That kid got super lucky. Ed would tear him up if they ever wrestled again and all of america knows that even Matt Mullet. Props to him though cause not many people can say they ever beat Ed Ruth.

What makes this such a horrible call????? Looks like he got caught and pinned. Happens, but really too bad. Still, nonetheless it was a fall.

You peeps complaining about the fall call shoul look in the rule book. The shoulders are only part of the pinning area. The bottom of your scapula (thats for you ballsack) Is the lowest pinning surface which is about midway down your back. It is a fall...

During the first part of this match, Blair Academy’s nationally ranked 171 pounder and Penn State recruit, Ed Jones, steamrolls his hapless opponent, Matt Mullet, from Mount St. Joseph, using the signature moves that Ed has used to overwhelm the best wrestler’s at the nation at his weight class. Ed Ruth calmly and surely dismembers his opponents, usually starting by painfully handcuffing their wrists with his powerful pincher grip and often finishing wrapping their neck and leg up in his vertebrate bruising cradle. Ed, like the great North Carolina State national champion, Darrion Caldwell, has tremendous power, in part due to their long limbs that act as effective levers in the single legs, and in Ed’s case cradles and Darrion’s case a headlock and spladle, that they use to become pinning machines. While Ed waits with a coach by the side of the mat, during an interruption to replace a defective head gear, Ed and the coach smile and look relaxed, but more alive than his near narcoleptic demeanour he usually exhibits during his matches. Ed re-enters the mat and the match with top control and locks up his powerful cradle threatening to pin Matt by the edge of the mat, which Matt rolls out. Ed dominates Matt from on top leaving Matt almost no defence, and Matt receives a stall warning. Ed tilts Matt for more near fall points. Ed appears to execute his moves with little resistance from Matt.
The wrestlers start the next period in neutral, by Matt’s choice, and Ed attempts a standing cradle, and when that doesn’t work he switches to an inside single precipitating a scramble that includes a double leg attempt by Ed. So far the match has been all Ed, Ed scores a takedown, a near fall, another a near fall, and another, while Matt gamely struggles to hold on and hang in the match. Then, Matt converts, from the scramble, a spladle, and pins Ed. Matt has turned his mauling into an inspirational comeback.
I imagine I hear Eye of the Tiger playing and see Rocky Balboa swaying in the ring, giddy from the mauling he has taken, still pull off the big upset. This ending has cinematic appeal, the underdog comes out ahead, better than Vision Quest.

Back to real life, the classy Ed Ruth shakes his opponents hand and calmly walks off the mat, then comes back to place third in this tough tournament. Matt, who does not win the tournament, does an interview and says he has trained this move. Training meets opportunity and when infused with mental toughness becomes an inspirational and much viewed win.

Dude giving that kid props for that is about like putting a special olympian on sportscenter. That is the stupidest barnyard, ken chertow camp move that has no place outside the college station holliday inn lobby. You're probably going to say, "well it worked" but that was an anomoly. that kid had the same chances of winning the lottery. makes me mad that he ruined ed ruth's day.

Actual Rule   February 17 at 4:04pm
The rule states that a pin is when one's shoulder blades are touching the mat at the same time. Your shoulder blade starts at your upper back, and ends near the middle/lower part of the back. Therefore, this was a rightly called pin. WHAT A MOVE!!

this is blaiten proof that some refs really just love to see a champion fall. ruths left shoulder was not even close to the mat. in fact, it was on top of mullets body. poor refereeing, but it just goes to show you that it doesnt always pay to be #1 in the country.

look, he was pinned. even ed knew it. You could tell by his reaction. The win by matt really messed up the rest of the bracket. Ed won 7 straight to come back and take 3rd and if there was a true 2nd, he probably would have made it 8 straight. Great tournament to both wrestlers

Most refs don't know anatomy, too bad, cause metcalf would be
undefeated for his college career, and Ruth would have won the beast. Perhaps doctors and trainers can review this with refs so they
can differentiate from the scapula, and the rest of the back.

When you are getting beat pretty good, you might as well go for the pin. Mullet did well to not get pinned by the cradle earlier in the match. What a good lesson for life-----keep fighting, never give up.

Somebody in the crowd was yelling, "you can't beat him, but you can pin him"...

Mullett has hit this move in a big victory once before aginst Alex Pagnotta from mcdoungh.....its one of mulletts personal best. He won fare and square

"his shoulder was on his chest"

ur shoulder doesn't have to be flat to the mat, it's any part of ur shoulder blades, that's why ur curl the head up off the mat on most falls. he was stuck. and yea, not sure but he didn't look like he was at the top of his game for that match.
