Y' all waste so much time badmouthing various wrestlers. You forget some important things about wrestling. First, an injury definitely puts one at a disadvantage, but the willingness of an injured wrestler to take on another top-rated wrestler that he's never faced before, shows the metal he is made of. Both of these wrestlers came out and wrestled to win. Both made some really gutsy moves, and neither was afraid to try something, when they were in a tight spot.

These guys were not wrestling for a state or national championship, just pride, and they wrestled tough. They may wrestle one another in college and trade victories many times, because wrestling is so much about learning your weaknesses as revealed through others' victories against you, and your ability to adjust, find, and exploit the weaknesses in others. It is a sport of domination, with the emphasis on SPORT! Both of these wrestlers' records and demonstration here on the mat, show them to be true sportsmen, and able competitors.
When you look at the NCAA champions for this year, you will see a whole lot of top ranked wrestlers, even returning national champions, who easily won their conferences and then lost in the preliminary rounds to someone, who barely made it into the tournament! The point is this -- that wrestlers can improve on a day by day or even hour by hour basis, if they keep giving it all and have some real talent. There are so many tournaments, and so much competition today, so many videos to learn great moves from great wrestlers, that everyone in this sport, who really loves to compete, is growing by leaps and bounds.
But wrestlers can have a bad day, a bad tournament, or even a bad year, and still have a great career. The Steibers and Chris Phillips are truly great high school wrestlers right now, their fame sullied a little, perhaps, by the fact that the state of Ohio does not have one individual tournament, with one champion at each weight class [putting studs like this up against Division III wrestlers at a state championship is absolutely pitiful to watch], but, undaunted, they have faithfully made the trip Fargo and laid it on the line for national championships, which, to the surprise of many, they have won. Yet, these same wrestlers experienced upset losses at the Ironman last year, because ,when it comes to most of the really good wrestlers, almost anyone can win on any given day. Health, conditioning, ability to adjust to another's style, and determination can all make the difference in a match, and the big tournaments are won only one match at a time.
In the end, the greatest NCAA and Olympic wrestlers don't always end up coming from the most populous states like California, New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio, or the so-called greatest wrestling states, like Ohio, Michigan, Oklahoma, and California but often times, like Randy Lewis and Cael Sanderson, they come crawling out of the waste lands of Utah, Iowa, Illinois, Nebraska, Minnesota, and the Dakotas, because successful high school and college wrestlers have settled all over this country, and have been developing wonderful programs to share the passion, wherever they go. When I was in high school, in the 1960s, United States Olympic wrestling was far behind our Asian and European competitors, but that changed greatly over the past 50 years, because more and more Americans are sharing in this sport. Don't nock these guys. Celebrate these guys, because they are our future!
Good luck in college to both Punnet and Goree!

Paddock seemed to gas at the end of that match and Goree took it too him and just kept wrestling. Great riding at the end of the match to get the win.

out of 8 matches...

Paddock has beaten Eckstrom 6 times..
with decisive 5-0 matches.. 8-2 matches and etc...
I believe both of Eckstrom's win (counting Paddock's torn labium) were 1-2 point matches...
Here is the evidence, up to you, the logical person to decide who is better.

If exstrom is such a better wrestler than ian why has he only beaten him twice in his career? The first time ian bumped up 2 weight classes to wrestle him and lost by 1 point i believe and the second time in the state finals ian wrestled him with a torn labrum in his shoulder and lost again by 1.

paddock was injured at nys finals. he finished the match with one arm.

not sure what the injury is but he performed well. you could see in this match
that he only rode on rt side to protect that arm. also could not finish td because he has --0- strength in left arm.

Ian is stuff reguardless but if your trying to bring up his supers to states match, all you guys are completely wrong, how about maybe bucky or exstrom were off? you guys never thought about that, exstrom is twice the athlete of Ian and at the state tournament had better strategy and just stayed out of the underhooks and just did elbow passes all day.. he also should have had another takedown he did not get.. unless your there you have no idea..exstrom is just better... Ian willl be lucky to place top 8 at seniors, true story

Paddock is def the better wrestler IMO.. Paddock also wrestlerd 135 the entire season.. the cut may ahve mad somthing to do with the gasing.. But he is obv hurt.. a wrestler of his caliber doesnt normally give up takedowns like that. Something visibly wrong

I know they are excuses, but just because they are excuses does not mean they are not VALID ones.

Look at the match between Paddock and Ekstrom at Supers just 2 weeks before State, Paddock beat him 5-0, TD and Nearfall Pts. Paddock also Techfall'd Bucky Hendrickson in Supers.
However, at States it was obvious he hurt his shoulder when the same wrestler he Tech fall'd (bucky hendrickson) had a very close 9-8 match with him, and it became even more evident in the finals with Ekstrom when it was a close 4-3 match with Paddock having to resort to a more defensive style the whole match. And this defensive style is evident in this match also.
And if you bring up last years competitions as your base points, at the State finals Paddock major'd Dake (the Junior Nats Champ). Even cradling him to his back for 3 pts. .
(Even though at Junior Nats he did gas.)

The win before Paddocks loss at the State finals (where he tweaked his shoulder) was a decisive 5-0 match in Paddocks favor.

I think Paddock's conditioning was largely in part due to his injury, or maybe more so because its the techincally the "offseason"
check out last years NHSCA Junior Nats.....the kid ran out of gas. Offseason....the season just end like 2 weeks ago. He knew he was going to wrestle in this thing. Excuses.....excuses.

the Ok kid is physical....Paddock has not seen alot of beasts like this in NY's Division 2. Goree almost knocked himself out with the with the first takedown. Paddock was state champ in 8th grade then went 3-1-1-2. Losing to Ekstrom Oklahoma Signee senior year and both were going for 4th state crown. I could be wrong I think Paddock is going to Edinboro where is brother is now. Killa comback by Goree...Paddock is known to gas out like in last years NHSCA Junior Nats where sputtered to 4th. Goree 1st TD was great ! Paddock has to get that. If paddock has a bad shoulder why is he wrestling in this ????? Paddock looked like dog dooo at the end.
