Blew It!!   September 24 at 4:01pm
this is seriously the worst call I have ever seen on the mat. there are many reasons this call was wrong, but j wasn't even on his back long enough for the fall criteria! not to menton the dumbass ref wasn't even in position to make the accurate call...sorry jaggers, but this ref didn't like you...it's ok because you got the last laugh!

I was at the match I thought that the call was a little questionable. He was flat on his back for an instant, but that move is used frequently in college and rarely does a ref call a fast pin like that. I want to thank J for the exciting flurries during his career at OSU. I see most of the OSU home matches from the front row. I also want to say that I was impressed with his latest interview where he said that he will repeat as national champ. and I am one of the fans that he was referring to that were in the arena against Illinios that believe in him. Go J!!!!!!!

Anonymous "Coward"... please don't say you (wrote) something that you did not. We all see that you did not like the call which is your belief. But this was my comment and in my o-PIN-ion it look as though J was pinned. Let it go, the match is over. And Jaggers record is now 6 wins and 7 losses . THE END...

First there was no pin, very very bad reffing, was he flat at one point? yes, but for 1 second? no, was reaction time given? no, especially with no control, was the ref way out of position? yes, this ref doesn't know the difference between a 90 and 45 degree angle is either, waiving back point after breaking a 90 is terrible reffing!!! and being out position all the time, out of bounds calls sucked too, for this big of an event you would think they could of found a more qualified referee and where was the assistant ref ??
reply
#105
Anonymous Coward   January 7 at 9:25pm
he might have been stuck a couple seconds before the pin was called but from this angle it's impossible to tell. probably was a bad call. but maybe people should be a little more hesitant to go straight to their back? any time you roll over your back like that you run the risk of getting pinned, and every once in a while you're gonna get caught.
reply
#104
Anonymous Coward   January 7 at 7:11pm
I think the ref saw that he was flat, because he was flat , and was out of position to call the pin in a timely manner. It happens people, even the good ones, get caught from time to time. Lashaway is not someone to be taken lightly, not that Jaggers took him lightly, just saying that Drew brings it when he steps on the mat.

Definitely was a quick call based on ref's position. It would have been nice to see more action from these two in this match. It seemed more like Jaggers was waiting for Lashaway to bring the action, could have been his downfall in this one. It seems as though he knows how to finish a season which is more imporatant.

reply

Anonymous Coward   January 6 at 8:32pm
That was one of the worst calls I have ever seen. The ref was not in position to make that call and Jaggers certainly wasn't stuck when the whistle blow. You have to use discretion in a scramble, from neutral and allow the guys to work. There is no way you can say Lashaway had control at any point especially since Jaggers was out the backdoor when the whistle blew...

very lucky last year at the NCAA - squeaked by using injury time in almost every match in order to throw up or catch his breath. Got every break he needed. There were about seven guys who could have won it last year. That weight was a mess and he won that weekend. You usually dont get those breaks twice in a row. According to the commentator he was 6-6 going into the match so he should be 6-7 now.

Anonymous Coward   January 6 at 3:18pm
in my opinion...god call. at 2:46, when the takedown is awarded, Lashaway has Jaggers's leg and he has an arm in a claw-like hold...as the ref is circleing and dropping to his knees at about 2:47 he can see Jaggers's shoulders clearly while we can not because of the ref's body...the slap of the mat only signifies the end of the match NOT when the fall is earned.

The official made his one count from his feet. He extends his arm to signify the count and by the time he gets down to the mat to make the call Jaggers is well off his back.

The far shoulder is obviously down and he is looking right at the near shoulder as he made his count.
Excellent call.

NCAA AA- Yeah they did not show any type of sportsmanship, that stinks, he threw his headgear. Watch his NCAA finals match and watch how the Cal Poly kid reacts after he loses to J, maybe J should take some notes.
reply

Anonymous Coward   January 6 at 6:10am
Classless - I watch this kid and his father literally chase the official out of the arena at the end of the dual screaming at him. As stated previously, when Metcalf was pinned you did not seee him or his father confront the official. Who cares if he was pinned? His record is 6-6 its not like he was undefeated. Maybe this will light a fire under J and get him ready for the post season.
reply

Anonymous Coward   January 6 at 12:10am
There were a couple bad calls. 1st- that was not a TD yet. No control was ever gained and Jaggers actually had the momentum. 2nd- The ref was in terrible position to able to make that call if indeed it was a pin 3rd- In the rare justification that you can say he was stopped on his back for the one one-thousand count, he was incredibly inconsistent at other times.

