Doug was our assistant coach at Mich State when I was there 64 to 68. I went to Granby High and wrestled with many NCAA champions at both schools'
There are wrestlers and then there are wrestlers and then there is Doug Blubaugh. That says it all.

I had the pleasure of attending one of his camps. He used to (and may still) have a camp with dorm cabins and a lake and a big ol' barn wrestling facility and "Doug Nuts" as he liked to be called was as interesting a person as they come. A week at his camp taught you a lot about technique but even more about what is important in life and how to get the most out of yourself and life itself. One of the most fun experiences of my life, getting to hear him tell stories and tales and advice. He also has a form of narcalepsy that if he shows strong emotion he would flat out pass out. If he was performing a move (and he always went full tilt) and the subject on the painfull side of the move sqeaked out a loud enough ouch, he would sometimes just pass out mid move. He would make light of the condition in many funny stories and even at his age he was still an ultra-aggressive powerhouse of a coach. No eminities no frills just work. I remember one cold shower for the whole camp. But I wouldn't trade my time at his camp for anything in the world. A great man, with a truly smashed up vehicle (narcalepsy driving). The first and only Olympic gold medal I've ever held. He was also 1960 World Wrestler of the Year. More Interviews with this Legend of the sort are needed, lest we forget those that weren't of the age of the Internet.

I had the opportunity to wrestle at Ohio State when Coach B when he was there assisting Hellickson. He was, without a doubt, the most knowledgeable coach I have ever been around.

He would come and work out with us in high school in Ponca City. He was great to have in the room. We almost took it for granted but he really helped us out to become the team we ended up being. He was in the corner coaching and told some great stories on training. Unvelievable man!

Loved hearing him describe his olympic match and then I viewed it on your site. Just as he said....He didn't let go a bit.

Martin, how about getting some more interviews from this legend without all the music in the background? It would be a real hit. Also, how about getting some videos of him doing some coaching? Bet his style is inimitable!!!!

Mr. Blubaugh is one of the most interesting men alive and what a great man. I have got to spend a lot of time around Mr. Blubaugh and he is one of the most knowlegeable guys I have ever met around the sport of wrestling. Just by him talking about not worrying about who he is wrestling or what the guys does, is so great to hear. I cannot stand kids being so worried about who they are wrestling or what the kid does. Parents especially drive me nuts, when they are telling their kid about someone they are wrestling. Let them wrestle and see what happens.

Good stuff Flo

The defeat of a Legendary Habibi

Doug Blubaugh didnt want to know who he was wrestling so he isolated himself the whole day he was wrestling in the Olympics. It took him his whole life to get to where he had gotten and nothing in the next 30 minutes was going to change him. HE didnt even know who Habibi was when he stepped out on the mat.
