been finished to the side or backwards. he continued to say that it is illegal based on the safety for the athletes being the ultimate responsibility of coaches/refs. i guess he should go play girls basketball also. he doesn't know greco right? sprinkle some common sense into your tough guy attitude.

In my eyes it is clear the the throws by this young man was excessive and should have been deemed illegal. This is regardless of the fact that the ref didn't see it the same way. Possibly, if the official saw the video she might see it differently. It certainly wouldn't be the first time a wrestling official made a bad call.

I am troubled anytime I see an athlete attempt to injure another and that is what I saw in this clip. To condone attempted injury to an athlete in the name of promoting exciting aspects of the sport is to me, just as distasteful. Intentionally slamming your opponent, especially a lessor opponent is classless. Further, the fact that Flo places it up as a featured video is just as classless.

I saw this too, this kid is a punk. He suplexed this kid from Maryland who was obviously learning how to wrestle and had little freestlye experience. This kid could hardly defend himself and he felt the need to suplex this kid and show off. I did not see this match but watching it online he obviously has a lot of weight on this kid too and although this kid looks like he actually knows what to do it seems unecessary to repeatdly slam these kids on their head. I watched some of his other matches too and it seemed as though he was trying to break people's necks and show off.
These posts from anonymous commentators demonstrate to me another reason wrestling is not the money-making sport it should be. College programs are closing down. Our best athletes are leaving for MMA. We have one of the most exciting sports on earth, but instead of promoting that, we seem ashamed of it. Anything at all exciting that happens in the sport is quickly condemned or derided.
People watch awesome knockouts in boxing or excellent chokes in the UFC all the time. Why can't the wrestling community get excited about powerful throws that are perfectly legal?
Major wrestling matches should be filling arenas like major boxing and MMA matches do. Instead our best athletes on the world team level wrestle in empty gyms.
It's awesome displays of throws, scrambles, takedowns, pins, etc., that get people interested in wrestling. We need more promotion of the exciting aspects of the sport, not more lobbying for the boring aspects of it.
In all honesty, everyone who attended the East Coast Duals risked their safety much more by getting in a car that morning and driving on the roads than by stepping on a wrestling mat and competing. To read some anonymous posters on this board, I would think the entire sport of wrestling should be outlawed because someone could get hurt doing it. That, or moves should be so restricted that the sport becomes nothing more than a hugging and pushing match in which neither competitor is allowed to feel any sort of pain or fatigue.
The move was perfectly legal. The Florida wrestler landed in a L-shape on his shoulder blades, because the New York wrestler moved backwards and to his knees while executing it. It ended the match with a fall. And it was an exciting move.
Wrestling needs more excitement, not less.

zach is a beast!!!! there's no way he was trying to hurt anyone i've seen him wrestle and wrestled with him this off season and he is always looking to help or coach you. the potential for an inexperienced athlete to be permanently injured is there for any 5 point throw attempt in both freestyle and Greco.
I have seen countless young men getting injured from a back suplex because they panick and don't remember to tuck their chin to their chest before impact. Or from a Front Sup because they hit on the front of their head for the same reason.
I'm not saying that we shouldn't try to protect the wrestlers but there is assumed risk when you step on the mat and the best thing we coaches can do is prepare our wrestler to throw properly but even more importantly to land properly.

So, it's obvious both teams were using the move effectively and safely (no one was injured). I think the angle of the camera makes it look more dangerous than it actually was. The Florida wrestler's back hits the mat (around his shoulder-blade area) not his neck or shoulders. He's pretty much in an L-shape when he hits the mat. That's the point of wrestling: To put your opponent's back against the mat.
Zack's raw power was one of the highlights of the tournament! Everyone was talking about what an awesome performance he had in the finals.
I also had the opportunity to speak with several of the New York wrestlers -- Beckwith, Volpe, Soria, etc. -- and found them to be polite, respectful, young men. I'm sure they will achieve great things on and off the mat.
I'm already looking forward to next year's duals, when Pennsylvania and New Jersey will be attending.

He doesn't leave his feet like you make it sound he falls to his knees that hit the mat before the kid if you watch which has the effect of lessening the impact. not only did the refs not call it illegal but it wasn't even argued by Russ Cozart who I'm sure would know if there was an illegal move.

is this even legal in the ufc or wec? whether or not its called legal on the senior circuit has no relevance at this level. if this is deemed legal at the junior and below level. the people in charge are a joke. if its just not getting called illegal by these refs, they need to be demoted.
It was explained by an offical there to us and the wrestler that as long as he doesn't spread his leg in squat position leaving him only one way to go Down then the it will be stopped but if he keeps moving backwards then they wont stop the move as it will prevent him from spiking straight down.
from what was made clear to me at cal-usaw rules clinic last season, "spiking" such as this isn't allowed anymore. unless it's changed (the rules below seem pretty straightforward) i believe this has been deemed illegal for junior level and under.
Well, three experienced refs were working this bout and they called it a fall. It's worth noting that the Florida kid lands on his back (not his head or neck) in the third move.

rulebook is 100% correct. this kid needs to be warned that he could do serious damage in that position. that is 100% illegal. read the rulebook. you have to finish to the side or backwards so the head has somewhere to go besides straight down. you people saying this is legal need to get educated or hopefully out of coaching before you encourage someone to break their opponents neck.
From the USA Wrestling rulebook: "in standing holds executed from behind when the opponent is head down (reverse waist hold), the fall must be executed only to the side and never from top to bottom (header)"

On the first day of freestyle or Greco practice, any coach will teach you how to tuck your head when falling to the mat. Knowing how to fall is a key part of wrestling.

So, it's obvious both teams were using the move effectively and safely (no one was injured). I think the angle of the camera makes it look more dangerous than it actually was. The Florida wrestler's back hits the mat (around his shoulder-blade area) not his neck or shoulders. He's pretty much in an L-shape when he hits the mat. That's the point of wrestling: To put your opponent's back against the mat.
Zack's raw power was one of the highlights of the tournament! Everyone was talking about what an awesome performance he had in the finals.
I also had the opportunity to speak with several of the New York wrestlers -- Beckwith, Volpe, Soria, etc. -- and found them to be polite, respectful, young men. I'm sure they will achieve great things on and off the mat.
I'm already looking forward to next year's duals, when Pennsylvania and New Jersey will be attending.
The rules in FS and GS are highly subjective, thats why there are 3 refs working a match. My interpretation is that a pike position is legal if the inverted guy is dragged back and down, not legal if driven straight down. I coached Team NC this past weekend and our 215lb wrestler was on the recieving end of one of those bombs, it was the first time he ever gave up 5. I spoke to Zack briefly after the match, he was nothing but a gentleman and didn't seem as though he was trying to injure his opponents. Good luck next year in college!

So either all the refs I've ever seen in Greco matches call this situation incorrectly -- or your interpretation of the rulebook is wrong.

On the first day of freestyle or Greco practice, any coach will teach you how to tuck your head when falling to the mat. Knowing how to fall is a key part of wrestling.