That was ridiculous. Even at 2:47 his scapula wasn't down. There is no way he was pinned. You can say what you want its done with. But that was not a pin.
reply

Luke Broadwater   January 5 at 10:22pm
From the NCAA rule book:

"Any part of both shoulders or part of both scapulae of either wrestler held in contact with the mat for one
second constitutes a fall. The one-second count (one-thousand-one) shall be a silent count by the referee and shall start only after the referee is in position to observe that a fall is imminent, after which the shoulders or scapulae area must be held in continuous contact with the mat for one second before a fall is awarded."
I agree that Jaggers' shoulder blades were flat for a 1-second count -- almost exactly 1 second, if you watch in slow motion -- but not that the ref was in position to see it BEFORE he started his count, as the rule book says.
The NCAA rules are very clear that the ref is not supposed to start his 1-second count until after he is in position.

Anonymous Coward   January 5 at 10:18pm
In my humble opnion, this call in real time, appears a bit premature, however, after watching the video I can see, from my limited view, where Jaggers shoulders were pressed to the mat for a very quick two seconds. Just play/pause the video very quickly from 2:46 through 2:47 and I think you will see what I saw. I don't like the call because I am positive that what the ref saw is not nearly as precise as what I saw after replaying the call approximately 20 times and this leads me to believe that the ref is a bit biased.
reply
#57
Anonymous Coward   January 5 at 9:42pm
Jaggers shouldn't have tried that funky counter. He deserved to get pinned. He was pinned the ref ran around too much looking for it. He should stayed on the other side or anticipated the action better towards him.
reply
#56
Anonymous Coward   January 5 at 8:47pm
I have never seen someone in Lashaway's position be given a pin call. He is no way in control of Jaggers. Even in a defensive pin type situation, the defensive wrestler is usually doing something to keep the other party from rolling through. Here, Lashaway seems to be focusing his energy on not falling on his face at the time of the pin.
reply

Anonymous Coward   January 5 at 8:30pm
watch 2:46-2:47 -- 2 seconds while he was shoulders only...easy to see while standing, just that it took him too long to actually slap the mat but he was flat as a pancake

2pts awarded @ 2:45, Jaggers definitely meets pin criteria,
at 2:47(freeze it if you need to), this is clearly what the ref saw.
No need to give Jaggers reaction time(he should have bailed when the 2 was given).

BTW, the ref was NOT out of position at 2:47. He was in good position at 2:46, you can see his hand raised at 2:47 and Jaggers pinned at the same time. Did it happen too fast for you?

That's ur opinion. It wasn't like he was controling him. maybe it should be the other way around where you have to be on ur back for 2 seconds. that way a Fall is no doubt a Fall and u have control of ur opponent. Bad call, 2 point take down 3 points near fall. NEAR FALL. NOT A FALL. The ref wasn't even at the angle to call it. he was standing up. He should have went to the mat and made a better judgment.

It looked to me like both of Jaggers' shoulder blades were touching the mat and then came off before the ref made the call. IMHO, the count was a bit quick and the call a bit late.

This is suppose to be NCAA wrestling, I am not even sure if they would call that in Freestyle. That was by far one of the worst calls of the year.

In my opinion, that was a bad call.

Big Ten Assigns officials, 25 ushers/event staff employees, one official, not OSU's fault, Big Ten took this out of their hands, quick fall call. Hopefully Jaggers can recover, he has had rough stretches before and may recover. Good hustle by Larry Lashaway and credit to him knowing the roll was coming. Hopefully this rivalry will continue at the NCAA tourny.

I was seated first row and did not agree with the call, now I look at the video 10 or more times and see he was not held for the 2 second count. Official was out of position and a call on the fly for something the he missed completley and tryed to make up for. Horrible at this level

The Ref assumed the fall. Should not have called it so quickly.

He is pinned. But the problem is that he's not pinned by the time the ref gets in position to make the call.

By the time he gets in position, Jaggers isn't close to getting pinned long enough. Gotta let it go. 2-takedown, and start the back-pt count.

lol. i almost want to become a ref just to do that move. tom ryan made a real good point. jaggers went straight to the roll to defend the single. that should have been his last option. he really didnt move his hips or work lashaways wrists first. anyone else see a whole lot of donahoe in lashaway, at least on the feet?

I would say home town call, but ....anyways that move by the ref was sweet, it was a head first slide to a pin slap. That combo will be imitated time and time again, but never again duplicated.

its impossible to say whether it was a fall really bc we dont have the camera angle. he awards the 2 and then yeah, it looks like his shoulders touched but only for a second really, like a freestyle pin. and anyway, this ref should be banned from refereeing. he calls the pin wayyyy after being able to actually see it. unreal call.
