I humbly request more greco matches at some point in the future.. I don't really know greco history enough to think of specific matches; the only one I can think of off-hand is Samargashuev vs Cuban at the 2002 worlds, where the Russian hit a 5 pt throw right at the end to win... Karelin matches would be cool too.

Because back at the time there was par terre, if it was given out like a caution where the more aggressive wrestler could choose to put the other wrestler down or keep them up. He had more time as kinda like a punishment where as when hadi took saitiev down he had about as much time as you normally would, i hope that made it clear

Why did the ref give Buvaisar 20 min for a turn and the other dude 2.3 seconds?

Saitiev has lost to Murtazaliev a couple of times, to another Russian at the nationals a few years back, to Ganev, to Slay, and to at least one guy while wrestling up at 84... BTW thewrestlingtalk.com has a ton of Saitiev matches on it for those looking for more.

Saitiev Saturdays!!! mad respect for our brother in wrestling out there in Russia, 2 international losses and 2 domestic losses since 1995. Yikes.

Yeah no doubt that saitiev would have made Askren look like a little boy amongst men but I like askrens style and colossal ego,makes watching him wrestle a little more interesting...both are 2 of my top favorites to watch.

It would have been amusing to watch Saitiev dismantle Askren and his colossal ego.

Very nice match. Interestingly Satiev hits a variation of the west point ride at around 3:00 mark. Not legal anymore in collegiate style but an interesting way to score a turn...

some of those turns were as close to a chess match as your gonna see on a wrestling mat, and thats saying something.

Good example of a great wrestler adapting to accomodate an injury. Saitiev's gut wrench/west point combo looks really painful.

If I remember correctly the final vs Gaidrov went much the same way, Saitiev trying to tie up and Gaidrov having none of it, but neither guy was able to score so it went to ref's decision.
on a related note, anyone know how Saitiev/Gaidrov went in 2004? I know there was controversy and a fight but I don't know details of the match itself.

Yea i was gona say that Saitiev's style in this match was much different than other matches of him. Great action!

Semi Final of the 2003 World Championships between Buvaisar Satieiv and Hadi Habibi. It was a hard fought match with some decent action on the feet and some nice pare terre turns by Saitiev.

Just for some background, Saitiev had broken a bone in his face in an earlier match against AUS. It was pretty nasty. Could be a reason why he looked a bit cautious and tried to tie up Habibi in order to limit any more injury to that area. That said, the strategy, if it was in fact his strategy, worked and he was able to draw some cautions on Habibi and put him down and work some turns.

Joe Williams had lost to Habibi 2nd round of the tounament when he got hit with a throw from the clinch.

Overall it was a good match and you gotta love the Iranian fans. They cheer for the Americans too.
