- See Less - Eric Guerrero expected a lot out of himself early and it showed. He became a three time California state champion in high school. Even with this success, Guerrero never compared himself to his peers but, instead, worked to get better. In college, Guerrero became a three time NCAA champion at Oklahoma State, and, again, he never compared himself to his peers. Always working for more, Eric Guerrero became an Olympian, fulfilling part of his dreams as a child.
Although Guerrero suffered narrow defeats in the Olympics, he will always be revered as an amazing competitor.
Eric Guerrero now channels his energies into coaching. He has helped lead Oklahoma State to the last four NCAA team championships.

Guerrero may be my all time favorite wrestler...extrememly sick technician. Juan, I'm pretty sure Mena couldn't have beat Ironsides so he was stuck at 126. I'm not sure how much he was cutting since he was 118 the previous season.

Juan June 25 at 11:28pm
Guerrero was such a phenomenal wrestler. Mena might have been more accomplished if he had wrestled up a weight - he always cut so much, that I think that it affected his wrestling

Announcers May 23 at 11:06am
I agree these guys are a better combo of announcers (the one guy is still there). I like the other guy though. "Ohhh tough move by Mennna!". good stuff.

A great match for young guys coming up the ranks on how NOT to sit on your lead. Mena was completely content with a 1-0 lead plus riding ride essentially giving himself a comfortable 2-0 lead. He was also content, once securing that lead, to completely shut down his offense and allow the match to slip away. This reminds me so much of prevent defense in football. If you have a 1-0 or 2-0 lead you damn well better be ATTACKING and BUILDING on that lead or you will lose, period!

1. mena was doing the same thing he did the first period, wait for guerrero to shoot/duck and get a front headlock (see it all the time), and after two periods the ref finally noticed it was stalling
2. i guess mena's short offense didnt work this time
3. overall, guerrero is a more dominant wrestler and he showed it again when he beat him in the NCAA finals
4. however cant take anything away from mena, he made it to the finals somehow, right??

How bout the McIlravy vs Abas match. I heard Iowa used it as a recruting video for a couple of years.
Final score aside in that match, Abas owned him!

Better Match May 22 at 11:36am
The best match from this dual was Hardell Moore vs. Joe Williams. I was there. Actually, my buddies and I walked in right as Mena was getting slapped in the face by Gable before this match, and we were like "Oh hell yeah."

Lincoln NE May 22 at 11:13am
That match was in Lincoln NE at the Coliseum. Not a dual in Stillwater, OK.

Tommy May 22 at 9:56am
Guys, how was that good? Mena stalled the entire match. I hate when Americans think that wrestling like that is "good". It is terrible. Guerrero at least attacked and tried to get to his shots. Mena wrestled like he always did - no game plan, no attack, trying to hold on for a win.

Twilly May 22 at 8:22am
good stuff. There are dozens of Iowa vs. Okie st matches from the 90's that could be on here.
When Guerrero hit Mena with stalling after the match that reminded me of when Ben Askren hit the Iowa kid, Gable and the Iowa crowd for stalling a couple years ago!

Eric was intense the whole match. Nice. Mena stopped after he was taken down. there was enough time for a 1 pt escape at lease. WOW.
#31
Jimbo May 21 at 5:05pm
Mena may have tried to ride out the 3rd, but Guerrero sure knew how to find the out of bounds line any time Mena went on the offense in the 1st.

that was a sickkk last period omg

Whay is anyone argueing anything? It's obvious that Mena was trying to hold on to a 2 pt lead in the 3rd instead of going aggressive. Because of that, he lost. I mean Guerrero went after him, and won. Enough said.

Jbeshada May 21 at 2:26pm
awesome match, 1st i dont believe mena was really stalling, he was doing what he needed to do to win the match. He prob knew he wasnt gonna beat guererro on their feet. 2nd Guererro is one of my fav wrestlers of all time and really earned this match, awesome. 3rd is it just me or does the commentary back then seem 100x better than it is today?

Mena rides like a beast, but he real seemed to have nothing at all on his feet, Guererro pushed the action the entire time

mena rode hard..great match..guerrero was relentless..i like it
Sean Dunn said: I thought Mena was backing up for much of the match(and almost the whole 3rd period). I liked Guerrero in this match. He seemed to be working forward the whole time trying to score.
yeah, definately. Iowa didnt really capitalize stopping Guerrero. he had tons of oppurtunities for a re-shoot and blew it. oh well.

PAProud May 21 at 1:41pm
You would have to be a real Hawk Homer to say Guerrero was stalling in the 2nd, since Mena didnt do anything on top except stall. Sometimes I wonder if Hawk fans are just really really sarcastic with the comments they make, because they pull off sounding 100% stupid 99% of the time.

Your videos don't load very well making it almost impossible to watch. I finally just shut it off.

Guerrero should have been hit for stalling on bottom!!!!!!!
He seemed to working up pretty much the whole time.
Plus he needed that point. So I am not really seeing it.
I agree Brands, McIlravy , Ryan
